India: Carlsberg preparing to file draft papers for India IPO
|
Carlsberg A/S is preparing to file draft papers for an initial public offering of its India unit as early as this month, according to people familiar with the matter, The Economic Times reported on June 8.
The potential listing could raise as much as $700 million (around Rs 6,650 crore), the people said, asking not to be identified because the information is private. Carlsberg is working with Kotak Mahindra Capital Co. and the local units of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Citigroup Inc. on the proposed share sale, the people said.
The IPO is expected to consist of a secondary share sale by the Danish brewer and could take place later this year, according to the people. Deliberations are ongoing and details including the size, structure and timing of the transaction could still change.
Representatives for Carlsberg declined to comment beyond reiterating that the company is exploring options to increase shareholder value, including an IPO, but no final decision has been made. The banks didn’t respond to requests for comment.

New Zealand: New Zealand to raise alcohol excise duty rates on July 1
|
New Zealand will raise excise duty rates on alcoholic beverages on July 1, increasing taxes across beer, wine, spirits and other alcohol categories as part of its annual inflation-linked adjustment, according to a notice published Friday by New Zealand Customs, Vinetur reported on June 5.
The change applies to alcohol products removed from a licensed manufacturing area or imported after midnight on June 30. Customs said the yearly revision is based on movements in the Consumers Price Index All Groups, excluding the credit services subgroup, over the 12 months ended March 31.
For lower-strength beverages containing more than 1.15% alcohol by volume but not more than 2.5%, the excise rate will rise from 56.747 cents per liter of beverage to 58.492 cents. For products containing more than 2.5% ABV but not more than 6%, a category that covers much of the beer market, the rate will increase from NZ$37.836 per liter of alcohol to NZ$38.999 per liter of alcohol.
Other categories will also move higher. Beverages containing more than 6% ABV but not more than 9% will rise from NZ$3.0268 per liter of beverage to NZ$3.1199. Products containing more than 9% ABV but not more than 14% will increase from NZ$3.7836 per liter

South Africa: South African Breweries warns 20% high-alcohol beer tax could fuel South Afica’s illicit trade crisis
|
South African Breweries (SAB) has warned that the beer industry risks being overrun by the black market if the National Treasury follows through on its plan to hike taxes by 20% for beer with higher alcohol content in a bid to channel consumers to low-alcohol beers, Sowetan reported on June 8.
The proposal will see beer with 4%-6% alcohol by volume, a measure of a drink’s total volume of pure alcohol or ethanol, attract higher taxes.
The proposal by the National Treasury will see prices of popular SAB brands including Castle Lager, Black Label, Hansa Pilsner and Castle Milk Stout shoot through the roof.
The company, which belongs in the stable of JSE-listed AB InBev, is pushing back on the proposal, warning it will have unintended consequences and drive consumers to cheaper illicit beers that it says are already a big factor in the market.
Business Day understands the proposal might wipe more than R2bn in sales, according to SAB projections.
In its submission to the National Treasury, SAB, which fetched a R1.4-trillion price tag when it was acquired by AB InBev a decade ago, said illicit beers are already 37% cheaper. The proposal will widen the price gap further, force consumers to the illicit

USA: Tilray Brands reportedly selling Atwater Brewery less than two years after acquisition
|
Tilray Brands is reportedly selling Atwater Brewery, less than two years after purchasing the US business from Molson Coors Beverage Co., Global Drinks Intel reported on June 8.
In a LinkedIn post today (8 June), Atwater founder Mark Rieth shared an article from local news outlet Detroit Business announcing his purchase of the Detroit, Michigan brewer as a “homecoming” deal. Replying to follow-up comments on the post, the entrepreneur said: “thx [sic]. Future is bright for craft beer.”
Global Drinks Intel has contacted Tilray and Atwater for confirmation of the deal.
Rieth, who is the owner of Detroit Liquid Ventures, Hard Nose Spirits, Lansing Brewing Co and Velvet Peanut Butter, and the CEO of non-alcoholic brand FÜL Beverage, founded Atwater in 2005. He ran the business for 17 years before selling to Molson Coors in 2020. Tilray then purchased the brewer in September 2024, along with craft-beer brands Hop Valley, Revolver and Terrapin, for a combined US$23.08m.
Atwater produces a range of permanent and seasonal beers, and runs three taprooms in Michigan.
In March, Tilray agreed a cut-price deal to acquire Scottish brewer BrewDog in a pre-pack administration transaction for just GBP33m (US$44.5m). A month prior, the Canadian company penned a deal giving it the

India: United Spirits to close another of its manufacturing units in Hyderabad
|
United Spirits, the Indian business of Diageo, is set to close another of its manufacturing units in the southern city of Hyderabad, MSN reported on June 5.
The plant in Venkateshwara Nagara, Malkajgiri is expected to shut by the end of August.
In a stock exchange filing, United Spirits, which makes brands such as Black Dog whisky, said the closure is part of its “multi-year supply-chain agility programme” approved by the board in January 2023.
“As part of the said agility programme and subject to receipt of necessary statutory approvals, the company intends to transfer the excise licence issued by Telangana Prohibition & Excise Department to another party, following which our factory operations at the unit will cease,” the company added.
According to the filing, the facility generated Rs5.99bn ($63.1m), equivalent to 2% of the company's revenue from operations in the financial year 2025-26 ended 31 March.
Just Drinks has contacted Diageo for further comment on the closure and details on which products were made there.
The move follows last year’s closure of United Spirits' Hyderabad manufacturing unit in Nacharam as part of the same supply chain agility programme. Set up in 1970, that facility produced United Spirits’ portfolio of Indian-made foreign liquors.
At the time, a
