Brewery news USA, MI: Barrister Brewing Co. to open for business on May 6
The only craft brewery and taproom in Shiawassee County will be open for business on Monday, May 6, WNEM reported on May 2.

Barrister Brewing Co., located at 902 W. Main St. in Owosso, is housed in a historic building from the 1800s. It’s been turned into a taproom, brewhouse, and commercial kitchen, but the company kept many of the building’s historic elements, such as the original flooring and original front doors.

The company also did as much re-purposing as possible, such as re-wiring old light fixtures found in the basement, turning several old solid wood doors into guest tables and seats, and crafted the bar top from wood that was originally part of the garage.

The brewery’s meals and craft beverages, including 10 beers and hard seltzer on tap, are produced from locally sourced products. The kitchen uses local grains to create house-made buns, rolls, pretzels, and more, which pairs well with its beer cheese, chili, unique house-made sausage, and smoked local meats, the brewery said.

The company said it buys its grain from Michigan farmers and sends spent grain to a local farmer who uses it for animal feed.

Barrister Brewing Co. will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Female owned Dough Daddy Brewery launches in Gibsonia
Caliente Pizza and Draft House, a pioneer in the craft beer and gourmet pizza scene, is proud to announce that the Caliente Family is growing with the grand opening of Dough Daddy Brewery in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania. Formerly known as Dough Daddy Beer Co., the establishment has evolved into a full-fledged brewery, marking an exciting new chapter for the brand. Owned by Angie Bogacz, the wife of Caliente Pizza and Draft House owner Nick Bogacz, Dough Daddy Brewery stands to carve a unique space in the beer world as a female owned and operated brewery, Brewbound reported on April 30.

Taking over the tasting room and beer garden previously occupied by Strange Roots, Dough Daddy Brewery will continue brewing their renowned beer on-site alongside Strange Roots. Both breweries will maintain their operations in Gibsonia, PA, with Strange Roots continuing to operate their Millvale and New Kensington taprooms as usual.

Located in the heart of Gibsonia, Dough Daddy Brewery is poised to become a destination for beer enthusiasts and food lovers alike. The expansion underscores Dough Daddy Brewery's commitment to innovation and quality in craft brewing.

"Dough Daddy Brewery represents the culmination of our passion for craft beer and dedication to excellence," said Angie Bogacz, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Third Space Brewing’s Innovation Brewhouse to open in Menomonee Falls tentatively in June
Construction is underway for Third Space Brewing’s Innovation Brewhouse in Menomonee Falls with a tentative opening date sometime in June, GMToday reported on April 30.

The 112-seat taproom will be located at Good Hope Road and Appleton Avenue. There will be 16 taps, as well as two side pull/specialty Czech Lukr taps for lagers. In warmer days, customers will be able to sit outside on a patio with space for up to 75. In addition to craft beers on tap, there will be a menu of elevated pub food, handhelds and shareables. The beverage menu will showcase Third Space Brewing’s beer, including existing favorites and new innovations, but will also include a selection of cocktails, liquors, wines, and non-alcoholic options.

"It’s a beautiful space that we hope will become a new ‘third space’ for people in the area looking to connect with old friends and new friends over great beer, great food, and great conversation," said Andy Gehl, Third Space Brewing’s cofounder & president.

Brewery news USA, ME: Mason’s Brewing Company suspends plans to build brewery in Auburn
Big plans for a vacant plot of land on the Androscoggin River in Auburn are in disarray, with Mason’s Brewing Company confirming it has suspended plans “for now” to bring a 7,000-square-foot restaurant and brewery to downtown Auburn in what was supposed to be a mixed-use building at 186 Main St., Auburn, the Sun Journal reported on May 1.

The development was announced back in July 2022, and was to be built on a vacant lot bought from the city by Great Falls Construction, based in Gorham.

Mason’s new brewery initially was projected to be completed and ready to open by last summer. Owner and brewer Chris Morley would not say why the plans were changed, but offered this: “We just opened another location in Machias and hope that in the future we can circle back to Auburn.”

Brewery news USA, CA: Ballast Point Brewing’s Miramar-based brewery closes resulting in a series of layoffs
Kings & Convicts Brewing has closed down Ballast Point Brewing’s Miramar-based brewery resulting in a series of staff layoffs, The Drinks Business reported on April 30.

Kings & Convicts Brewing bought Ballast Point Brewing from Constellation Brands in 2019 for an undisclosed sum, a sale that had followed Constellation Brands having spentUS$1 billion on acquiring it in 2015. At the time, Constellation Brands president and CEO Bill Newlands admitted deal had been made after trends in the US craft beer industry had “shifted dramatically” since picking up Ballast Point.

According to local reports, production at company’s HQ and 107,000-square-foot brewery ceases as it leans on contract-brewing while eyeing new locations.

Kings & Convicts Brewing CEO Brendan Watters said: “It’s been a hard week, but we had to right the ship. I’ve been trying to get us out of there for the better part of a year-and-a-half. We brought other breweries in [on a contract-brewing basis] to try to fill it up. It’s too big, and that ain’t Ballast Point. Ballast Point is Scripps Ranch back in the day, grinding 24 hours a day.”

Kings & Convicts revealed that it had initially planned to reinvigorate the Ballast Point brand, but the pandemic had left most ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NB: Cosmic Eye Brewing to close down for good in a month
Cosmic Eye Brewing will be permanently closing its doors on June 1, the business announced in a social media post on May 1st.

The brewery owners made the decision because they are “completely out of money, time and resources to continue on.”

All May events, including reservations, parties and shows, will continue as booked. However, bingo is over, and the last day of trivia is Thursday, May 2. Customers who booked events after June 1 will be contacted.

Cosmic Eye has been known for taking its beer and using it to benefit the community. In 2023, the business highlighted groups throughout Lincoln and donated a portion of their proceeds each month.

Brewery news USA, CA: DarkHeart Brewing slated to close on May 31
Nestled on the edge of Sacramento is a brewery where love for beer and pirates are equal, but soon, the entire operation will cease to exist, The Sacramento Bee reported on May 2.

DarkHeart Brewing at 4339 Auburn Blvd, Suite B, in Arden Park, is slated to close on May 31, roughly five years after celebrating its grand opening.

Owners Cynthia and Rick Lee have been upfront about their business challenges.

In a message posted to the brewery’s site, the couple announced its current location would remain open through the end of May while they search for the “right spot.” The plan was to eventually shift operations to a new facility and stay in business.

That didn’t happen.

In a farewell post to customers on May 1, the duo said the decision to liquidate their business’ inventory and cease operations comes after failing to find a “suitable alternative location.”

“We hoped there (would) be a last minute miracle but know that time has run short and for us it is time to move on to the next journey,” the Sacramento couple wrote to its more than 1,900 Instagram followers. “We hope to see you all over the next month.”

Brewery news Australia: Asahi to close Matilda Bay's brewpub in Healesville, brand to continue
Asahi Beverages has announced it will be closing Matilda Bay's brewpub in Healesville on May 19, less than five years after the pioneering brewery was revived by the major brewer and its founder, Phil Sexton, The Crafty Pint reported on May 2.

Ryan Saundry, general manager of Fire & Earth Ventures (the craft arm of Asahi/CUB), said in an emailed statement that, while they had enjoyed some success with innovation at the Matilda Bay brewpub, they'd made the "difficult decision" to close the doors and cease manufacturing there.

"We want to express our thanks and gratitude to our Matilda Bay team who have helped us expand the brand over the last few years, including through the very challenging COVID-19 period when we first launched the brewpub," Ryan said.

"The team really embodies the pioneering spirit of Matilda Bay, and we thank them for their contributions over the past few years."

Asahi said the closure would impact existing team members but they were supporting those impacted and actively exploring other roles within the business. They added that, while the venue would close, Matilda Bay beers will continue to be brewed at other CUB sites, including Pirate Life in Port Adelaide.

Brewery news World: Guinness' non-alcoholic beer proving to be a hit worldwide
Guinness' non-alcoholic offering is proving to be a hit on both sides of the pond, with sales of the alcohol free stout increasing by nearly 50 percent last year, Microsoft Start reported on April 30.

Guinness 0.0 was rolled out in in 2021 and Diageo, the owners of the iconic brand, have been majorly pushing the product, particularly across the US, over the past year.

The hard work seems to have paid off. New figures shared this week show that sales of Guinness 0.0 increased by 48.7 percent between February 2023 and February 2024 in bars, restaurants and hotels.

Guinness 0.0 was the second best-selling non-alcoholic beer in the US last year, according to Insider Monkey.

Diageo increased the production capacity for Guinness 0.0 in Dublin by 300 percent last year, investing nearly $27million in a new dedicated building at St James' Gate.

The brewery plans to produce nearly 90 million pints of the non-alcoholic stout for the domestic and international market, including the US, this year.

Barry O’Sullivan, who leads Diageo in Ireland, told the Business Post that the company plans to increase the amount of pubs in Ireland with Guinness 0.0 taps from 1,400 to 2,000 by the end of the year.

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine barley exports seen high in May, producers’ union says
Ukraine has exported around 200,000 metric tonnes of barley in April and already contracted 180,000 tonnes for exports in May, agricultural producers' union said on April 30.

"We are actively selling old crop," the Agrarian Council, Ukraine's largest agribusiness group, said in a statement.

"We have already contracted 180,000 tonnes for May, of which at least one ship will be sent to China," it said.

Ukraine is a traditional barley grower and has exported about 2.2 million tonnes of the commodity so far in the 2023/24 July-June season.

The council said high export demand may push notional prices up by $2-$3 per tonne in the near future and the prices may reach $157-158 CPT (carriage paid to) in a week.

Barley news Ukraine: Feed barley prices up in April due to reduced supply
According to APK-Inform Agency, in April the prices for feed barley gradually increased in Ukraine.

The situation was mainly driven by the reduced supply of the grain on the market, rather high demand from traders and processing companies, and the corresponding dynamics on the adjacent markets.

Thus, during the month, the demand prices for feed barley increased by 200-500 UAH/t and as of May 1 were mainly recorded in the range of 5000-6400 UAH/t CPT. The maximum prices were typical for the southern region.

Brewery news Australia: Prompts for investigation into international control over Australian beer market
The Federal Government and independent brewers are pushing the ACCC to investigate into the enormous power that large international companies have in the Australian beer market, 6PR reported on April 30.

Up to 85% of all beer brewed in Australia is produced by either one of two internationally owned companies, Lion or Carlton & United Breweries.

Independent Brewers Association CEO Kylie Lethbridge told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live these companies are locking up close to 90% of taps in venues through lucrative contracts, pushing up prices.

“The compounding effects for our breweries…we’re seeings those that are going into administration, those that are closing their doors, consolidating or going into hibernation so it is the most challenging time for the evolution of craft beer in our country,” Lethbridge said.
