World: Carlsberg to continue to keep beer at heard of its business, CEO says
|
Carlsberg will continue to keep beer at the heart of its business, even as the share of local beer brands has, for the first time, fallen below half of the group's total sales. This was stated in an interview conducted by the Financial Times with the Danish brewing giant's CEO, Jacob Aarup-Andersen.
"We have a very strong heritage and a strong brewing DNA in the company, and I will not let go of that. Carlsberg is, at its core, a brewery," Aarup-Andersen told the British financial newspaper.
Aarup-Andersen noted that consumers' growing focus on moderation has led the company to strengthen its offerings in soft drinks and non-alcoholic beverages, but he also emphasized that beer remains crucial for the group's relevance.
In 2025, beer brands accounted for 49 percent of sales, while soft drinks and non-alcoholic beverages had risen to about one third.

Canada: Craft beer in Canada losing its fizz
|
After years of seemingly unlimited growth for the craft beer industry, the party is winding down, CBC reported on January 18.
Beer sales are down across the board and the number of breweries in Canada has started to decline, a shift driven by a mix of cost pressures and changing consumer tastes and social habits.
"A lot of us who'd been in it since the start of the small breweries knew at some point there had to be a bit of a correction," said Ben Leon, co-founder and CEO of Dandy Brewing in Calgary.
"We weren't going to ride this rocket ship forever."
But while the 2010s hype around craft beer might be over, there are still businesses finding success by offering different drinks and taking a more expansive view of what a brewery can be.
In 2014, Leon opened his brewery's first location inside a tiny warehouse space in the city's north-east.
It was good timing. All over North America, millennials were going crazy for craft beer, and in Alberta, the government had recently changed rules to help microbreweries get their product to market.
"There was a huge thirst in Alberta for craft beer," said Leon, who recalls getting emails about new breweries

India: AB InBev to expand facility in Telangana
|
AB InBev, the world's largest brewer, said it will invest a significant amount for expanding its existing facility in Telangana. The announcement came during the Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy-led ‘Telangana Rising’ delegation’s meeting with John Blood, chief legal and corporate affairs officer, AB InBev, during the WEF 2026 in Davos on January 21.
The company has an operational presence in over 50 countries. In Telangana, it has two manufacturing plants, with 600 employees. The new investment in expansion would generate significant additional revenue every year for the state.
“Revenue generation and capacity building are key to the state's roadmap for becoming a $3-trillion economy by 2047 under Telangana Rising 2047 vision,” said Revanth Reddy.
Industries minister D. Sridhar Babu said that with policy stability, world-class infrastructure, and ease of doing business, we are building sustained investor confidence to position the state as an investment magnet. The meeting also focused on potential areas of engagement in areas like circular water use, CSR spending in Telangana with a focus on women empowerment, education and skill development.

Germany: World’s oldest monastic brewery Weltenburger being sold amid plunging sales
|
The world’s oldest monastic brewery, Germany’s Weltenburger, is being sold to the Munich brewers Schneider Weisse as part of consolidation in the sector in response to plunging sales, The Guardian reported on January 19.
Beer has been brewed at Weltenburg Abbey, a stunning, still active monastery on the banks of the Danube in Bavaria, for nearly 1,000 years.
Although the facility is still owned by the Catholic church, the Benedictine monks handed over production of the brand’s award-winning lager and signature dark brews half a century ago to hired staff from the Bischofshof brewery, which will also be sold to Schneider.
The diocese of Regensburg and Schneider Weisse agreed on the sale after several years in which Weltenburger’s business was in the red, meaning the church had to inject its own funds to prop it up, local media reported.
Till Hedrich, the managing director of both Weltenburger and Bischofhof, said the planned solution could head off the threat of complete closure or break-up of the breweries by an investor with “no connection to the region”, while preserving an “important piece of Bavarian brewing tradition” in the long run.

UK & Ireland: Molson Coors launches Caffrey’s Black Stout to meet growing demand for stouts
|
Molson Coors Beverage Company has launched Caffrey’s Black Stout to meet growing consumer demand for the beer style. Leaning on brand heritage to sell the new beer, the brewer admitted that this is “a clear opportunity” that will “play a role in the category’s next phase of growth”, The Drinks Business reported on January 15.
The 3.4% ABV nitrogen-infused beer is being launched amid the stout beer style seeing a resurgence in popularity and commanding more attention among drinkers and has been launched at a time when Guinness, owned by Diageo, is rising in popularity along with sales of Murphy’s Irish Stout skyrocketing with volume up 607% and value up 666% in the past year, according to Murphy’s brand owner Heineken.
Speaking to the drinks business, Molson Coors UK sales director for the UK & Ireland Kev Fawell said: “Stout is expanding rapidly, driven by drinkers looking for more choice and quality. Our Caffrey’s Black Stout is a serious entry, and we’re backing it with the investment and ambition it deserves. Australia: Malting barley shipments drop in November while feed barley up 10 times compared to October 2025
|
Australia exported 912,990 tonnes of barley and 29,910t of sorghum in November, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
At 852,047t, the feed barley figure for the month is more than 10 times the 78,475t shipped in October, with China on 627,616t, Saudi Arabia on 117,045t, Kuwait on 41,335t, and the United Arab Emirates the four biggest customers.
Mexico on 30,000t and China, 19,136t were the only markets to take more than 5000t of November-shipped malting barley, which totaled 60,943t, down 37 percent from the 96,170t shipped in October.
China was the destination for 24,761t, or 83pc, of November-shipped sorghum, with The Philippines on 2521t and Taiwan on 2218t the only other markets to take more than 1000t.
McDonald Pelz senior broker Sam Roache said barley shipments in the first real new- crop month have started with a bang.
“They show a record 912,990t shipped versus sub 200,000t in October,” Mr Roache said.
“Demand has been constant, with the lower shipping months into the end of the year a product of tight available stocks.”
Mr Roache said volume was expected to grow into December and January, and remain consistently high for the year, with record production matching record import demand in China.

Ireland: Irish Distillers confirm price hikes across portion of its portfolio
|
One of Ireland’s leading suppliers of spirits and producer of some of the world’s most well-known Irish whiskeys has confirmed price hikes across a portion of its portfolio from next month, MSN reported on January 15.
Irish Distillers told the Irish Examiner that it was in the process of communicating price increases to its customers, which will mark the distiller's first price hike since August 2023.
It comes just a day after Guinness-owner Diageo announced plans to increase prices of draught products to publicans by 7c, with punters set to face a 20c price increase.
In a statement, Irish Distillers said: "Like many businesses, we continue to operate in a dynamic cost environment.
"As a result, we will be implementing a small increase across a portion of our portfolio from 22nd February 2026 – the first price increase since August 2023."
"We are in the process of communicating this change to our customers, and our sales teams will continue to engage with them directly. We would like to thank our customers for their continued support and understanding.”
Asked how much it will increase prices by, Irish Distillers said it "does not disclose commercially sensitive information."
