Barley news Australia: Barley prices stronger in September
Australian sugar, barley and feed grain prices were stronger in September, in contrast to cattle prices which have reached their lowest levels since late 2014, according to NAB’s October Rural Commodities Wrap, Grain Central reported on October 16.

Released today, the Wrap reports the NAB Rural Commodities Index fell 4.6 percent in September and is now 34pc below the peak in rural prices back in June 2022.

Cattle was the key driver of the decline in the Index, with the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator plunging 21pc month on month in September and falling further in early October.

NAB senior economist Gerard Burg said the formal declaration of an El Niño event and associated challenging seasonal conditions was driving volatility in rural commodity prices.

“Various reports suggest that low confidence due to current and upcoming seasonal conditions may have encouraged producers to sell off stock, driving cattle prices lower,” Mr Burg said.

“Last month was the driest September on record with rainfall almost 71pc below average, and the third hottest.

“The Bureau of Meteorology’s outlook for both October and November look extremely dry in most regions of the country.

“El Niño is associated with hotter and drier conditions across eastern and northern Australia, which is likely to negatively ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Winter grain sowing 65.2% complete
Ukraine’s agriculture ministry said on October 16 that farmers had sown around 3.3 million hectares of winter grain crops as of Oct. 16, or 65.2% of the expected area, Reuters reported.

The area included 3.02 million hectares of winter wheat, or 69.3% of the expected area, the ministry said in a statement.

Ukraine is a traditional grower of winter wheat, which accounts for at least 95% of its overall wheat output.

Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky said this month that Ukraine was likely to sow less winter wheat than it initially expected for the 2024 harvest due to the prolonged absence of rain across most regions.

Solsky gave no exact figure for the acreage that could be sown this year while the ministry has still expected a sowing area of 4.36 million hectares.

The ministry also said farmers had sown 260,000 hectares of winter barley and 1.12 million hectares of winter rapeseed.

Producers plan to sow 692,100 hectares of winter barley and 1.2 million hectares of winter rapeseed this year.

Farmers sowed 4.46 million hectares of winter wheat, 612,200 hectares of winter barley and 1.376 million hectares of winter rapeseed for the 2023 harvest.

Ukraine is expected to harvest 79 million tons of grain and oilseed in 2023, with ...More info on site

Hops news New Zealand: Largest hop growers have some tricks up their sleeve to be at forefront of global beer game
The largest producers of hops in New Zealand have some new tricks up their sleeve to cement their place at the forefront of the global beer game, Stuff.co.nz reported on October 18.

Clayton Hops have a patent pending on technology they’ve developed that could reduce the amount of plant material brewers need to add to the mix.

Using a cryogenic system to freeze “all the goodness that the brewers are after” was something Clayton Hops chief executive Brian Clayton said was being done by only two other hop producers around the world currently.

“This is another first for New Zealand, it’s the first for the Southern Hemisphere actually,” Clayton said.

The technology meant that hops could practically be put in one end of the system, and out the other end came concentrated hop pellets made up of frozen Lupulin glands – the part of hops that contained the bitterness and oils that brewers wanted.

“It effectively allows us to produce hop pellets that are double the concentration of normal pellets,” Clayton said.

“This is all about massive boosts in flavours and aromas, cutting down on transportation, storage ... less plant material, because it’s doubly concentrated, so better beer yields.”

Clayton Hops’ other product launched alongside the pellets ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Pernod Ricard considering adding more types of Scotch to its offer in India
French drinks giant Pernod Ricard is considering introducing more types of Scotch in India to tap the growing thirst for top-tier whiskey in the world’s most populous nation, the Straits Times reported on October 17.

Pernod’s Chivas Brothers, the world’s second-biggest producer of the Scottish spirit including namesake blend Chivas Regal, may add some of its smaller brands to an existing range of single malts, such as The Glenlivet, currently sold in India.

“We have a number of single malts in Scotland, but not all of them are present for the time being in India,” Mr Jean-Etienne Gourgues, Chivas’ chairman and chief executive officer, said in an interview from the sand-fringed Indian state of Goa, which has become a hub for local distillers.

“We are looking at everything,” he added.

The company’s Secret Speyside single malts, for instance, are not sold in India. Mr Gourgues, however, declined to share details on brands that might be introduced in the country.

Pernod’s push in India – which accounts for 10 per cent of its group sales and where it faces competition from rival booze titan Diageo and flourishing local craft producers – is part of a wider strategy to get Asian drinkers to spend ...More info on site
