Brewery news USA & Belgium: Sapporo to sell Stone Brewing’s California facility to Duvel Moortgat
Sapporo Breweries has taken the decision to reduce its production footprint in the US, despite claiming that the sales of its namesake beer brand in the country “have continued to grow robustly”, Global Drinks Intel reported on April 21.

The Japanese group, which started off with one brewery in the US nine years ago before buying two more in 2022, is reducing its presence in the country to one production facility again. Having found a buyer for its Anchor Brewing business in 2024, Sapporo has agreed the divestment of one of the two facilities inherited through 2022’s purchase of Stone Brewing.

Belgian brewer Duvel Moortgat will pay an undisclosed sum for Stone’s brewery in California, which will be overseen by Duvel’s Firestone Walker unit in the state as well as another of its subsidiaries in the country, which was not named.

Once completed, the transaction will reduce Sapporo’s domestic production presence to Stone’s other brewery, in Richmond, Virginia. Sapporo’s four Sleeman Breweries facilities in Canada will provide supplementary service for the US, while the “production structure … will be reconsidered and changed as necessary to ensure optimal development”.

The focus will remain on the Sapporo brand, which has been brewed domestically in the US ...More info on site

Brewery news Ethiopia: Heineken Ethiopia’s regional operations constrained by fuel supply issues
Heineken Ethiopia said fuel-related disruptions linked to global market pressures have begun affecting its operations outside Addis Ababa, constraining distribution and contributing to weaker regional performance, Birrmetrics reported on April 20.

The company’s managing director Bart De Keninck told Birrmetrics that the brewer introduced a new product to the Ethiopian market, Desperados, over the weekend, describing the launch as a signal that consumer activity in Addis Ababa remains resilient.

However, he said market conditions differ sharply across the country. “Outside of Addis Ababa, everything is standing still basically. So that has a big impact,” he said, citing fuel challenges that have reduced market activity in regional areas.

The comments come weeks after Birrmetrics reported that fuel shortages were affecting industrial supply chains, including brewing operations. In that report, an industry source said government fuel allocations had covered only about two-thirds of demand over a three-month period, forcing companies to scale back production in some regional facilities and rely on alternative arrangements to secure fuel.

“The real issue isn’t production right now, it’s getting the products across the country,” the source said at the time.

According to Bart, the beer industry has contracted significantly, with performance estimated at around 30 to 40 percent of normal levels. ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Planned tax stamp policy could cause 100% drop in brewers’ profits
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Thibaut Boidin, has warned that the planned tax stamp policy by the Nigerian government could cause a 100% decrease in profits across the brewing industry and destabilise the sector, Nairametrics reported on April 19.

Speaking during the company’s 80th pre-AGM media briefing in Lagos, Boidin said manufacturers need policy predictability and fiscal stability to sustain investments and support economic growth.

According to him, while government reforms aimed at boosting revenue are understandable, some measures may create severe unintended consequences for industries already operating under difficult conditions.

Brewery news Ethiopia: Heineken introduces Desperados beer to the Ethiopian market
Heineken Ethiopia has introduced Desperados beer to the Ethiopian market through an investment close to 500 million birr, as the brewer expands its premium portfolio in the country, Birrmetrics reported on April 18.

The company launched the premium brand on Saturday at a gathering, where members of the management team stepped into an unexpected choreographed sequence during the unveiling, drawing attention at the centre of the event.

The managing director of Heineken Ethiopia, Bart De Keninck, told Birrmetrics during the launch program that the company invested "close to half a billion birr", mainly to acquire a flavouring machine.

The company said the initial focus will be on urban centres and nightlife venues, where demand for premium and differentiated beverages is rising.

Desperados carries an alcohol content of 5.9 percent and is positioned as a lager with a Latin-inspired profile built around agave spirit flavouring that gives it a tequila-like character. The formulation relies on agave-derived aromatic notes rather than traditional spirit content, designed to replicate a cocktail-style drinking experience.

Part of Heineken’s global portfolio, Desperados is among the brewer’s most widely distributed flavoured beers, available in more than 50 countries across Europe, Latin America, Africa and parts of Asia.

Europe remains its core market, with strong ...More info on site
