Brewery news USA: US craft brewers adapting to new normal, Brewers Association says
The Brewers Association, the trade association representing America’s small and independent breweries, delivered its annual state of the industry address on April 30.

The address was given by Bart Watson, in his new role as the Association’s president and CEO, a position he has held since January 6, 2025, though he has given the address in recent years as the Association’s chief economist. Watson’s strong economic background and data-driven analysis is annually one of the highlights for attendees of the Craft Brewers Conference, being held this year in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In his address, Watson reiterated the Association’s previous report that craft breweries in America produced 4.0% less beer in 2024 than in 2023 and for the first time since 2005, the Association recorded more breweries closing—524—than opening—430.

Despite this, 43% of breweries increased production volume in 2024, indicating that difficulties were not universal and that it is possible to thrive in the current climate. Watson noted that breweries making non-beer beverages—hard seltzer, ready-to-drink cocktails, flavored malt beverages or cider, for example—were more likely to have shown growth.

The hardest hit segment of the industry was the smallest breweries—those brewing less than 500 barrels per year—which collectively produced 9.5% less beer in 2024 than ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Boston Beer expects $20-30 mln extra costs due to tariffs this year
Boston Beer Co., the maker of Samuel Adams beer, Truly hard seltzer and other drinks, says the extra costs due to tariffs this year will be between $20 million and $30 million, MassLive reported on April 29.

The big driver of those costs is the aluminum Boston Beer Co. uses for its cans.

“In terms of tariffs, we’re still identifying what is actual policy and what is posturing and what looks like a long negotiation,” said CEO Michael Spillane on an earnings call last week. “So we’re being very thoughtful and very focused internally on, if we need solutions, we have them ready. We’re assessing the marketplace to see what kind of pricing tolerance there would be and we’re constantly looking at findings internally.”

The challenges with potential tariffs come on top of negative market trends in beer and other alcoholic beverages. Hard seltzer sales were down 5% for the first quarter of 2025, and beer sales were weaker than expected.

Chairman Jim Koch called today’s slow decline in beer consumption “the new normal” amid consumers’ health considerations and competing markets such as cannabis.

Boston Beer Co. has adjusted to the market challenges in part by turning to drinks with higher alcohol content. That includes ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Del Cielo Brewing Co. expanding to Livermore
Livermore will soon see a new face in the city’s craft beer scene, as Martinez-based brewery and taproom Del Cielo Brewing Co. expects to open its doors to the public this summer, Livermore Vine reported on April 30.

Known for its Latin-inspired brews, food and live entertainment, Del Cielo took the place of Shadow Puppet Brewing Co. earlier this year after it shuttered due to strained operations.

Del Cielo’s expansion marks a much-needed increase in capacity for the growing company, said owners Luis Castro and Cielomar Cuevas.

Joining the two is Shadow Puppet’s former lead brewer, Craig Danielson.

“These two met each other such a long time ago,” Cuevas said of Castro and Danielson. “Now they’re working together to bring this second chapter of this space to life.”

Beginning about 10 years ago, Castro and Cuevas kicked off their home brewing hobby. Castro said he was enamored by the brewing process and quickly joined a Walnut Creek-based home brewing club.

“It was just for funsies,” Cuevas said.

But as their house parties — with home brew as the beverage of choice — grew from five to 20 and later 30 friends, the business concept clicked.

The two went on to open Del Cielo Brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Highland Brewing Company to leave its downtown Asheville location
Highland Brewing Company is set to leave its downtown Asheville location at the S&W Market, where it has served craft brews for nearly four years, WLOS reported on April 29.

The brewery's last day at the market will be Friday, May 2, according to a release from the company.

In a new development, Chris Faber, known for his work at The Times Bar and Coffee Shop, will introduce a "new beverage concept" in this space at the S&W Market, the release said.

"This transition opens the door to something fresh, dynamic and deeply rooted in Asheville's creative spirit," Faber said in the release. "Our team is passionate about curating experiences that celebrate the city's exceptional culinary and beverage scene, and we're excited to share what's coming next."

The new beverage concept, featuring Spencer Shultz and Becky Bronson as co-bar managers, is expected to open in the summer of 2025.

"It's fortuitous for S&W in that Chris Faber can expand the reach of his talent, and for Highland, where we will focus fully on our destination brewery," said Leah Wong Ashburn, president and CEO of Highland Brewing.

The S&W Market will continue to operate seven days a week, offering a variety of local food vendors.

Brewery news USA, IN: The Vincennes Brewing Company to shut down for good on May 10th
A longtime downtown Vincennes business is closing its doors. The Vincennes Brewing Company has announced it will shut down after service on Saturday, May 10th, Vincennes PBS reported.

The brewery has been in business for seven and a half years and weathered major challenges, including ownership changes, the pandemic, and even a cooler malfunction that froze all their kegs.

In a statement, the staff said they’re proud of the memories made and the friendships formed. Their final night will feature live music from Buck Rogers Clark starting at 8 p.m.

They’re inviting the community to stop by one last time to raise a glass and say goodbye.

Brewery news USA, CA: Device Brewing Co. closes its three taprooms, including original brewery in southeast Sacramento
Device Brewing Co. will close its three taprooms after Sunday, April 27, including its original brewery and taproom in southeast Sacramento, The Sacramento Bee reported.

The shuttering of its three locations follows a lawsuit filed in Sacramento Superior Court earlier this month alleging that Device has not paid rent or maintenance costs for its 8166 14th Ave. location for several months. The landlord claims that Device owes more than $23,000 in rental obligations, the lawsuit shows.

Device employs at least 20 people across its three locations, according to the California Employment Development Department. Workers were told about the closure in a message from the owner’s wife Thursday, according to a Device employee.

Each location will stay open for regular operating hours through Sunday evening. The Pocket location at 7485 Rush River Drive, Suite 650, had its kitchen closed Saturday morning due to a lack of employees but the location’s manager said the taproom should remain open the rest of the weekend.

Brewery owner Ken Anthony has not returned The Sacramento Bee’s requests for comment about the closure.

Luke Malone, who has worked at the Ice Blocks location at 1610 R St., Suite 145, since October 2024, said that he is sad ...More info on site

Brewery news Georgia: Beer market expected to maintain robust growth in 2025
Beer consumption in Georgia is increasing year by year. The market has grown by about 15% over the past three years, Commerstant.ge reported on April 28.

The highest growth in demand for the beverage was recorded in 2022. Corporate Affairs Director of Efes Georgia attributes this to the influx of migrants into Georgia. Nikoloz Khundzakishvili believes that the market will maintain robust growth in 2025 to 2%.

"The beer market grew by about 1-1.5% last year compared to the previous year," he said.

“Similar growth was seen in 2023. In 2022, we experienced extraordinary growth by about 11% that was caused by migration, afterwards in 2023 and 2024, the so-called natural growth was recorded. When the economy grows, the demand for these types of goods also increases.”

“Over the past three years, beer consumption has grown by about 15% that is a very good indicator given the current economic situation, purchasing power and the situation in the country as a whole. In our view, demand is expected to increase by 1.5-2% in 2025. This is a normal process when economy grows," Nikoloz Khundzakishvili points out.

Brewery news USA, TX: Thirsty Planet Brewery getting ready to open in downtown San Marcos
Thirsty Planet Brewery will open in the former Aqua Brew spot in downtown San Marcos, Community Impact reported on April 28.

Founded by Brian Smittle in 2010, the brewery was previously located on South Congress Avenue in Austin. That location closed shortly after it opened in 2023. Since then, Thirsty Planet has been brewing some of its beers at Austin Beerworks and offering them in local bars and grocery stores.

Thirsty Planet’s beers include Thirsty Goat Amber, Buckethead IPA, Yellow Armadillo Wheat and Fat Bat Hazy IPA. The new location will be the brewery’s production facility and tasting room.

The space will also feature an outdoor beer garden, kid- and pet-friendly areas, TVs and speakers. They are also looking to partner with local restaurants for food options.

Brewery news Romania: Craft brewer Ground Zero reports 25% increase in first-quarter sales
Ground Zero, one of Romania’s leading craft breweries, reported a 25% year-on-year increase in sales for the first quarter of 2025, marking its tenth anniversary against a backdrop of market stabilization and rising interest in premium products, Business Review reported on April 29.

Founded in 2015, Ground Zero introduced the India Pale Ale (IPA) style to Romania, helping to spur the growth of Romania’s craft beer market by attracting a community of enthusiasts and supporting the emergence of other independent brands.

“In 2015, Ground Zero brewed the first IPA made in Romania, paving the way for authentic craft beer in the local market. Since then, we have remained committed to brewing without enzymes, additives, or industrial shortcuts, adhering strictly to natural fermentation processes using real malt, real hops, pure water, and yeast,” said Cosmin Timbuș, shareholder at Ground Zero.

Following a decline in Romania’s total beer market in 2023, 2024 has seen volume stabilization while the craft segment continued to gain ground among urban consumers. Although craft beer still accounts for a modest share of overall consumption, the trend toward refined tastes and premium products points to the segment’s growth potential.

Amid these trends, Ground Zero has focused on expanding its portfolio carefully, responding ...More info on site
