USA, WI: Lombardi Brewing Company files plan to take over former City Lights space in Milwaukee
|
A brewery with a familiar name in Wisconsin is relaunching its brand and opening its first brick-and-mortar location in the former City Lights Brewing Company space in Milwaukee's Menomonee Valley, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on May 27.
Lombardi Brewing Company has filed an occupancy permit to take over the taproom at 2210 W. Mount Vernon Ave.
City Lights had been in the space in the historic Milwaukee Gas Light Co. building from 2017 until it closed on Jan. 4, 2025.
Lombardi Brewing has been around for a few years, producing beers like Lombardi Golden Lager and Longarm Amber through contract brewing. It had distributed the beer to bars and restaurants around Stevens Point and Wausau in 2021 and 2022, according to its Facebook page.
In April 2025, after more than three years of silence in its Facebook page, the brewery began hinting at opening a Milwaukee taproom.
Amanda Gethers, who applied for the occupancy permit, declined to comment on the brewery's plans when contacted May 27.
City Lights Brewing was known for beers such as its Coconut Porter and Mexican Lager. Its Menomonee Valley taproom was popular for its large patio along the Menomonee River.

USA, TN: Hangar 13 Distillery coming to Ashland City on July 4
|
A family operated boutique distillery with a military theme is planned for the Ashland City building last home to craft beer business Marrowbone Creek Brewing Co, Nashville Post reported on May 23.
Mike Hangge will join six relatives to own and operate Hangar 13 Distillery from the vintage bow-truss building, which was, prior to the brewery, home to a small auto dealership. The address is 240 S. Main St.
Hangar 13 Distillery will open July 4, Hangge said.

USA, WI: Bloomer Brewing to close all operations for good on May 31
|
Bloomer Brewing Co. says that on May 31, 2025, they will be closing their doors for the last time, closing down all brewery and taproom operations, WEAU reported on May 23.
In their announcement of the closure via their Facebook page, Bloomer Brewing Co. cites rising costs for small market brewers, and persistent decreasing traffic to their taprooms.

USA, CT: Thimble Island Brewing Company closes its doors in Branford
|
Beer lovers in Branford came together one final time at Thimble Island Brewing Company.
The business announced earlier this month it would be closing its doors on Saturday, May 24.
Many customers said they were heartbroken to hear the news.
“For us, it was pretty devastating to say the least to know this place was closing,” said Eddy Delahoz, from West Haven.
Joshua Gabriel, from Branford, said, “It’s going to be very sad because it’s been a staple place that we have been coming for years.”
After nearly 15 years of business, the owner made the difficult decision to shut down.
“A lot of great people and that’s the thing I’m going to miss the most,” said Justin Gargano, owner of Thimble Island Brewing Co.
Gargano’s love for beer started when he was brewing his own at home.
He wanted to share that passion with others, so he opened up his own brewery.
“It’s heartbreaking. One of the biggest things about having something like this. It is about community and one thing I’ve always tried to foster is a typical pub atmosphere. Very family friendly. Everyone’s invited,” Gargano added.
That family atmosphere was what brought brothers Eddy and Renzo to the brewery several years ago.
“This is where we have our

USA, NJ: Brix City Brewing shutting down its Little Ferry location
|
Bergen County’s first-ever brewery, Brix City Brewing, will close its Little Ferry location on May 29, marking the end of a run that lasted over a decade. However, it is not the end of Brix City, northjersey.com reported on May 27.
The owners, longtime friends and Hasbrouck Heights natives Joe Delcalzo and Pete Reuther, started the business because of their love for beer and passion for brewing. They decided to chase their dreams — from brewing in their backyards to opening a business that welcomes everyone to mingle and enjoy their unique blends of IPAs, Belgians, sours, lagers, seasonals and stouts.
They could not be reached for comment about the reason for the closing.
The duo are still looking for a new location. They announced on their social media accounts that they have not secured a new taproom yet but are actively searching to find the right space.
“We’re incredibly grateful for your continued support through this time of transition," the Brix City Brewing owners posted. "While this is the end of one chapter, it’s just the beginning of the next — and we can’t wait to share what comes next with all of you.”
Brix City was a pioneer in the microbrewing industry in

South 40 Brewing Company is located at 110 Newfield Ave, Suite 2, and has been open since October 2020. They've distributed beer to liquor stores and bars across the state, including along Long Beach Island, according to the company.

UK: 43 breweries become insolvent in the year to February 2025
|
A total of 43 UK breweries became insolvent in the year to the end of February 2025, according to accountancy group UHY Hacker Young, The Caterer reported on May 27.
Names including Fourpure, Magic Rock Brewery (both brands were subsequently acquired by Keystone Brewing Group), By the Horns, Burton Town Brewery and Wild Weather Ales were amongst those in financial difficulty.
Fourpure and Magic Rock were later acquired by Keystone Brewing Group.
Many of the closures were due to the mounting cost pressures facing small, independent craft beer producers, the report said.
Brian Johnson, partner at UHY Hacker Young, said: “The craft beer boom was one of the most exciting recent trends in food and drink. Unfortunately, it is a sector that attracted too many entrepreneurs who struggled to break even.
“The recent closures suggest the UK’s craft beer market cannot continue to support all the independent producers that have sprung up in the last 15 years.”
Johnson said weak consumer spending meant many breweries would have to adapt to leaner times and small brewers were caught in a “perfect storm” of soaring production costs while household spending remained tight.
Recent increases in the National Minimum Wage and employer National Insurance contributions have also pushed up

China: Demand for Heineken in China growing thanks to partnership with China Resources Beer
|
Western consumer brands in China have long been coming to terms with the prospect of lower growth in the world’s second-largest economy. But demand for Heineken’s beers tells a different story, Financial Times reported on May 24.
In 2023, sales volumes for the Dutch lager maker’s various brands, including Amstel, rose more than 50 per cent. Last year, as the overall mainland China beer market shrank, its volumes increased nearly 20 per cent to just under 700mn litres — almost enough to serve a pint to everyone in the country.
Heineken’s growth comes after a deal agreed in 2018 with China Resources Beer, China’s biggest brewer, which gave the state-owned group rights to the brand on the mainland while Heineken took a stake in China Resources Beer and gets royalties from the deal.
The approach points to pockets of opportunity for well-known foreign names in China’s fast-evolving consumer sector, even if the wider markets in which they operate are saturated.
“This is a very healthy transactional relationship,” said Tristan van Strien, global investor relations director at Heineken of the relationship with China Resources Beer. “They need us and we need them.”
Heineken’s growth rates “have undoubtedly outperformed”, said Euan McLeish, an analyst at Bernstein. “None

Georgia: Beer consumption on the rise with imports getting more interest from the population
|
The key sales markets, FMCG and the HORECA industry, are expected to maintain sustainable growth in Georgia in the coming years, Commersant Georgia reported on May 23.
While domestically produced beer has remained mostly unchanged in 2024 in absolute terms, price changes have significantly boosted the market revenue, a TBC Capital report is quoted as saying.
Domestic beer consumption has been on a rise for the last several years, reaching a new high in 2024. Boosted demand on imported beer is also visible in the annual numbers.
The increased domestic demand, especially for imported beer, is translated into significant growth of imports and reduced exports.
With import levels remaining mostly unchanged throughout the last several years, domestic demand for non-alcoholic beverages is mostly met with local production.
Export of non-alcoholic beverages has significantly increased in the past five years, exhibiting a 30% 4-year CAGR and reaching 150 mln litres in 2024.

Germany: Brewery workers strike in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region
|
Employees are walking out at several breweries in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region this week in a spat over wages, Yahoo!Finance reported on May 27.
Workers took part in a "warning strike" on May 26 at Krombacher's brewery in Kreuztal.
Around 150 Krombacher employees downed their tools for a two-hour period, Isabell Mura, deputy regional chairwoman of the North Rhine-Westphalia branch of the Food, Beverages and Catering Union (NGG), said.
A "warning strike" acts as a "warning signal" to employers, Mura said.
Demonstrations were also taking place on May 27 at the Veltins brewery in Meschede, Hochsauerland, at the Dortmunder Actien Brauerei (DAB) in Dortmund, and Diebels brewery in Issum.
"A lot of trouble has been brewing in North Rhine-Westphalia's breweries – especially at Krombacher in Kreuztal. Employers are putting the brakes on wages. This is provoking a 'knot in the beer pipeline' – namely, a whole series of warning strikes in many North Rhine-Westphalian breweries," Mura said in a statement.
She added that the move across these German breweries could hit production.
"Summer thirst could also suffer: Reduced beer production would also make barbecues and summer festivals drier," Mura said.
The NGG union has called on brewery employers to give all staff a 6.6% wage increase this year.

Asia Pacific: AB InBev cuts 16% of Budweiser workforce in Asia Pacific last year
|
AB InBev has confirmed that it cut 16% of its Budweiser workforce within the Asia-Pacific region last year, The Drinks Business reported on May 27.
According to company’s 2024 annual report, the APAC arm of the business employed just over 21,000 people by year-end, a figure that was down from approximately 25,000 in 2023.
The findings show a reduction of nearly 4,000 employees, or roughly 16% of those working for Budweiser APAC, according to reports via Vino Joy.
Despite market rumours suggesting that Budweiser APAC had planned to slash operating costs by 15% in 2025, a move that would include thousands of layoffs, the company denied such actions and instead cited a response from headquarters stating that the claims of large-scale job cuts were not accurate, and that it remains committed to long-term investment in China.
Irrespective of these recent job cuts, Budweiser APAC still bills itself as the largest beer company in the region. Plus, in China the beer company manages both local and international brands including: Harbin, Budweiser, Hoegaarden, and Corona, with all distribution and channel operations said to be handled by Budweiser APAC.
Despite denying plans for further layoffs in 2025, it is clear that the 2024 staff reductions have already taken
