Brewery news Canada, BC: British Columbia craft brewers calling on government to fix tax system
B.C.’s craft brewers say their industry is in crisis and they are calling on the provincial government to fix a tax system they say is forcing small, local breweries to close while multinational beer giants continue to benefit, Vancouver Sun reported on July 31.

On July 31, the B.C. Craft Brewers Guild launched a grassroots campaign at Main Street Brewing, demanding urgent reforms to keep the taps flowing at more than 220 local breweries employing 6,000 British Columbians.

In B.C., craft breweries pay a markup, essentially a tax, on every litre of beer sold through their Sales Distribution Agreement with the government-run Liquor Distribution Branch, which oversees all alcohol sales and distribution in the province.

Small- to medium-sized breweries pay between 40 and 99 cents per litre on a sliding scale, while larger producers pay a flat rate of C$1.08 per litre.

As breweries grow, they pay higher markups as their annual production rises, but only up to 35 million litres. The B.C. Craft Brewers Guild is proposing to extend that threshold to 50 million litres and raise the top per-litre rate from C$1.08 to C$1.14.

The idea is to have larger producers pay slightly more, allowing smaller breweries to pay less — potentially reducing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Eden Town Brewing Company hoping to open its doors this fall
Eden Town Brewing Company hopes to finish construction in August and open in the fall, The Star Democrat reported on July 29.

A dream from husband and wife combo Matt and Sarah Dahl brought Edens Town Brewing Company to Denton. According to the business website, Matt and Sarah dreamed of building a family business in Denton for many years.

“My wife was born and raised here in Denton. We lived in North Carolina for a while, which is where I’m from, and down there, there’s lots of breweries,” Matt Dahl said. “We saw how much people loved breweries as a place to just come and get a beer or just hang out with friends and family.

“So, we moved back up here, we knew that Denton didn’t have a brewery. The more research we did, we realized really that there’s not that many breweries in the entire region. We saw what breweries did for the towns that did have them. It’s becomes an attraction. So that’s really what we’re hoping this brewery is going to bring people into Denton.”

The brewery plans to serve multiple different types of beer, including India pale ales, pale ales, pilsners, lagers and much more. They will also provide ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, RI: Smug Brewing Company to close for good on August 30
Smug Brewing Company‘s last day pouring pints in Pawtucket will be on Aug. 30.

The Carver Street business announced its decision to close in a social media post on July 29.

“After nearly 7 incredible years, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our doors,” the brewery wrote. “While this is the end of Smug under our ownership, we’re hopeful for what the future holds for this space.”

The business will remain open throughout next month from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, and from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

The brewery encouraged people to use their gift cards and noted that there will be final events and merch deals in the near future. The social media post also urged anyone who may be interested in taking over the business to reach out.

“We can’t thank you enough for the love, laughs, and pints we’ve shared with this amazing community,” Smug Brewing said. “From day one, you’ve shown up with heart — and it’s meant everything.”

Brewery news USA, GA: Braselton Brewing Company closes after a nearly 7 year run
Braselton Brewing Company, a brewpub housed in a historic 1920 cotton gin in downtown Braselton, Georgia, has closed its doors, marking the end of a nearly 7 year run, Beer Street Journal reported on July 31.

Opened in December 2018 by Todd Braselton, the brewery gained local popularity, offering a pet-friendly patio, comfort food, and beers like the Hefe That Killed Elvis and Government Shutdown. Inspired by the Pacific Northwest’s brewpub culture, the venue blended industrial-chic looks with a relaxed social setting.

According to an Instagram post, Brazelton cites rising food costs since the pandemic, and a 200% increase in insurance costs.

Recently, Georgia has lost a few other breweries, including Jekyll Brewing, Elsewhere Brewing, Best End Brewing, Torched Hop Brewing, Red Hare Brewing and Eventide Brewing.

Whisky news India: Big whiskey tariff cut to bring little cheer for Indians due to complex tax regime
At first glance, halving import tariffs on Scotch to 75% under the India-UK trade deal should bring the biggest cheer to India's whisky lovers. But there is little to celebrate once you look closely at India's complex tax regime, Reuters reported on July 30.

In the world's most populous nation, each of the 28 states and eight federally-controlled territories regulate alcohol independently and impose heavy local taxes that contribute richly to the exchequer.

That means the price consumers pay for their drink in India includes state excise tax, handling charges, a social welfare fee, and distribution and retailer margins, and once they are taken into account the industry estimates final prices of imported Scotch will come down by less than 10%, four liquor industry executives said. Some fear states may even increase taxes, cancelling out the reduction from the trade deal.

One executive at a foreign company said the tariff cut "won't be a gamechanger." Another said the share of customs duty as a percentage of the total product price was less than 25% in most states. Both declined to be named as they were not authorised to speak to the media.

Naveen Malpani, consumer and retail industry leader at consultants Grant Thornton Bharat, ...More info on site

Whisky news Ireland: Irish whiskey won't have 'full clarity' on market until 2026 – IFA
The Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) has warned that Irish whiskey producers and grain farmers will not have “full clarity” about the market until 2026, The Farmers Journal reported on July 31.

The warning comes after an IFA delegation, led by grain vice-chair John Murphy, held a discussion with representatives from Drinks Ireland and the Irish Whiskey Association (IWA).

At the meeting, the market outlook for the whiskey sector was outlined, which the IFA described as remaining exceptionally challenging due a combination of economic uncertainty arising from US tariffs and inflation/cost of living pressures.

Murphy said a boom in whiskey sales to the US so far had resulted in a significant increase in demand for malting and adjunct barleys at farm level. However, this was in jeopardy.

“It could be well into 2026 before full clarity exists within the market and this news will be concerning for barley producers,” he said.

The IWA said work is ongoing to ensure an increase of sales of Irish whiskey in other emerging markets such as India and South Africa, but barriers to trade are also present in these regions and pivoting sales would not happen overnight.

In addition, the IFA stressed the importance of the Irish whiskey sector using ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Storm brewing in Kenya over latest proposal to control sale and consumption of alcohol
A storm is brewing in Kenya over the latest proposals to control the sale and consumption of alcohol, including raising the minimum drinking age from 18 to 21, Yahoo reported.

The sweeping proposed rules, unveiled on July 30, include a ban on purchasing alcohol in supermarkets, restaurants and on public transport. The online sale and home delivery of alcoholic drinks as well as celebrity endorsements will also be outlawed.

The authorities have defended the planned measures as necessary to address substance abuse especially among the youth.

But many Kenyans, including those in the alcohol industry, have criticised the proposals as misguided and potentially destructive to the economy.

If they are approved then alcohol will only be available in pubs and bars as well as shops specifically licenced for its sale.

The plans were unveiled by National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) in what was seen as one of the most aggressive anti-alcohol policies the country has seen.

The agency estimated in 2022 that one in every 20 Kenyans aged between 15 and 65 were addicted to alcohol.

Following the backlash against its proposals, Nacada sent out a statement clarifying that its draft policy was a "road map, not an enforcement issue", adding ...More info on site

Brewery news Latvia: New law curbs sale of alcohol and advertising of prices and promotions
Latvia, which has some of the heaviest drinkers in the EU, has introduced new laws curbing the sale of alcohol and the advertising of prices and promotions, TVP World reported on July 31.

From August 1, alcohol will only be available for sale from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

In addition to reduced retail hours, new laws have targeted online purchases to combat impulse buying. Alcohol bought on the internet can only be delivered at least six hours after its purchase.

There will also be a ban on advertising alcohol prices and discounts in the media, including online and in emails, as well as at physical points of sale, state broadcaster LSM reported.

In addition, the sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption in gambling venues will also be prohibited, as will sales promotions offering multiple units of alcohol at once for a lower price, and discounts as part of customer loyalty programs.

Licensed retailers will also have to display a prominent sign that informs customers of alcohol-related health risks.

The new rules are in response to high alcohol consumption in Latvia. According to a parliamentary ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: HiteJinro’s Terra beer brand sells more than 5.5 bln bottles since launch in March 2019
HiteJinro said cumulative sales of its Terra beer brand exceeded 5.5 billion bottles (as of June 30th), SportsChosun reported on July 30.

This is the rate at which 28 bottles were sold (330 ml) per second, and a total of 1.67 billion liters were sold, enough to fill about 729 Olympic-standard swimming pools. At the same time, each adult in Korea (based on 43.44 million people aged 20 or older) drank about 127 bottles.

Terra has surpassed 1 million box sales in 39 days since its launch in March 2019, setting a sales record at the fastest pace among beer brands, and has now established itself as a leading beer brand in Korea. The performance of 'Terra Light', which was launched in July, is also driving sales growth.

Terra Light was completed using Terra's "100% Australian-made clean malt" based on the extraction of the extraction of malt juice that took four times longer than regular beer to realize the beer-like flavor that Light beer is difficult to have. The package differentiated color and label based on terra whirlwinds completed at an optimized rate. According to the results of a domestic consumer survey, the lightest-looking bottle color, 'transparent bottle' was used, and the label ...More info on site
