UK: Sales of lower strength beers rise sharply since changes to alcohol duty regime
|
Sales of lower strength beers have risen sharply since changes to the alcohol duty regime came into force, with 200m units of alcohol removed per year since 2023, according to new research, the Morning Advertiser reported on June 3.
The analysis, produced by Oxford Economics and commissioned by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) and The Brewers of Europe, found the revised duty system had encouraged growth in lower strength beer sales and supported greater consumer choice.
Under the Alcohol Duty Review, which came into effect in August 2023, drinks of 3.4% ABV and below were given a lower tax rate, alongside the introduction of draught duty relief to support pubs.
The BBPA said sales of lower strength beers, classed as between 1.3% and 3.4% ABV, had grown from 0.4% of the market in 2022, equivalent to 35m pints, to more than 12%, or 912m pints.
The trade body said the change had encouraged brewers to invest in new lower strength beer ranges, giving pub customers more options while supporting public health objectives.
BBPA chief executive Emma McClarkin said: “It is clear that a progressive alcohol duty regime that incentivises lower strength products can help grow the economy, give people more options, and support

India: Carlsberg India strengthens board as IPO plans gather momentum
|
Carlsberg India is strengthening its governance ahead of a planned initial public offering (IPO), adding four directors to its board and converting itself into a public limited company as the brewer prepares for a potential stock market debut, The Economic Times reported on June 4.
The maker of Carlsberg and Tuborg beer has appointed former PepsiCo and Vodafone executive Samaresh Parida, former Union health secretary CK Mishra, former L'Oreal India chairman and MD Amit Jain, and Gurveen Singh, chief human resources officer at Reckitt Benckiser, according to two officials who didn't wish to be named.
The appointments bring expertise across consumer goods, public policy, leadership and human resources as the Indian unit of the Danish brewer advances its listing preparations, where it could seek a valuation of about ₹30,000-35,000 crore. At present, United Breweries, which controls half the country's beer market, has a market cap of ₹35,377 crore.
"The conversion to a public limited company is where the IPO journey begins," said Vimal Taparia, partner at Morphis Management Services, a Mumbai-based boutique firm specialising in IPO advisory. "A private company can get away with 2 or 3 directors-usually the founders themselves. But the moment you want public investors to put their money in,

World: Major Heineken shareholders urge appointment of an external CEO
|
Major shareholders in Heineken have urged the Dutch brewer to appoint an external chief executive to succeed Dolf van den Brink, the Financial Times reported on June 5, citing two top-15 investors.
The brewer's board is divided over whether to promote an internal candidate or bring in an outsider, the newspaper added, citing people familiar with the matter.
Reuters could not immediately verify the FT report. Heineken did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for a comment.
Van den Brink stepped down on May 31 after nearly six years at the helm, as the industry grapples with tepid beer demand.
Last month, Heineken said the search for van den Brink's successor was progressing well and expected to conclude soon.
Two top-15 investors told the FT that the family-controlled group should drop its tradition of promoting insiders and appoint an external candidate to revive performance.
In February, Heineken said it would cut up to 6,000 jobs globally and lowered its expectations for 2026 profit growth, as the brewer and its peers faced subdued demand.

Ireland: Irish micro-breweries muscled out of events by multinational giants
|
An Irish farmer and micro-brewer has warned that exclusive deals between drinks companies and events risk creating a monopoly to the detriment of independent brewers, The Irish Examiner reported on June 3.
In a world where exposure is vital to create a client base, indigenous micro-breweries struggle to get featured at events when competing against multinationals.
Tillage farmer and Ballykilcavan Brewery owner, David Walsh-Kemmis, took to social media explaining that gaining market access has become increasingly difficult with larger companies like Heineken and Diageo securing “partnership arrangements” for events.
Speaking to the Irish Examiner, he said these arrangements can occur when a company buys into an event and “the event organiser in return gives them exclusivity on beer sales.”
“So these deals then just create a monopoly when it comes to these larger brands who can just muscle in.”
Responding, a Heineken Ireland spokesperson said: “Heineken has been supporting live events in Ireland for decades and has invested millions of euros to support live music, sporting events and local festivals. It is standard practice within the sector that the event operator will offer exclusive pouring rights to sponsors.”
Mr Walsh-Kemmis, who produces approximately 40,000 litres of beer a year across eight products. He uses his own

Jamaica: Jamaica’s leading brewer Red Stripe names first female managing director
|
Red Stripe has appointed Holly Bostock as managing director, effective July 1, replacing Daaf van Tilburg, who moves to a regional role in Heineken's Asia Pacific division — the latest in a pattern of three-year rotations at the helm of Jamaica's most recognised brewery, the Jamaica Gleaner reported on June 2.
Bostock, a British national who has led Heineken's Saint Lucia operation since July 2023, becomes the first woman to head Red Stripe in its century-long history and the fourth managing director appointed since Heineken acquired the brewery from Diageo in October 2015.
"I look forward to working with the talented team to build on its success, drive sustainable growth, and continue contributing to Jamaica's economic and social development," Bostock said.
Van Tilburg, a Dutch national, will serve as managing director for Heineken's Asia Pacific portfolio, supporting operating companies across the region on what the company described as growth, productivity, and organisational transformation. During his three years at Red Stripe, van Tilburg oversaw what Heineken called a period of strong performance, launched new products targeting consumers shifting towards higher-strength drinks, and presided over a turnaround at Celebration Brands Limited, the brewery's sales and distribution joint venture. Heineken does not typically disaggregate Red Stripe's

Kenya: Heineken appeals US$1.78M interest award in Kenya distribution dispute with Maxam Ltd
|
Dutch brewing giant Heineken has filed a fresh appeal in Kenya’s Court of Appeal seeking to overturn a Kes 230 million (US$1.78 million) interest award attached to a Kes 1.47 billion (US$11.4 million) damages judgment in favour of distributor Maxam Ltd, a company associated with Kenyan businessman Ngugi Kiuna, Food Business Middle East & Africa reported on June 5.
The dispute centres on whether interest can be added to a damages award after the conclusion of court proceedings when it was neither pleaded nor granted in the original judgments.
The Court of Appeal has acknowledged that the issue raises a legitimate legal question and has granted Heineken a conditional stay of execution on the full Sh1.7 billion (US$13.2 million) payout pending determination of the appeal.
As part of the order, the brewer must provide a bank guarantee of Sh250 million (US$1.94 million) within 30 days. Failure to do so will automatically lift the stay and allow lower court proceedings relating to payment to continue.
The case dates back to January 2016 when Heineken East Africa Import Company Ltd and Heineken International B.V. terminated a distributorship agreement signed in May 2013 with Maxam Ltd and two affiliated companies.
