Brewery news USA, MD: Watchtower Brewing Company becomes Aberdeen’s first brewery
Three Harford County friends have opened Watchtower Brewing Company in Aberdeen, marking the first brewery in the city and serving as part of a larger effort to revitalize the downtown area, wmar2news.com reported on December 3.

The brewery officially opened Tuesday evening following a ribbon-cutting ceremony that drew elected leaders, business leaders and the Aberdeen High School band in a show of community support for the new small business.

"Today feels pretty amazing, and because it's about more than watchtower, it's about Aberdeen," said Joe Fino, Watchtower Brewing co-founder.

"It's been great to be a part of the growth of downtown, and it's really nice to be able to give back to the community," he added.

The City of Aberdeen serves as the landlord for the brewery, demonstrating the local investment in the business's success as part of broader downtown development efforts.

The brewery is right next to Festival Park, and a new walkway will take folks from the park to the city's main street, West Bel Air Avenue.

"Seeing people enjoy the beer and just enjoy the fellowship, just makes me really happy," Frank Young, one of the co-founders, told WMAR-2 News. "Just happy and proud of what we've been able to build."

The owners have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Trinity Brewing Company being acquired by West Brewing of Castle Rock
Trinity Brewing Company, a popular west side brewery and eatery, is being acquired by a Castle Rock brewery, Fox21News reported on December 1.

According to a post by Trinity Brewing on Facebook, the brewery’s last day of operation will be Dec. 22. The location at 1466 Garden of the Gods Road will then become the second location for 105 West Brewing out of Castle Rock.

“While we’re excited about this new chapter, we also want to take a moment to celebrate Trinity Brewing for their 17 amazing years of fun, creativity, and community,” said 105 West Brewing founder and owner Eric Seufert. “We’ll keep a few of Trinity’s traditions alive, while adding our own 105 West flair.”

105 West Brewing is so named because it sits on the 105th West meridian line, which incidentally, so does the Trinity Brewing location. The new brewery said it would keep the 105 West name for that reason.

According to it’s website, 105 West Brewing is a gratuity-free establishment that prides itself on paying its staff a living wage not dependent on tips. 105 West at Garden of the Gods will feature 24 taps of 105 West beer, wood-fired pizza and smoked wings, Bear’l Cellars wine, draft mead, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, SK: Black Bridge Brewery partnering with 9 Mile Legacy Brewing, moving production to Saskatoon
Black Bridge Brewery is partnering with 9 Mile Legacy Brewing and moving production from Swift Current to Saskatoon, West Central Online reported on December 3.

The two breweries are entering a joint venture that will see them partner on beverage production, distribution, and community investment.

That also means the Black Bridge taproom will be closing by December 20.

"It's a joint venture essentially kind of a formal commitment of businesses to work together and to each contribute something to the broader goal," said Shawn Moen, CEO of 9 Mile Legacy. "We've known (Black Bridge owners) Clay and Kari Stenson for a while since we started the brewery and they've become excellent friends. Both of our businesses just reached a point where we found we could do more together. We've committed to doing that together. We've committed to centralizing our production and working together to continue to grow our market share."

That means the physical location for Black Bridge in Swift Current is closing down this month.

"The tap room that everyone loves, we love included, will be closing before Christmas as we look to reposition the Black Bridge business now in Swift Current," Moen said. "We're keen to definitely look at some really intriguing ways ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Lafayette Brewing Company to close its doors for good on December 20
Lafayette Brewing Company, a Main Street staple in downtown Lafayette for 32 years, said Wednesday it will close its doors after business on Dec. 20, jconline.com reported on December 3.

In a Facebook post on the local brewery's page, owners Greg and Nancy Emig said they are humbled and honored by the support the Greater Lafayette community has shown the business over three decades.

When the Emigs opened the brewery in 1993, the Lafayette Brewing Company, 622 Main St., was one of about 200 independent brew pubs across the United States.

"We are honored by the small role we could play in craft beer’s uprising, and more importantly, the role we played in our community," the Emigs said in their Facebook post. "Downtown Lafayette has made a stunning transformation over the past three decades, evolving from a Main Street with every other building vacant into the vibrant and bustling model downtown we have today."

In a 2018 interview with the Journal & Courier, Greg said by that point the brewery had crafted about 400 to 500 brews, with the Black Angus Oatmeal Stout as the No. 1 seller.

Greg's start in the brewing business, he said, came when he was tending bar at the Knickerbocker ...More info on site

Barley news UK: AHDB releases 2026/2027 recommended lists of cereals and oilseeds
The Agricultural and Horticultural and Development Board (AHDB) has launched its 2026/2027 recommended lists of cereals and oilseeds online.

This comprehensive source of varietal guidance for farmers and agronomists includes a diverse set of cereal and oilseed varieties, with new options for mainstream and relatively niche markets.

With fewer varieties added than removed, the lists are more focused and include numerous varieties with big yield improvements.

For the third consecutive year, a new provisional UK Flour Millers (FM) Group 1 variety has been added to the winter wheat recommended list.

This list also features a strong new distilling soft Group 4 feed variety and several new hard Group 4 varieties. Although some of these Group 4s are very high yielding, some come with agronomic compromises.

The new winter barley list sees just three new varieties added, with more than a quarter of varieties on the list now featuring breeders’ claims for resistance or tolerance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV).

The 2026/2027 recommended list also features several new dual-use spring barley recommendations with potential to break into the competitive malting market.

The new winter oilseed rape list sees new recommendations in all categories. The majority have a UK recommendation, with some significant steps forward in yield and ...More info on site

Brewery news Thailand: Thailand relaxes afternoon alcohol ban to boost tourism
Thailand has temporarily lifted a decades-old ban on the sale of alcoholic drinks in the afternoons as it seeks to boost tourism, the BBC reported on December 2.

Liquor stores, restaurants and other accredited establishments can now sell beer, wine and spirits from 14:00 to 17:00 as part of a six-month trial.

The ban, which came into force in 1972, was primarily introduced to stop government employees from drinking during work hours. But it has long vexed visitors to the predominantly Buddhist country - which is also known for its vibrant party scene.

The move comes just days ahead of Christmas and the New Year holiday, both peak seasons for tourist arrivals.

Alcohol sales in the country are now allowed from 11:00 to midnight for the next 180 days while a committee studies its impact.

Previously, those who flouted the ban faced a fine of up to 10,000 baht (£235; $313).

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who took office in September, has promised to win back tourists as part of efforts to jumpstart the economy that has been held back by years of political turmoil.

"In the past, there were concerns that government employees would sneak out to drink, but it's a different time now," Deputy Prime ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Belfast Diageo strike suspended after ‘improved pay offer’
Strike action that a union claimed would lead to a Guinness Zero ‘drought’ has been suspended, The Irish News reported on December 4.

In a statement issued on December 4, union Unite said their planned eight-day strike action at Diageo in Belfast, “that would have seen shortages of Guinness Zero this Christmas, has been suspended following an improved pay offer from the employer”. Around 90 workers were set to strike on Friday 5th December but workers will now vote on the new deal ,they said.

Regional officer for the workforce Michael Keenan said: “Negotiations have resulted in an improved pay offer being made by Diageo and as an act of good will our reps voted to suspend the planned strike action to allow our members to consider and vote on it.”

The planned strike action followed a unanimous ballot rejecting a previous pay offer.

Diageo, however, had disputed the claim the strike would have caused any Guinness Zero shortage insisting there “will be no disruption to the supply of Guinness or Guinness 0.0 over the Christmas period” and that they had contingency plans in place.
