Brewery news UK: UK alcohol duty stalls as Treasury intake plateaus
New figures from UK’s HMRC show a steady but unremarkable stream of alcohol duty receipts, with little evidence that recent reforms have strengthened the public purse. Meanwhile, industry voices have argued that rising rates may be dampening demand, The Drinks Business reported on April 23.

Wine and spirits remain the principal contributors to alcohol duty income, though their performance appears to have softened in the latest financial year. The data arrives as the Government prepares to review its reworked duty regime.

According to HM Revenue and Customs, alcohol duty receipts have risen from £7.9 billion in 2006 to 2007 to £12.4 billion in 2025 to 2026. Over the same period, receipts as a share of GDP have edged down from 0.5% to 0.4%, as per the latest dataset published on 23 April.

The figures suggest a long view of gradual expansion in nominal terms, though without keeping pace proportionally with the wider economy. Receipts climbed to £12.1 billion in 2020 to 2021 from £11.8 billion the previous year, driven largely by stronger returns from spirits and wine.

That upward movement proved temporary, with receipts falling from £13.1 billion in 2021 to 2022 to £12.4 billion in 2022 to 2023, a shift HMRC attributes to ...More info on site

Brewery news India: India turns scrutiny on AB InBev as antitrust probe shifts course
Anheuser-Busch InBev has been drawn into the centre of an antitrust investigation in India after years of cooperation as a witness. According to documents reviewed by Reuters, India’s Competition Commission of India reclassified the brewer in November 2025 as a “party under investigation”, a move that has triggered a legal challenge, The Drinks Business reported on April 22.

The company has argued in court filings that this shift occurred without prior notice, hearing or formal reasoning, describing the step as contrary to procedural fairness. In a hearing on 16 April, a court in Karnataka agreed to pause the investigation into AB InBev, according to two sources cited by Reuters, with one stating that the judge saw merit in the brewer’s objections.

At the heart of the case lies an inquiry launched in 2022 into 42 alcohol retailers in Telangana, India’s largest beer-consuming state. The regulator is examining allegations that these retailers coordinated to favour AB InBev brands while excluding rivals such as Heineken, United Breweries and Carlsberg.

Court papers reveal that the CCI found merit in claims that certain retailers entered arrangements to stock and promote AB InBev beers, supported by incentives tied to exclusivity. As per the same filings, the complainant’s identity ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: DB Breweries launches New Zealand-first trial of zero-alcohol beer on tap
DB Breweries has launched a New Zealand-first trial of zero-alcohol beer on tap, with Heineken 0.0 now available on draught at two Auckland venues, Empire Tavern and Moretons, the Beer & Brewer reported on April 23.

The pilot will test new ways of serving zero-alcohol beer on tap in New Zealand conditions and is the first trial of its kind in the local market.

Unlike markets overseas, where draught beer is typically not stored in cool rooms, Kiwis expect their beer to be served icy cold.

Local hospitality systems commonly use chilled rooms and glycol-cooled lines. While this works well for beer containing alcohol, it would cause zero-alcohol beer to freeze.

This has been one of the key barriers preventing zero-alcohol beer from being available on tap in New Zealand.

This trial will test the technical feasibility of serving high quality zero-alcohol beer on tap, with the aim of scaling the solution nationally, if successful.

DB Breweries Managing Director, Peter Hart, says the trial could mark a significant turning point for zero-alcohol beer in New Zealand.

“We believe that if this trial is successful, it could open the door to a new era for zero-alcohol beer in New Zealand – one where choosing not to drink alcohol ...More info on site

Brewery news India: B9 Beverages’ founder and CEO to step down this week - report
B9 Beverages, the maker of Bira 91, is set for a leadership change with founder and CEO Ankur Jain expected to step down this week, according to a report by Mint on April 23.

The report said a new chief executive is likely to be appointed as investors and lenders move to stabilise the company, which has been facing financial stress and has halted operations since around September 2025.

As part of the proposed revival plan, investors are preparing to infuse around ₹400 crore at a reduced valuation, with an option to add another ₹100 crore, according to people cited in the report. The funds are expected to be used to clear liabilities and restart the business.

The company has been dealing with mounting financial challenges, including salary delays running into several crores and increasing pressure from vendors. The situation has also led to creditor action, with some lenders initiating proceedings before the National Company Law Tribunal, the report noted.

B9 Beverages, founded in 2015, had emerged as a prominent venture-backed consumer brand with backing from investors such as Peak XV Partners, Sofina and Kirin Holdings. The company was last valued at about $625 million following a funding round in early 2024.

Hops news New Zealand: Hop farmers work to brew new markets
New Zealand’s hop farmers who have wrapped up this season's harvest are flying the flag in the United States, despite is being a complex time for trading with that key market, RNZ reported on April 22.

Thirsty Americans enjoy New Zealand hops in their tap and bottled beers, and the country has been through a craft beer boom in recent years.

But the market once considered a home-run is now much more difficult and expensive for hop exporters to access, due to increased import tariffs, production costs and shipping challenges in the global supply chain.

Hop Revolution grows hops key to beer brewing on 325 hectares across two farms in Tapawera in the Tasman district at the top of the South Island.

The company supplies its hops to local Stoke beers, one of the many ventures of late craft beer legend Terry McCashin, an angel investor in Hop Revolution in its earlier years.

The exports are also now on board ships to the US, into Europe but also into newer markets like Mexico.

Company co-founder and plant scientist, Dr Susan Wheeler said the US remained its dominant market, but import tariffs enforced last year and extra costs forced some diversification.

"The US has remained a major customer ...More info on site
