India: Youngest legal-age consumers reshaping how alcohol is consumed in India
|
India’s youngest legal-age consumers are reshaping how alcohol is consumed, not by stepping away from it, but by redefining the terms of engagement. That is the central takeaway from a conversation with Debasree Dasgupta, Chief Marketing Officer, Pernod Ricard India, the Economic Times reported on April 11.
At a time when global discourse often frames Gen Z as drinking less, Dasgupta offers a more nuanced view from within India’s booming alco-bev market, one that ties directly into premiumisation, cultural aspiration, and shifting social behaviour.
She also underscored the scale of the opportunity, noting that India is the world’s largest whisky market, with Pernod Ricard India holding over 50% market share in the premium whisky segment.
There’s a lot of discussion around Gen Z drinking less which is a wider industry concern. But Dasgupta’s response is clear: the shift is real, but not in the way it is often framed.
While younger consumers may be moderating volumes, “they are not rejecting the category, they are drinking better,” she said, positioning this behavioural change as a structural tailwind rather than a threat.
India, she emphasised, continues to see strong category expansion, with “around 30 million new Legal Drinking Age (LDA+) consumers entering the fold every year,” ensuring

Nigeria: International Breweries reports its first profit in seven years in 2025
|
International Breweries Plc has reported its first profit in seven years in 2025, helped by a sharp rise in sales and a largely stable naira, according to the company’s audited financial results filed with the Nigerian Exchange on April 10.
The AB InBev-controlled company reported a net profit of N51 billion for the year ended December 2025, compared with a loss of N113.6 billion in 2024. The turnaround comes as relative stability in the naira reduced the scale of foreign exchange losses that had repeatedly wiped out operating gains.
Revenue from sales climbed 21 percent to N619 billion, supported by price increases, improved volumes, and a more predictable operating environment. Gross profit rose to N210 billion from N131.35 billion a year earlier, reflecting stronger sales despite elevated input costs.
The sharper shift, however, came below the operating line. In 2024, steep currency devaluations that saw the naira shed about 41 percent of its value and hedge revaluations produced over N166 billion in FX-related losses, pushing the brewer deeper into the red.
But with the naira posting a 7.5 percent gain last year for the first time in more than a decade, net FX losses narrowed sharply to about N14 billion, helped by lower realised

Australia: Malting, feed barley exports up 11% each in February 2026
|
Australia exported 1,509,584 tonnes of barley and 188,666t of sorghum in February, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
On barley, the feed component totalled 1,137,916t, up 11 percent from the volume shipped in January.
China was once again the biggest market by far, taking 900,174t of the feed total, followed by Saudi Arabia on 98,666t and Vietnam on 38,450t.
Malting barley exports in February totalled 371,668t, up 11pc from the 337,671t shipped in January.
China on 323,505t followed by Vietnam on 35,587t and Japan on 6240t were February’s three biggest malting barley markets.
February sorghum exports increased more than twelve-fold from the January total of 15,072t to reflect new-crop availability thanks to commencement of the southern Queensland harvest.
McDonald Pelz senior broker Sam Roache said barley exports for February set a consecutive record month.
“This number is above shipping stems and sets the tone for more potential record-breaking months in March and April,” Mr Roache said.
“Demand continues in China at today’s season-high prices, with globally price competition remaining limited and Australian prices remains fairly competitive, especially in the germination and FAQ categories.
“China shipments are accounting for more than 80pc of the total, which is improving as Middle East demand drops off with

Canada & Colombia: Canada resumes malting barley Supplies to Colombia
|
Canada’s barley growers are regaining a lost customer, The Western Producer reported on April 13.
Colombia purchased 56,000 tonnes of the crop in 2025.
That was the South American country’s first major purchase of Canadian barley in about a decade.
Peter Watts, managing director of the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC), said Colombia regularly purchased 50,000 to 100,000 tonnes of Canadian barley between 2000 and 2013.
Canada had a good trading relationship with Bavaria, the largest brewing company in the country. It buys virtually all the malting barley exported into Colombia.
Bavaria was purchased by SABMiller in 2005, which was in turn swallowed up by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016.
Watts speculates that the change in ownership resulted in morphing quality specifications. Canadian barley is high in protein and sometimes brewers are looking for something more moderate.
AB InBev also has notoriously strict specifications on tendering, including payment specifications. Some suppliers may not have wanted to meet those specifications.
Price was also likely a factor. Canadian barley was sold at a premium to competitors for many years.
The upshot was that purchases from Canada stopped for about a decade.
Canada needs new markets for malting barley now that Australia is back in the Chinese market.
But about a year ago, Canadian
