USA: Taxable beer removals shipments down in the first two months of this year
|
United States’ Beer Institute on April 3 published an unofficial estimate of taxable removals shipments by beer brewers for February 2025.
February 2025 estimate of 10,300,000 barrels represents a decrease of 14.9% compared to February 2024 removals of 12,104,263.
Shipments in the first two months of this year are down 11.9% to 20,850,000 barrels.
The March 2025 taxable removals estimate is scheduled to be released on May 8, 2025.

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria extends majority shareholder’s mandatory takeover offer
|
Guinness Nigeria Plc has extended its majority shareholder’s mandatory takeover offer (MTO) to April 18, according to a regulatory filing on April 4. This suggests the volume of shares taken up from the total offer has not met the company’s target, with a thin gap between the offer and the market price, MarketForces Africa reported on April 5.
Last month, N Seven, the new single largest shareholder of Guinness Nigeria, offered to take out minority interest at N81.60. The move followed its successful acquisition of a 58.02% controlling stake in Guinness Nigeria Plc. The company share price has been flattish at N80 in the equities market.
Due to a bearish display, the Nigerian Exchange’s All-Share Index dipped 15 basis points week on week to close at 105,511.89 points. N-Seven seeks to acquire 481,362,887 ordinary shares of Guinness via the open market offer made at N81.60, but the offer on the table has been extended to April 18.
According to the terms of the offer, shareholders can opt to tender all or part of their shares by submitting an Acceptance Form during the offer window, which runs from 14 March 2025 to 4 April 2025.

France: Axéréal and the Domaine national de Chambord inaugurate a new craft brewery
|
On April 1, 2025, the Brasserie de Chambord—a craft brewery focused on producing beers from locally grown, low-carbon barley and French hops—was officially inaugurated in the presence of local and national stakeholders, Inside Beer reported.
Located near the historic Château de Chambord, the new facility is the result of a partnership between the agricultural cooperative Axéréal and the Domaine national de Chambord.
The idea for the brewery originated with Axéréal, one of France’s largest agricultural cooperatives, which has long championed the barley-malt-beer value chain. With over 11,000 member farmers, Axéréal is committed to sustainable, regenerative, and lowcarbon agriculture. The group plays a key role not only in grain collection but also in malting, holding a majority stake in Boortmalt, the world’s second-largest malt producer with operations across five continents. The malt used in the Brasserie de Chambord is produced locally at Boortmalt’s site in Issoudun, Centre-Val de Loire—one of the most energy-efficient malthouses in Europe, equipped with a large solar thermal power plant and a unique water recycling system.

The Netherlands: Dutch brewers rally against US beer import duties, seek resolution
|
The Nederlandse Brouwers has expressed significant concern over the recent announcement by the United States to impose a 20 per cent import duty on beer imports from the European Union, Caliber.az reported on April 5.
This new tariff, which includes beer in Annex 1 of the list of products subject to a 25 per cent duty on aluminum, is seen as detrimental to both sides, according to Meint Waterlander, director of the Nederlandse Brouwers.
Waterlander stressed that the introduction of these tariffs would create a "lose-lose" situation both socially and economically, particularly for Dutch brewers. He pointed out that the US is a key export market for the Netherlands, with 40 per cent of the country’s total beer exports being shipped across the Atlantic. As a result, the added duties could have significant ripple effects across various sectors, including farming, brewing, logistics, catering, and port services, all of which contribute to the Dutch beer export industry.

The Czech Republic: Czech beer culture eyes UNESCO listing
|
Going to a pub several times a week to meet friends, media consultant Gabriela Galetkova hopes Czech beer culture - which is taking a hit as bar visits dip - will be internationally recognised, Daily Journal reported on April 5.
"I won't buy beer to drink at home. For me, Czech beer culture is about meeting people in a typical Czech pub," the 54-year-old told AFP in a Prague bar serving the trademark Pilsner lager with thick froth.
While many beer drinkers in the central European country are turning away from pubs, often to save money, Czech beer professionals are seeking listing by UNESCO among the world's cultural heritage as a possible boost.
Czech beer culture deserves a place on the UN agency's intangible heritage lists owing to its "global reputation", said Tomas Slunecko, head of the Czech Beer and Malt Association.
"Wherever you go in Europe or the world, people ask you about Czech beer," the former diplomat told AFP.
If Czech beer culture gets listed by UNESCO, it will be the world's second after Belgium, listed in 2016 - which according to Slunecko "really boosted the reputation of local beer making, not only inside Belgium but also abroad".
