USA, IL: Good News Brewing Company to officially open in Alton on July 3
|
The Post Commons building at 300 Alby St., Alton will soon be regularly offering more than coffee, pastries, and good vibes, The Telegraph reported on June 20.
The “living room of Alton” will add Good News Brewing Company, which officially opens July 3, with wood-fired pizza and craft beer.
“The building is really a draw for downtown,” Hugh Halter, founder of Post Commons and The Lantern Network, said. “We wanted some concept to keep this building open all day and all night.”
Good News Brewing Company (GNBC), a brewpub franchise founded in 2014 that now has one food truck and five total locations. The business will offer wood-fired sourdough pizza, eight taps of craft beer and sours, and exist as a gathering place to "come together and share Good News over a pint,” according to the company's website.
The business will be located in the Post Commons space and operated by Lantern Network, an Alton-based non-profit geared toward incubating businesses.
“This space is more about incubating new works that can help the city in any function,” he said.

Canada, ON: Saulter Street Brewery confirms it will be closing for good soon
|
Beer drinkers in Toronto will have one less brewery option at their disposal at the end of the month, Men’s Journal reported on June 18.
Saulter Street Brewery has been in business for eight years, but rumors of its pending closure first popped up online four months ago. On June 18, the brewery confirmed it will be closing its doors soon, with June 30 as its final day of operation.
"We opened this brewery with the simple hope of making great beer and sharing it with our community," Saulter Street said in a social media post. "What we didn't expect was how much heart would grow within these walls. It began with beer, but over time, this space became something deeper, a gathering place."
Known for its local beer offerings, including the Riverside Copper Pilsner and Gold Lager, Paradox IPA and festive Krampus series, Saulter Street built up a following nearly a decade of brewing suds.
In its farewell post, the brewery team fondly remembered hosting weddings, engagements and birthdays, as well as "quiet Tuesday afternoons and spontaneous Sunday catch-ups."

Australia: Barley exports total 678,382 tonnes in April with China main destination
|
Australia exported 678,382 tonnes of barley and 463,220t of sorghum in April, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Feed accounted for 576,692t of the barley total, and was down 8 percent from the March figure of 623,805t.
China on 330,254t was the destination for 57pc of April-shipped feed barley, with Japan on 116,535t and Saudia Arabia on 66,000t the second and third-biggest markets respectively.
April-shipped malting barley totalled 101,690t, down 51pc from the March figure, and had only three destinations: China on 65,359t, Mexico on 33,000t, and Vietnam on 3331t.
Sorghum exports rose 146pc from the March total of 188,285t to reflect peak new-crop availability.
On 445,133t, China accounted for 96pc of sorghum shipped in April, with Kenya on 14,003t the second-biggest market, and The Philippines on 2172t the third.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said less availability and a momentary slump in demand from China have made May the lowest shipment month since December.
“The combination of good comparative prices to corn and other feedgrains, a lack of Chinese buying, and limited Black Sea availability saw Middle Eastern buyers stand up for around 100,000t, or 15pc of exports, which is relatively high,” Mr Roache said.

UK: Craft beer prices rocket since the start of the year

UK’s craft beer prices have rocketed since the start of the year — giving drinkers a major hangover.
Prices have jumped by up to 12.5 per cent since January, The Morning Advertiser Pint Price Survey has revealed.
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) said many landlords are having to charge more just to stay open in the face of rising raw material costs and tax rises.
The survey said the biggest price rise was for BrewDog Punk IPA, which was £5.64 a pint in January but is now £6.34.
Camden Hells has also climbed to £6.34, up 10.8 per cent from £5.72.
Others have seen more modest increases, just 1.7 per cent for Camden Pale Ale, which has gone from £5.59 to £5.69.
The average price of a draught pint across all types has crept up to £5.17, compared with £5.08 six months ago.
CAMRA chairman Ash Corbett-Collins said: “It’s incredibly frustrating for consumers to see the price of a pint rise yet again.

The Democratic Republic of Congo: Heineken loses operational control and withdraws staff from conflict areas

Heineken has lost operational control and withdrawn its staff from its facilities in conflict-affected areas of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the Dutch brewer said on June 20, Reuters reported.
The beverages giant said in March that its operations in three eastern cities would remain suspended until it was safe to reopen, after some of its breweries were hit and its depots raided during fighting between the army and rebels.
But on June 20, the beer maker said the situation had deteriorated further, and that armed personnel had taken control of its facilities in Bukavu and Goma - eastern Congo's two biggest cities, now under rebel control - and nearby areas.
"The conditions required to operate responsibly and safely are no longer present and as of 12th June 2025, we have lost operational control," it said in a statement.
Heineken's Congo unit, Bralima, still operates in other parts of the country not affected by the conflict, the company said, adding that it would continue assessing the evolving situation.
The group owns four breweries in Congo, producing Heineken beer as well as other popular brands like Primus and Amstel. The Bukavu facilities employed around 1,000 people both directly and indirectly, it had said previously.

UK: Almost half of UK adults now regularly enjoy alcohol-free beers, study finds
|
Almost half (48%) of UK adults now regularly enjoy alcohol-free beers, wines and spirits, according to Club Soda’s ‘Drinks for Everyone’ 2025 report, Talking Retail said on June 19.
This marks a fundamental shift in a nation once defined by its drinking culture.
Key findings from the report include:
• More people are enjoying alcohol-free drinks than ever before with 48% of UK adults now drinking them.
• 37% of 18-34-year-olds drink alcohol-free drinks weekly – four times the rate for over-55s (9%).
• Over half (56%) want to see alcohol-free drinks more widely promoted as alternatives to alcohol.
Ten years ago, Club Soda identified that a lack of good alcohol-free drinks was getting in the way of consumers making healthier choices.
Fast forward to today, and Ocado stocks 261 adult alcohol-free drink options while more than 1,400 British breweries are producing alcohol-free beer suggesting that it is no longer a fringe trend but a significant cultural shift for the traditionally alcocentric UK.
Out of the 48% of UK adults now choosing alcohol-free drinks, only 9% of them say they are completely alcohol-free which indicates that the shift is driven by moderation and thanks to better tasting options, alcohol-free choices are now a regular part of people’s drinking habits.

The Netherlands & India: Heineken to set up its first Global Capability in Hyderabad

Netherlands-based brewer Heineken NV is the latest to join the list of global giants to say cheers to Hyderabad. One of the world's largest beer makers, Heineken plans to invest Rs 2,500 crore to Rs 3,000 crore over the next few years in setting up its first Global Capability Center (GCC) in the Asia Pacific region in Hyderabad, Times of India reported on June 18.
The Euro 36 billion Dutch giant is all set to establish its GCC, Heineken Business Services India, in Hyderabad by the end of 2025 with plans to hire around 2,500-3,000 techies over the next five years, sources aware of the development told TOI.
The Hyderabad GCC will focus on technology development, including emerging technologies such as AI, and shared business services such as finance and HR, sources said.
Confirming the investment figures, Heineken told TOI that it is scouting for space in Hyderabad and will be hiring for the "usual GCC roles".
"Heineken Business Services India is an addition to our existing global network of connected hubs that will provide essential services and capabilities to operating companies within Heineken," the company had said in a brief global announcement recently.
