USA: Suntory aims to sell local to avoid US tariffs
|
Japanese drinks giant Suntory will try to produce and sell locally to dodge the U.S. tariff threat, says president Nobuhiro Torii, President, Suntory, Yahoo!Finance reported on April 3.
“The biggest challenge we may have is spirits business. But almost 70% of our business is either in Japan or in the United States. And we have a strong bourbon brand in the United States. We have very strong Japanese brands in Japan. So we will produce and try to sell locally. That's the key strategy with the tariffs.”
“We always have challenges of how to control the supply and how to build up our liquid (business). But for the time being, I believe the trend itself continues to grow, so of course we carefully watch the (consumer) trend but at the same time we have to create the demand, so we should focus on brand investment so that our brand condition stays healthy.”
Nobuhiro Torii, great-grandson of the company's founder, takes the reins at a raucous time, with new U.S. tariffs poised to affect everything from Toyota's sedans to Suntory's aged whiskies.
The company's soft drinks are mainly produced in their destination markets, but spirits such as tequila must be made in specific locations and

Australia: Lion sells Eumundi Brewing, one of Australia’s original craft breweries
|
Eight years after reviving Eumundi Brewing, one of Australia’s original craft breweries, Lion has sold it to the Comiskey Group, Drinks Digest reported on April 3.
The Cominskey Group is a family-owned company based in Brisbane’s north. It was named Australia’s Best Hotel Group Operator 2023 at the AHA National Awards for Excellence.
Eumundi Lager was first brewed in 1988, after brewing engineer and developer John Lynch led a group to purchase the town’s Imperial Hotel and install a brewery on site.
However, the microbrewery ceased operations soon after and production was outsourced to Yatala Brewery, with brewing eventually ceasing in 2004.
In 2016, Lion revived the much-loved Eumundi craft beer, returning production to its original home at The Imperial Hotel. By August 2017, the new Eumundi Brewery officially reopened, launching fresh brews, including a new Lager and Pale Ale.
Comiskey Group Director Rob Comiskey said: “One of the main reasons we purchased The Imperial Hotel was its connection to the brewery.
“We saw the site as an iconic landmark for the Sunshine Coast, brimming with untapped potential. Owning the brewery as well was an obvious next step, enabling us to invest further and make it the centrepiece of the hotel.
“With its deep roots in the

Vietnam: Ha Long Beer and Beverage JSC beating industry giants with high returns and generous dividends
|
A small Quang Ninh brewery is beating industry giants with high returns and generous dividends, VietNamNet reported on April 2.
Despite tightening regulations on alcohol consumption affecting industry revenues, Ha Long Beer and Beverage JSC (ticker: HLB) has reported robust earnings and an exceptionally high share price - outperforming even major industry players like Sabeco and Habeco.
According to its audited consolidated financial statement for 2024, Ha Long Beer recorded VND 1.572 trillion (approx. USD 63.5 million) in revenue from sales and services, up 7% from 2023.

Established in 1989 as Quang Ninh Confectionery Enterprise, it was renamed Quang Ninh Beer and Beverage Factory that same year. In 1996, it became Ha Long Beer and Beverage Company, and was officially converted to a joint stock company in 2003.
In 2017, its shares (HLB) were listed

India: United Breweries introduces two flavoured Kingfisher beers in India
|
Heineken’s United Breweries Limited (UBL) has introduced two flavoured Kingfisher beers into the Indian market, db reports.
The Kingfisher branded beers, named Lemon Masala and Mango Berry Twist, have been positioned to appeal to Gen Z consumers and have been inspired by the country’s street food scene.
According to the company, the new flavours fuse traditional Indian tastes with contemporary brewing techniques. Each beer is packaged in a 330ml can which is 100% recyclable.
Last year, UBL recorded a more than five-fold leap in profit in the January – March period of 2023-24. This was largely down to the company seeing strong growth for its Kingfisher brand’s popularity, across the south and eastern Asia regions.
However this new move for the brand is proving it has more in the pipeline than its core offering, with the new cans rolling out across India and, created by Canpack, the company has hinted that each of the new beers is extremely convenient and “perfect for on-the-go consumption.
The new custom-designed cans feature images of the street food carts that are the cultural inspiration behind the new flavours. However, the company has insisted that the new beer cans have practical benefits too because they are lightweight, recyclable and very
