USA: Craft beer segment records its biggest reading of the year in Beer Purchasers’ Index
|
While still in contractionary territory (<50), the craft segment recorded its highest reading of the year in the National Beer Wholesalers Association‘s Beer Purchasers’ Index (BPI), Craft Brewing Business reported on August 4.
BPI is the only forward-looking indicator for distributors to measure expected beer demand. The index surveys beer distributors’ purchases across different segments and compares them to previous years. A reading greater than 50 indicates the segment is expanding, while a reading below 50 indicates the segment is contracting.
The overall BPI reading of 42 marks a 17-point decline from July 2024 but a 12-point month-to-month improvement from June 2025. The combination of index readings for at-risk inventory (43) and BPI (42) places the beer industry firmly in a cautionary holding pattern for the summer.
Across BPI segments:
• The imports index at 50 is 12 points above June 2025 and 23 points lower than July 2024
• The craft index at 25 is 10 points above June 2025 and five points lower than July 2024
• The premium lights index at 38 is five points above June 2025 and 25 points lower than July 2024

USA: AB InBev to invest $9 mln in its brewery in Baldwinsville, New York
|
Brewing giant Anheuser-Busch announced on August 5 it will invest $9 million this year to make improvements to its big brewery just outside of Baldwinsville, Syracuse.com reported.
The work will help expand the local brewery’s capacity to make “non beer” products like NÜTRL Vodka Seltzer and Skimmers Vodka Iced Tea, the company said in a news release.
Such products, which are a fast-growing sector of the alcohol market, have long been a specialty of the brewery located off Route 31 in the Radisson business park. As an example, Anheuser-Busch chose this brewery to launch its Bud Light Hard Seltzer line in 2021 and before that its Lime-A-Rita brand.
The plant is the largest brewery in New York state, bigger than Genesee in Rochester and F.X. Matt (Saranac) in Utica.
The new investment at what the company calls the “Baldwinsville brewery” also includes equipment maintenance and updates to the brewery’s refrigeration units. The company says it has invested $90 million in the Baldwinsville brewery in the past five years.

USA: Boston Beer founder Jim Koch returns as CEO
|
The Boston Beer Company announced on August 1 a leadership change effective August 15, 2025. Michael Spillane has decided to step down as CEO to focus on important personal matters. He will remain on the company’s board of directors, on which he has served since 2014, now in the capacity of a non-executive director.
Jim Koch, Boston Beer founder, brewer and chairman of the board, will assume the role of CEO. Koch was previously CEO of Boston Beer from its founding in 1984 until January 2001 and has remained chairman since 1984.
“Michael has been with Boston Beer for nearly 10 years, first as a board member and most recently as CEO for the past year and a half,” said Koch. “He’s given us a steady leadership hand during a dynamic time for our industry, and under his guidance, we delivered one of our most profitable quarters in many years in the second quarter. USA, TN: Wiseacre Brewing Company acquires Nashville’s Bearded Iris Brewing
|
Memphis-based Wiseacre Brewing Company has acquired Nashville’s Bearded Iris Brewing in a deal announced this week, combining two of Tennessee’s largest craft breweries, Beer Street Journal reported on August 4.
Wiseacre Brewing, through its Abel Brewing LLC, has applied for permit changes for Bearded Iris’ locations at 101 Van Buren St. and Sylvan Supply at 4101 Charlotte Ave.
Bearded Iris was founded in 2014 by Paul Vaughn, Matt Miller, and Kavon Togrye in Nashville, Tennessee. Wiseacre Brewing was established a year earlier in Memphis by brothers Kellan and Davin Bartosch. The merger is seen as a strategic alliance across the Volunteer State, aimed at overcoming challenges facing the craft beer industry, including rising costs, pandemic fallout, increasing insurance expenses, and shifting consumer preferences.
In October 2021, Atlanta-based Scofflaw Brewing founded IndieBrew, a brewing collective. Bearded Iris joined IndieBrew in December of that year. The collective provided shared business services, from HR to brewing operations, to enhance the long-term sustainability of member breweries. Bearded Iris co-founder Kavon Togrye was deeply involved in the initiative.
Discussions about IndieBrew have been scarce since late 2022. The acquisition of Bearded Iris, which does not involve Scofflaw Brewing, likely impacts the IndieBrew partnership.

USA, CO: Armillary Brewing Co. settles on its startup location in Colorado Springs
|
Kristin and Jeff Lockhart spent untold hours cruising Colorado Springs in search of the perfect location for their startup craft brewery, in arguably imperfect craft brewing times, Gazette.com reported on August 4.
The spot they ultimately settled on for Armillary Brewing Co., in the end cap of a three-unit shopping plaza off Austin Bluffs Parkway, felt like it was located in a “beer desert” that could use the pub boost, Kristen said.
A cool building with a peaked roof that bucked the stereotypical plaza vibe, and a back-of-house bearing upgrades made by previous restaurant-minded tenants, sealed the deal.
“It’s not going to be large, but it will be very open,” she said.
A retired elementary school teacher, Kristin joins her husband — award-winning Springs brewer Jeff Lockhart — in the labor of love and longtime shared dream. The couple is currently ushering the project through permitting hurdles, ahead of a planned renovation that will transform the former coffee shop into "our little mom-and-pop brewery."
"Jeff has always wanted to be his own boss and do his own thing in his brewery, and I’ve always thought it would be fun to do it at well ... and here we are," Kristin said in July.

USA: Pabst Brewing Company appoints new CEO
|
US group Pabst Brewing Company has appointed Greig DeBow as its new CEO, effective 11 August, Yahoo! Finance reported on August 5.
DeBow, who previously worked as the executive vice president of national accounts at Pabst from 2015 to 2019, takes over from Paul Chibe, who has been CEO since 2021.
In a statement, Eugene Kashper, Pabst Brewing’s chairman of the board, said: “Greig’s return reflects our confidence in his leadership and our commitment to building a company that is both innovative and deeply rooted in Pabst culture.
“Under Greig’s leadership, Pabst will be focused on harnessing the power of our brands and our people to drive exciting innovation and growth.”
According to the Pabst Blue Ribbon brewer, DeBow steps into the new role having over 25 years of experience in the drinks and consumer-packaged goods industries.
His most recent role was chief commercial and operating officer at protein powders and supplements maker 1st Phorm International.
Prior to 1st Phorm, DeBow was the chief commercial officer at the soft drinks company Zevia.
His career also includes sales leadership roles at companies such as Jack Link’s, Danone, PepsiCo, Red Bull North America, and Standard Beverage Corporation.

USA, OH: Earnest Brew Works announces opening of Oak Openings Wheelhouse location
|
Earnest Brew Works announced the opening of the Oak Openings Wheelhouse location, which they took over from another northwest Ohio brewery that ceased operations last year, WTOL reported on July 31.
In a Facebook post, Earnest Brew Works said its Wheelhouse location would open Friday, Aug. 1 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Its hours for the rest of the weekend include Saturday from noon to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Metroparks Toledo announced in February that Earnest Brew Works would be taking over the Wheelhouse after Heavy Beer Company announced in December of 2024 that it would be permanently ending its operations.
The Wheelhouse opened with Heavy Beer Company at the helm in 2021, with Black Kite supplying coffee.

USA, PA: Something Wicked Brewing Company announces imminent closure
|
A local craft brewery in York County recently announced it will be closing its doors after operating for the past decade, ABC27.com reported on August 5.
The Something Wicked Brewing Company, located at 34 Broadway in Hanover, Pa., is owned and operated by partners Bill & Bridget Seidler, Steve & Cheryl Buenzow, Jim & Cindy Staub, and Scott & Sarah Pivoris.
According to Bill Seidler, the partners first started renovations to their space in Hanover back in 2013 and officially debuted to the public in June 2015.
Earlier today, the Something Wicked Brewing Company announced on Facebook that after ten years of operation, they will be serving its last pints to patrons early next month.
“Over the past decade, we’ve had the honor of watching strangers become friends, and friends become family,” Something Wicked Brewing Company shared. “We’ve shared laughter and tears, stories and songs, first dates and farewells — each moment leaving its mark on our hearts. We had hoped to toast another ten years with you, but as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.”

USA, OH: Tricky Tortoise Brewing permanently closes in Willoughby
|
Tricky Tortoise Brewing Co. (4057 Erie St.), which reactivated the massive Willoughby Brewing space after four years of dormancy, has permanently closed as of last weekend. Bobby Ehasz opened the new brewpub in spring of 2024 after investing considerable amounts of time, money and effort to buff up the 120-year-old railcar repair depot, Clevescene.com reported on August 5.
"As you can imagine, this is pretty tough for my family, we really put our hearts in this one over the last two and a half years," Ehasz said. "We just never found a way to be profitable and I was trying to do it all on my savings after a military career so not much to work with! We never truly had the budget to really make it great!"
After months of work, the former Willoughby Brewing Co. building looked lighter, brighter and more welcoming than it had in ages. Walls were removed, flooring replaced, booths extracted, lighting updated, and fixtures and furniture upgraded.
On the beer side, Caleb Brown, a brewer who worked at Platform/AB and Thirsty Dog, put together a tasty roster of beers that leaned into well balanced classics and originals.

Malaysia: Both Malaysia’s leading brewers seeing early signs of earnings stagnation

The skies are looking rather overcast over Malaysia’s brewers, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd and Heineken Malaysia Bhd, as consumers are buying fewer rounds of drinks amid rising living costs, higher input costs and ongoing subsidy reforms. Once considered market darlings for their resilience and dividends, both companies are seeing early signs of earnings stagnation as tighter discretionary spending takes a toll, The Edge Malaysia reported on July 28.
A lift from tourism due to Malaysia’s role as Asean 2025 chair and the upcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026 is hoped to offer some support, but with foreign visitors historically contributing less than 10% of total beer sales, the potential upside remains limited.
For now, the brewery sector’s appeal lies largely with long-term income investors drawn to its stable 4% to 5% dividend yields, as recovery is likely to be slow, say market experts.
For the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (1QFY2025), Heineken Malaysia registered a net profit of RM122.15 million, largely unchanged from RM122.48 million during the same period last year, while revenue fell 3.24% to RM763.63 million, from RM789.17 million. Earnings were supported by lower interest expenses, effective cost control and improved financial efficiency, following the Chinese New Year festivities.

Nigeria: New Benue Brewery to offer direct employment to at least 400 persons in first two phases of operation

The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Benue Investment and Property Company Limited (BIPC), Dr. Raymond Asemakaha, has disclosed that the newly built Benue Brewery will offer direct employment to at least 400 persons in the first and second phases of its operation, aside from the potential for over 1,000 indirect jobs, The Guardian reported on August 1.
The GMD addressed newsmen while taking delivery of 16 containers of equipment for the brewery at the company’s corporate headquarters in Makurdi.
Dr. Asemakaha, who was in the company of other top-ranking staff, revealed that the brewery, christened the Food Basket Brewery, has a production capacity of 10,000 crates per day and is positioned to tap into the estimated ₦1 billion monthly beer consumption market in Benue State.
He said that the 16 containers the company has taken custody of represent the first batch of 50 containers of equipment expected from the People’s Republic of China.
The GMD also disclosed that the machinery delivered so far was one of the dividends of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s recent visit to China, which was aimed at attracting investment to Benue State.

Luxembourg: Luxembourg pubs may soon be able to expand their beer offer beyond standard pils
|
Luxembourg’s rigid conditions forcing pubs to carry only one brewery’s brands may open a crack in coming months, allowing craft beer fans the option of a cloudy IPA or other artisanal style beyond their standard pils, Luxembourg Times reported on August 4.
The country’s largest brewery, Brasserie Nationale de Luxembourg, is going on record telling bar operators dependent on selling its Bofferding and Battin brews that they can also offer products from smaller Luxembourg craft brewers without violating their exclusivity contracts.
Those contracts are serious business for pub operators in a country where different units of the country’s biggest brewer and runner-up Diekirch not only supply their primary product but also may own the bar’s premises and the alcohol licence needed to operate.
“The customer now has at least a little more choice in a bar,” said Joël Back, co-founder of the Twisted Cat beer brewery. Nearly two dozen bars have started selling its beers since the Confédération des Brasseries et des Brasseurs du Luxembourg (CBBL) sent a statement about an agreement quietly reached two years ago with Brasserie Nationale, allowing the bars controlled through exclusive contracts to sell specialty beers by other CBBL members.

Nigeria: Bature Brewery promoting move to independent beer brands among Nigerian consumers
|
Nigerian beer producer Bature Brewery is doing what it can to dissuade consumers from buying big beer and instead move to independent brands, The Drinks Business reported on August 4.
Bature Brewery has already set a goal to get to 500 locations across the country selling its products within the next year and a half, according to Reuters, which identified how it is already making headway on its target.
Research from Business Research Insights recently identified how, globally, the craft beer sector is forecast to triple to more than US$250 billion by 2033, meaning that independent breweries can still steal market share from bigger beer businesses such as AB InBev, Diageo and Heineken.
Craft brewers are facing myriad challenges in Nigeria at present such as the devaluation of the naira that has seen the price of imported raw materials spike. However, the opportunities for craft expansion are evident since, according to Statista data, Nigeria’s total beer market is still valued at US$7 billion annually.

World: Jack Daniel’s whiskey adds blackberry flavour to its range

Brown-Forman-owned Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey has added a blackberry flavour to its range, The Spirits Business reported on August 5.
Clocking in at 35% ABV, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Blackberry joins Honey, Fire and Apple in the brand’s flavoured whiskey lineup.
It is made with the distillery’s Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey, infused with fresh blackberry flavour.
Master distiller Chris Fletcher said: “The smooth, well-rounded finish of our Tennessee whiskey makes it one of the most versatile expressions to pair with unexpected flavour.

The whiskey is said to have sweet and tangy blackberry notes, and is recommended neat, over ice or mixed into a cocktail.
Jack Daniel’s isn’t the first whiskey producer to play with blackberry, Diageo-owned Crown Royal also put the fruit flavour into practice in April last year.
During a conference call in June for Brown-Forman’s full-year financial results, CEO Lawson Whiting called blackberry a “globally recognised, well-established flavour trend”.
He said: “We’ve been strategic and purposeful with our innovation using consumer insights and trends to give consumers the opportunity to explore and discover within the Jack Daniel’s family.”

Zimbabwe: Ingwebu Breweries commended by government for its packaging plant investment

The Zimbabwe government has commended Ingwebu Breweries for its US$2.5 million investment into its new aco-friendly packaging plant, The Drinks Business reported on August 4.
The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plant, which is located in Bulawayo, has been reported for being fundamental to the region’s re-industrialisation drive and has been lauded by officials as a forward move for the city’s ecosystem and its brewing sector.
Ingwebu Breweries has historically been known for its sorghum beer packaged in traditional containers, however now that the company is expanding into PET packaging, it is expected to “improve product preservation while catering for modern consumer preferences”.
Owned by the Bulawayo Municipal Commercial Undertaking, Ingwebu’s investment is being hailed for being a “state-of-the-art facility” which “marks a strategic shift from traditional returnable containers to modern, recyclable PET bottles, thereby improving efficiency, sustainability and product accessibility”.
Ingwebu Breweries special advisor to the president responsible for monitoring implementation of government programmes, Dr Jorum Gumbo said: “Government support to the private sector is multi-faceted, with a top priority being the creation of a conducive and enabling environment that allows business to not only operate, but to thrive.”
