India: Can shortage hits beer as stock reaches a ‘supply cliff’
|
The aluminium can shortage is reported to be about to cause a potential ₹11,500 crore (£900k) disruption as stock from major Indian suppliers falls to just 10–20% of normal capacity, The Drinks Business (db) reported on April 28.
According to Hindu Businessline, supplies from the main manufacturers in the market Ball and Canpack have fallen “sharply” with the impact creating a deficit of aluminium cans in a crisis that is set to affect domestic supply.
The situation follows a global aluminium price spike of around 47–50% year-on-year to approximately US$3,600 per tonne, sharply raising import costs across India which is now fast-becoming dependent upon getting cans from overseas. India’s drinks industry recently secured a government delay to new quality certification rules for aluminium cans amid all of the rising fears of severe supply shortages. at the start of the year, producers already warned that limited domestic capacity and import bottlenecks could disrupt peak summer sales.
Additionally, the Federation of European Business in India asked India to temporarily axe 10% of import duties on key packaging materials, warning of potential shortages linked to disruption from the US-Iran conflict.
Local reports have revealed that store shelves across Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Pune are thinning and that retailers

South Korea: Non-alcoholic beverages enjoying rapidly rising sales in South Korea
|
Sales of non-alcoholic beverages are rapidly rising in South Korea as consumers drink less and prioritize health, with younger generations leading the shift toward alcohol-free alternatives, the Pulse reported on April 27.
According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp. (aT) on Sunday, the average number of drinks consumed per drinking day fell to 6.6 glasses last year, down 0.1 from 2023. The figure had risen from 6.7 in 2020 to 7 in 2021 before trending downward.
The average monthly drinking frequency per person also declined to 8.8 days last year, down 0.2 days from 2023 and below the 9 days recorded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The drop was particularly noticeable among people in their 20s and 30s. Compared with 2020, drinking frequency among women in their 20s fell from 8.8 to 7.2 days, while for men in their 30s it declined from 10.2 to 9.3 days.
The decline in alcohol consumption is largely attributed to a growing emphasis on health, along with cultural shifts that favor socializing without drinking and a reduction in company gatherings.
This trend is fueling demand for non-alcoholic alternatives at social events. The category is expanding beyond beer into wine, gaining traction not only in large

India: United Breweries tax bill slashed 94% in major win
|
United Breweries Limited has secured a significant victory in a tax litigation case, with its earlier confirmed tax demand and penalty drastically reduced. The company announced that a demand and penalty totaling ₹29,00,048 has been cut to ₹1,85,878, representing a reduction of over 94%, Whalesbook reported on April 25.
This substantial reduction eases a potential financial burden for the company and marks a positive development in its ongoing tax litigation.
United Breweries has navigated several significant tax disputes in recent years. In 2023, it faced a ₹1,136 crore tax demand from the Directorate General of GST Intelligence. More recently, the company disclosed a ₹31.88 crore GST demand in March 2026 and a ₹22.50 crore demand from Maharashtra authorities in April 2026. Adding to these challenges, the Supreme Court dismissed the company's appeals in March 2026 concerning a long-standing tax dispute.
While the immediate financial liability for this specific case is now minimal at ₹1.86 lakh in penalties, the matter is not fully resolved. United Breweries plans to file a further appeal against the residual demand before the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) seeking additional relief. Investors will track the outcome of this appeal, as well as any further developments on other significant tax demands

Moldova: Efes Moldova invests more than 3 million euros in production modernization
|
According to Alpan Akpece, General Director of Efes Moldova, the enterprise has completed a large investment project on modernization of production lines - the most important one both for the company itself and for the development of the brewing industry of the country, Logos Press reported on April 24.
“Our total investment amounted to more than €3 million and was aimed at increasing production capacity, improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact. In particular, the company invested €2.1 million in a new PET filling and labeling line from Krones. This has increased capacity by 15% to 12,000 bottles per hour, ensuring consistently high product quality. 450 thousand euros were invested in the expansion of the KEG line, thus increasing the plant’s capacity from 120 to 180 kegs per hour. In addition, a modern Swiss production filter worth about 565 thousand euros was installed, which optimizes the filtration process and reduces the burden on the environment,” Akpece said.
Alpan Akpece noted that Efes Moldova annually launches new products on the market, adapted to the local demand. It is also the largest taxpayer: in 2025 alone, the company transferred about $33 million to the state budget in the form of taxes and excise duties.

UK: Damm launching gluten-free Daura 0.0% beer in the UK
|
Barcelona-founded brewer Damm, celebrating its 150th anniversary, is launching gluten-free Daura 0.0% in the UK following demand; with an initial, exclusive launch in Tesco, the Bar Magazine reported on April 28.
Daura has long been recognised as a trusted choice, being the most award-winning gluten-free lager in the world for preserving both body and taste. Daura 0.0% offers this same flavour and character in a non-alcoholic beer with certified gluten-free status – a combination that is scarce in the UK market.
Consumption of products without gluten has been growing alongside the call for a premium, alcohol-free beer to support moderation. With Daura 0.0%, those with an intolerance or opting to avoid gluten have a trusted alcohol-free brand associated with the critically acclaimed Daura.
Luke White, Damm UK Managing Director explains:
“We know from consumer insight that there is demand for beers that work for people managing dietary requirements as well as those moderating their alcohol intake. Ukraine: Barley production, exports forecast to increase in 2026/27
|
In the 2026/27 marketing year, Ukraine is expected to increase corn and barley production, while wheat output is projected to decline. This is stated in the forecast by the Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (FAS USDA).
Barley production in 2026/27 may increase to 6.1 million tonnes (+9%), while exports could jump to 4.2 million tonnes (+133%).
However, current-season exports declined sharply. From July 2025 to February 2026, shipments totaled 1.3 million tonnes, down 36% year-on-year. About 80% went to China (490,000 tonnes), Turkey (300,000 tonnes), Libya (138,000 tonnes) and Saudi Arabia (121,000 tonnes).
Due to weak exports, ending stocks rose to 1.95 million tonnes versus 305,000 tonnes a year earlier.
FAS also highlights a general slowdown in Ukraine’s grain export momentum. Average monthly shipments of wheat, barley and corn from July 2025 to March 2026 were 22% lower than a year earlier.
The EU is gradually losing its position as a key market, accounting for 29% of exports in 2025 versus 41% in 2024. This mainly affected wheat and barley after the introduction of import quotas in October 2025.
Additional pressure comes from low global prices and high inventories, while Ukrainian farmers often hold stocks in anticipation of better market conditions.

India: Pernod Ricard reportedly exploring an India IPO
|
Royal Stag owner Pernod Ricard is reportedly exploring an initial public offering (IPO) of its Indian business, The Spirits Business reported on April 23.
According to a report by Bloomberg this week, the French spirits giant has allegedly called in advisers regarding an IPO for its Indian unit, citing ‘people familiar with the matter’. The publication claims that Pernod has begun working with Goldman Sachs Group and legal firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas on the potential public listing.
When asked about the rumour, Pernod Ricard did not deny it but stated that the business “regularly assesses and evaluates its strategic opportunities and is continuously exploring options to create value for its shareholders, including optimising its capital structure”.
The statement continued: “This is a usual process in line with management’s mission of delivering value to shareholders, employees, clients and stakeholders.
“Pernod Ricard nonetheless highlights that, at this stage, no decision has been made regarding any particular action or involving any of these options.”
In February, Pernod declined to comment on an earlier report by Bloomberg that alleged it was in discussions with potential advisors over an IPO in India.
Last week, Pernod Ricard reported its third-quarter (Q3) sales, which grew organically by 0.1% to €1.94 billion (US$2.28bn).
