India: Beer sales rise sharply in April-June quarter
|
Beer sales in India rose sharply in the April-June quarter as state tax changes made spirits more expensive in several major markets and pushed some drinkers toward lower-priced or more stable beer options, Vinetur reported on September 7.
National beer volumes increased more than 17% from a year earlier in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, according to industry officials citing excise data and statements from the Brewers Association of India. That marked a clear acceleration from roughly 4% growth recorded for the full fiscal year 2025. The jump amounts to an improvement of about 13 percentage points, although the periods are not directly comparable because the latest figure covers the peak summer quarter for beer rather than a full year.
The shift was most visible in Maharashtra and Karnataka, two of India’s largest alcohol markets. Vinod Giri, director general of the Brewers Association of India, said beer sales in the quarter rose 42% in Maharashtra and 35% in Karnataka from a year earlier. He said the increase was driven mainly by favorable state excise policies that encouraged consumption of milder alcoholic beverages.

Canada & USA: Sapporo to move some beer production from Canada to the US
|
Japanese brewer Sapporo says it will move some beer production from Canada to the US after new tariffs on Canadian beer took effect on September 8, BBC reported.
The move follows the introduction of a 50% tariff on beer imported from Canada. For companies shipping beer across the border, that means significantly higher costs.
Chief strategy officer Rieko Shofu described tariffs as "something out of our control," telling Bloomberg that the beer giant would "move ahead with local production."
Sapporo did not immediately respond to the BBC's request for comment. The company plans to shift production of its non-alcoholic beer, currently made in Canada for US customers, to the US by the first half of 2027.
The US is one of Sapporo's most important overseas markets, and any shift south of the border will directly affect operations at its Canadian subsidiary, Sleeman Breweries.
To mitigate rising costs, the Japanese brewer is considering adding production capacity on the US West Coast. Options include building or buying a brewery, or partnering with a third-party manufacturer.
Sapporo has been building its presence in the US for years and says its flagship Sapporo brand is the country's best-selling Asian beer brand.

United Breweries expects premium beer to become a much larger part of its business over the next four years, with the segment likely to account for 18–20% of sales by 2029-30 (FY30), up from around 11% currently. MD & CEO Vivek Gupta said premium beer is growing 20–25% annually and is also becoming an important driver of the company’s profitability, CNBC TV18 reported on September 4.
Premium volumes grew 34% in 2024 and 24% last year, while this year’s performance is ahead of plan. Brands such as Heineken Silver and Ultra are driving the premiumisation push, with Heineken Silver being rolled out across more states.
Gupta said the company is targeting double-digit revenue growth, but wants to achieve it while steadily improving margins. “The quality of that growth is also important because it's a state-by-state business.” He said growth will come from a combination of premiumisation, better price mix and higher volumes.
Margin improvement will also come from better use of United Breweries’ own production facilities, a favourable mix of states and productivity initiatives. The company is investing in technology and aims to produce more cases from existing breweries without significant additional capital expenditure.

Australia: Both malting and feed barley exports decline in July

Australia exported 771,683 tonnes of barley and 310,968t of sorghum in July, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data.
Feed barley exports totaled 583,191t, down 5 percent from the 614,668t shipped in June, with China on 505,767t accounting for 87pc of the total.
On 65,149t, Japan was the second-biggest market for feed barley, followed by Vietnam on 5178t.
Malting barley exports on 188,492t were down 22pc from 242,065t shipped in June.
China on 101,150t accounted for 54pc of malting barley exports, with Vietnam on 33,866t the second-biggest malting market, followed by Japan 20,858t.
Bucking the trend, sorghum exports rose 36pc to reflect volume available out of Central Queensland, where harvest is considerably later than in the other major producing areas of southern Queensland and northern New South Wales.
China on 308,628t accounted for nearly all of the sorghum shipped in July, with Taiwan on 1713t and The Philippines on 525t the only other destinations to take more than 100t.

India: Pernod Ricard picks four banks for potential £740m India IPO
|
Pernod Ricard has taken another step towards a possible IPO of its Indian business, reportedly appointing four banks to advise on a listing that could take place in 2027, The Drinks Business reported on September 8.
According to Moneycontrol, Pernod Ricard India has appointed Kotak Mahindra Capital, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and BofA Securities to work on the proposed flotation.
Further banks could subsequently join the syndicate, according to people familiar with the discussions cited by the publication.
The IPO could seek to raise more than INR94.5 billion (US$1 billion) next year, although its size and structure have not been finalised and could change depending on Pernod Ricard’s strategy and market conditions.
Pernod Ricard stressed that it has not decided to proceed.
“As stated by our Global CEO, Alexandre Ricard, during the publication of the group’s FY26 annual results, the discussion around India IPO is still ongoing and exploratory, with no certainty as to its implementation,” Pernod Ricard India told Moneycontrol.
