USA, WA: West Plains Brewing LLC coming to Airway Heights this month
|
In 1985, Matt Swanson’s parents bought him a home beer-brewing kit, kicking off a hobby that would later evolve into the next chapter of his career, the Spokane Journal of Business reported on July 3.
“It turned out to be great, and I was hooked,” he says. “I produced some awful batches of beer over the years, some astounding failures, but I’ve also won a couple of contests. People said, ‘You should really sell this stuff.’”
He’s finally taking that advice.
Matt and his wife, Monica, will open West Plains Brewing LLC this month in a 3,600-square-foot space at 12622 W. Sunset Highway, in Airway Heights.
“We wanted a place for people to gather and be able to have a relaxing time,” he says.
Airway Heights is an attractive place to open a brewery, he says. The proximity to Fairchild Air Force Base and an increase in multifamily housing in the area create promising potential for bringing in both young people and families, he says.
West Plains Brewing has 14 taps, 10 of which will be a rotating selection of beers brewed on site. The remaining four taps will be used for hop water, kombucha, cider, and possibly a guest beer.

USA, FL: Magnanimous Brewing bids farewell to Brandenton location, new brewery to take its place
|
After two years in business, a downtown Bradenton brewery has bid farewell to the area. Yet it's not all bad news for local craft beer lovers, as a new brewery is taking its place, Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported on July 1.
Magnanimous Brewing's last day of business at its 803 17th Ave. W. location, across the street from LECOM Park, was June 30, according to a social media post by the brewery.
Bradenton was the second location for Magnanimous, which was founded in Tampa Heights and has since added a taproom in Tampa's Seminole Heights neighborhood. Both of Magnanimous' Tampa locations will remain open, while the Miami-based Sun Lab Brewing will take over its former Bradenton taproom, with plans to open this week.
"Though we have had a great time in Bradenton and made some fond memories, the time has come for a new addition to the Bradenton community," Magnanimous' post read.
Sun Lab founder Keith Fekete said they will likely have around five of their own beers on tap initially, along with offerings from other breweries, gradually adding more Sun Lab beers to the taproom's 16 drafts. USA: New Belgium Brewing to take over production of Kirin Ichiban and Kirin Light in the US
|
We’re now all too familiar with hearing that imported beers are shifting to stateside production. And while Anheuser-Busch has been brewing all domestically-sold Kirin beers since 1996, that responsibility is about to change hands, VinePair reported on July 1.
New Belgium Brewing has announced that it will take over the domestic production of Kirin Ichiban and Kirin Light at the end of this year, lining up with the end of Kirin’s contract brewing deal with AB InBev. According to a press release, the decision comes from a logistical maneuver to relocate Kirin’s U.S. production to its subsidiary’s facilities as Kirin’s Australian subsidiary, Lion, acquired New Belgium Brewing in 2019.
“We appreciate Anheuser-Busch’s many years of strong business partnership supporting Kirin Ichiban and Kirin Light in the U.S.,” said general manager of Kirin’s overseas business department Masakazu Ashida in the release. “We are grateful for all parties’ collaboration and commitment to ensuring continued success of our brands during this time of transition.”
New Belgium is expected to take the reins of all production, marketing, and sales of Kirin Ichiban and Kirin Light starting in January 2025. The brewery currently owns facilities in Fort Collins, Colo. and Asheville, N.C.

USA, OR: Three Creeks Brewing’s facility still for sale
|
Three Creeks Brewing has been an important fixture of the Central Oregon beer industry since opening in 2008. A popular attraction in this heavy outdoors destination just northwest of Bend, Three Creeks has been distributed throughout the state from the times of bottles, to cans and draft, winning many awards both locally and nationally over their 16 years. In 2020, Three Creeks was named Brewery Group and Brewery Group Brewer of the Year at the prestigious Great American Beer Festival®, New School Beer reported on July 2.
Three Creeks founder Wade Underwood announced in June that he had sold the brewery to Jacob Whitney, who is the owner of five or so bars in the Gresham and Troutdale area. Whitney got his start in the industry bartending at Main Street Ale House, a now defunct brewery in Gresham. He purchased Bar 33, also in Gresham, in 2011, and the Skyland Pub in Troutdale in 2019. According to an announcement by Underwood, the pub staff at Three Creeks Brewing will be retained but the production brewery will be shuttered.

USA, FL: Six Ten Brewing closing its doors for good
|
After celebrating a decade in Tampa Bay, Town ‘N’ Country’s popular Six Ten Brewing (7052 Benjamin Rd.) is emptying its kegs and closing its doors this weekend, the Creative Loafing Tampa Bay reported on June 29.
The local brewery—largely known for its wide variety of craft beers, regular event programming, and friendly hospitality—took to social media this week to announce the sale of its building and imminent closure of Six Ten.
“It is with mixed emotions that we announce the closing of our beloved brewery, as we have made the difficult decision to sell and allow another brewery to begin their journey,” Six Ten Brewing wrote on social media earlier this week. “From the first pint we poured to the countless celebrations, events and gatherings, every moment has been a life-changing experience for us. We are deeply grateful for the trust you placed in us, the feedback you shared, and the loyalty you showed.”
Six Ten's day last of service will be this Sunday, June 30.

USA, PA: Mellow Mink Brewing to permanently close by end of August
|
Mellow Mink Brewing, located at 4830 Carlisle Pike in Hampden Township, Cumberland County, has announced it will permanently close by the end of August. The brewery, established in 2018 by Cole Taylor and Matt Miller, revealed the closure through a Facebook post on July 2.
Known for a diverse beer lineup, including Cloud Cobra IPA and Saison de Mink, along with unique offerings like Blueberry Pancake Stout and Strawberry Banana Berliner Weisse, Mellow Mink also produced hard sodas and offered house-made cocktails and locally sourced hard ciders. The brewery plans to release several small batch and full-scale blends in the coming weeks as it winds down operations.

USA, NJ: Backward Flag Brewing Co. closes down for good
|
Backward Flag Brewing Co., which opened in Lacey in 2015, has closed, Asbury Park Press reported on July 1.
The last day for the brewery, owned by U.S. Army veteran Torie Fisher, was June 29.
News of the closing was shared on social media.
"We know how hard this news will hit some. We feel that sting, too," read the announcement. "We have fought to keep our doors open for a while now, but this is a fight we cannot win. We are so grateful for the community that has risen up around us over the years. It is meant with all genuineness that it has been a privilege and an honor to serve you."
Fisher, who served two tours of duty in Iraq, ran Backward Flag with head brewer Melinda Gulsever, a member of the Army National Guard.
The brewery employed a large number of veterans, first responders and their family members; launched a charitable organization to help veterans after 9/11; released a series of canned beers to benefit veterans; and supported LGBTQ causes.

New Zealand: Alcohol companies investing heavily in low or no-alcohol beverages
|
Alcohol companies are heavily investing in low or no-alcohol beverages amid soaring demand, reflecting a Kiwi drinking culture shift that's been gaining momentum over the past 15 years, Newshub reported on July 1.
It looks like wine, tastes like wine, and is made with grapes (like wine), but it doesn't come with the effects too much wine can have.
"It's all about finding a process that starts with a good regular wine and removing the alcohol as delicately as you can - wine is quite fragile," Duncan Shouler, Giesen Group's director of winemaking, told Newshub.
Giesen has upgraded to a bigger and better spinning cone to achieve this.
"It removes the aroma from the wine, so we capture the aroma and we put it to one side and then we put the wine back through the machine again and it removes all the alcohol... then we take the aroma and put it back into the wine."
The spinning cone operates 24/7 to keep up with increasing demand for alcohol-free beverages.
"We've grown from producing none four-and-a-half years ago, to producing just under two million litres per year," Shouler said.
That's 15 percent of total production.

France: Carlsberg buys minority stake in French brewery Brasserie du Pays Flamand

Carlsberg, via its French subsidiary Brasseries Kronenbourg, has purchased a minority stake in Brasserie du Pays Flamand, a local brewery based in France, FoodBev Media reported on July 3.
The move is aimed at bolstering the presence of its Anosteké brand across the country.
The strategic partnership focuses on exclusive distribution agreements for supermarkets and on-trade establishments nationwide. It also includes plans to triple production capacity at Brasserie du Pays Flamand's Merville site to 200,000 hectoliters over the next five years, supported by a €25 million investment. In addition, the acquisition is expected to generate several dozen jobs.
Through this partnership, Brasserie du Pays Flamand and Carlsberg aim to accelerate the rollout of the Anosteké brand across France and, to a lesser extent, the Bracine brand.

Australia: Australia's breweries hang on, as craft beer industry issues come to a head

At the recent Great Australian Beer Spectacular (GABS) in Melbourne, there were a series of accidental but unfortunate metaphors on show, ABC reported on June 29.
In one booth, a high metal bar had been erected to see who could cling onto it the longest (or 'dead hang').
Nearby, precariously balanced beer glasses were set up for a game called 'Knock 'em Over.'
A few metres down, a brewery who had recently been knocked into voluntary administration and was now hanging on out the other side, tried to put on a brave face.
"It's been a hell of a moment," said Brendon Guild from Bad Shepherd Brewing.
The brewery's story was hardly an isolated one, even within the festival itself.
"When I got here at nine this morning to get things set up, I walked around to have a look at who was here," said Mr Guild.
"There's a lot of breweries that I'm used to seeing who aren't here."
The past year has seen the problems bubbling beneath the surface in the craft beer industry spill over into public view.
News of voluntary administrations or independent brewery closures have become alarmingly regular (only this week, Melbourne's Alchemy Brewing announced it would be closing for good).

Nigeria: Government urged to prioritize sorghum cultivation to reduce reliance on imported barley
|
A Professor of Brewing Science and Technology at the University of Uyo, Augustine Chima Ogbonna, has urged the federal government to prioritise the cultivation of sorghum seeds to reduce the country’s reliance on imported barley for beer production, Blueprint reported on July 1.
Prof. Ogbonna, a specialist in malting technology and brewing enzymology, disclosed this during the university’s 102nd inaugural lecture, titled: ‘From Barley to Sorghum: A Paradigm Shift for the Nigerian Brewing Industry”, held at the UNIUYO permanent campus, Uyo on July 1.
He emphasised the need for consistent policies that promote the use of local raw materials in beer brewing.
The don, who was the inaugural lecturer, suggested that the government should develop a sorghum breed that can replace imported barley and enact a supportive national agricultural policy to ensure widespread utilisation of high-yield sorghum hybrid seeds by local farmers.

UK: Budweiser Brewing Group to distribute San Miguel beer in the UK
|
AB InBev subsidiary Budweiser Brewing Group has signed a new deal with Mahou San Miguel (MSM) to distribute San Miguel in the UK, The Drinks Business reported on July 2.
The deal follows news that Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) is bringing its licence partnership with MSM to a close next year and will bring the Spanish brewer’s two flagship beer brands under one umbrella, with Budweiser Brewing Group already distributing Mahou in the UK.
Speaking about the end of the partnership, CMBC confirmed that its long-term exclusive licensed production and distribution agreement with San Miguel will end officially on 31 December 2024. Until that date, CMBC will remain as the exclusive licence partner for MSM and will continue to exclusively brew, distribute and market the San Miguel brand as normal until that time.
CMBC will work closely with MSM and its new licence partner Budweiser Brewing Group over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition. San Miguel will join Budweiser Brewing Group’s portfolio from 1 January 2025 when the company will begin to distribute and promote San Miguel’s range of world beers in the UK, including San Miguel Especial, San Miguel 0.0 and San Miguel Gluten Free.

Significant changing of the guard at Heineken Italia: after four years Wietse Mutters leaves the role of CEO to lead Heineken Vietnam. Replacing him, starting from next August 1st, will be Alexander Koch , with a long career in the Dutch group, who, in exactly one month, will leave his role as CEO of the Vietnamese branch of Heineken, EFA News reported on July 1.

Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia appoints new MD
|
Heineken Malaysia Bhd has appointed Martijn Rene Van Keulen as its new MD effective from July 1, 2024, The Malaysian Reserve reported.
According to its bourse filing on July 1, Van Keulen, aged 48 and originally from the Netherlands, will succeed Roland Bala, aged 58, who is resigning to assume the role of managing director at Multi Bintang Indonesia starting July 1.
Van Keulen brings extensive experience from Heineken International, having joined in 2000 and served in various commercial roles.
His tenure includes a notable stint as global account manager for Heineken Global Duty Free and Travel Retail, where he spent four years.
From July 2020 to June 2024, Van Keulen served as managing director of Heineken Myanmar, where he led his team through a transformative period, achieving strong performance despite significant operational challenges faced by the company.

Russia: Export duty on Russian barley remains zero
|
The export duty on Russian wheat has dropped 27% to 1,818.2 rubles per tonne as of July 3 from 2,492.8 rubles per tonne during the previous duty period, the Agriculture Ministry said.
The reduction results from the government hiking the baseline price to calculate the duty by 1,000 rubles to 18,000 rubles per tonne as of June 28.
The respective duties on barley and corn have remained zero.
Duty rates are based on indicative prices of $236.30 per tonne for wheat against $235.80 per tonne the previous duty period, $173.70 per tonne for barley versus $165 per tonne, and $180.60 per tonne for corn against $177.80 per tonne.
The duties are valid until July 9, inclusive.
The Russian government on June 2, 2021, implemented a grain damper mechanism that stipulates floating duties on exports of wheat, corn, and barley, as well as returning the funds received from the duties in order to subsidize agricultural producers. The duties are calculated weekly on the basis of price indicators based on the value of export contracts registered on the Moscow Exchange .
