Brewery news Mexico: Brewers at the center of climate fight in Mexico
Brewers and other heavy water users have landed at the center of the climate fight in Mexico as the government and industry confront water shortages in the north, The New York Times reported on November 13.

As northern Mexico this year endured one of its worst droughts in decades, brewers dotting the parched landscape guzzled vast quantities of water, pumping out national favorites like Corona and Tecate that helped make the country the world’s largest exporter of beer.

At the imposing brick Heineken plant in the city of Monterrey, the pipes never stopped flowing, even as fights broke out at lines for government water trucks and as parasites spread among children who missed regular baths.

The water in Blanca Guzmán’s neighborhood had been out for days when she decided to protest, joining a group of activists in July to block the entrance to Heineken’s office.

“You’d open the tap and there wouldn’t be a drop of water,” she said. The brewing factories, though, “they produced and produced and produced.”

As droughts become more frequent and severe around the world, brewers and other heavy industrial water users have landed at the center of the climate fight in Mexico, with activists leading a movement to reclaim resources ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria’s share price depreciated by low sentiment in Nigerian equities market
As low sentiment continues to deepen in the Nigerian equities market, Guinness Nigeria’s share price depreciated by 19% to close at N60.50 per share, taking the market capitalization to N132.518 billion from N163.512 billion closed on the 15th of November, Nairametrics reported.

The decline can be attributed to investors’ negative sentiment as the build-up to the 2023 election and the recent interest rate hike by the CBN continue to impact negatively on the market.

Hence, the sell-pressures resulted in a loss of N30.994 billion in market capitalization at the close of trading activities on the Nigeria Exchange.

Findings by Nairametrics showed that Guinness Nigeria’s shares price dropped from N74.65 per share at the start of the trading on the 16th of November to N60.50 per share, representing a 19% drop in the last two days. Guinness began the year with a share price of N39.00 and has since gained 55.1% on the price valuation.

Guinness Nigeria Plc, a subsidiary of Diageo Plc, announced its unaudited results for its first quarter period that ended 30 September 2022, revealing a 32% decrease in profit after tax to N2.748 billion from N4.043 billion in 2021.

Brewery news Ireland: Guinness promises not to increase its prices this year
There was some relief in pubs on November 15 after the news that Guinness will not be increasing the price it charges publicans this year, the Business Plus reported.

Brewing giant Diageo confirmed to senior publicans that keg prices will not rise until next year, which follows an announcement last week by Heineken - which also brews the Beamish, Murphy's and Ireland's Edge stouts - of a 17c-a-pint rise.

But the Guinness news might only provide temporary relief to publicans and punters, with the new year less than seven weeks away.

The news comes as one leading publican reacted to the Heineken price rises by tweeting a picture of dozens of bottles of Heineken and Coors beers in unopened cases in his cellar yesterday, captioned: "Being returned to our suppliers today."

The Swan Pub owner Ronan Lynch, and treasurer of the Dublin publicans' group the Licensed Vintners Association, did not respond for comment yesterday but added in his tweet: "Zero explanation needed."

Heineken's increases mean pubs are expected to hike their price of pints of Coors, Orchard Thieves, Heineken and Moretti by up to 40c to match wholesale price increases.

Kavanagh's Pub on New Street, Dublin, said: "All pubs should remove at least one of Heineken's ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Budweiser monitoring prices and costs as rival Heineken announces price hike
Budweiser is monitoring its prices and costs, a week after rival brewer Heineken announced it was raising the price of beer, Independent.ie reported on November 13.

The brewing giant said grain, energy and glass prices have created significant cost pressures, with furnaces used in bottle production requiring huge energy resources.

“We are also facing increases in waste packaging and other taxes,” said a spokeswoman for the Budweiser Brewing Group.

“We evaluate our input costs and make necessary price adjustments on an ongoing basis while driving efficiencies in our business through sustainability and other initiatives.”

She said energy and grain prices have increased significantly over the past year.

“We are unwilling to compromise on providing the highest quality products to our customers,” she added.

Last week, Heineken cited similar pressures when it told publicans a 9pc increase in wholesale draught prices will come into effect next month.

It said malt prices had increased by 120pc, while diesel was up 67pc.

Global food commodity prices are up 2pc compared with October last year, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation data. Cereal prices are up 11pc.

CSO consumer price index (CPI) figures show general inflation hit 9.2pc in Ireland in the year to last month, but the cost of beer ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Asahi to close Dark Star Brewery
Asahi is set to close Dark Star Brewery at its Partridge Green (West Sussex) site due to the brewery operating at “significantly below capacity”, The Drinks Business reported on November 17.

According to the Japanese drinks company, the decision to close Dark Star is set to see Asahi move the entire Dark Star beer portfolio over to its Meantime Brewery in Greenwich, London and no longer brew beers in its Sussex home.

Speaking to The Drinks Business, a spokesperson at Asahi said: “We have put forward a proposal for Dark Star to cease trading at its current site, in Partridge Green West Sussex, as of 31st December 2022, and for operations for the brand to move to the Meantime brewery in Greenwich. This is not a step we have taken lightly, however there are significant challenges in the current economic and operating environment that make this the right course of action for the business and the brand. The Dark Star site operates significantly below capacity which is unfortunately not sustainable.”

The spokesperson added: “We believe strongly in Dark Star and remain committed to building for its future success. The Dark Star beers will remain exactly as they are today – brewed to the ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken to raise beer and cider prices, reduce alcohol content in Fosters beer
Heineken will increase the price of their beer and cider by more than 15 per cent after Christmas due to 'unprecedented cost increases', The Mail Online reported on November 15.

Punters will be have to shell out £7 or more for some draft Heineken beers from January 16, after the prices rise by an average of 15.8 per cent.

On top of increasing wholesale prices, the brewery also told landlords it will be reducing the alcohol content in Fosters, from 4 per cent to 3.7 per cent, citing 'consumer trends towards lower strength products'.

Looking at prices taken on November 15 from central London Green King pubs, the hikes could mean a Heineken Silver would go from £6.50 to 6.86 - up 36p.

Amstel would rise from £5.75 to £6.12 up 37p, Birra Moretti from £6.60 to £7.01 - up 41p, Kronenbourg 1664 from £5.75 to £6.07 - up 32p, Old Mout Berries and Cherries - from £6.45 to £6.86 up 41p and Fosters from £5.55 to £5.85 - up 30p.

Their draught lager range will rise on average by 36p per pint, with 15 per cent to 17 per cent hikes for all of them.

Brewery news Nigeria: International Brewery struggling to get out of incessant losses
Nigeria’s third largest brewer, International Brewery has faced several challenges in the last 5 years since it launched a major offensive for market share in Nigeria’s brewery sector, Nairametrics reported.

The company has reported losses every year since 2018 accumulating a total loss of N36.6 billion as captured in the company’s balance sheet. The company is a proud part of the world’s largest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world’s largest brewer with over 400 beer brands and over 50 years in the brewing business.

Yet, it is struggling to get out of the challenges of incessant losses.

The latest result from the company for the third quarter of 2022 reveals it also reported a loss of N3.1 billion wiping out all the profits recorded in the first two quarters of the year. Its loss this year is N2.8 billion much improved from the N14 billion losses recorded in the first 9 months of 2021.

The company’s challenges continue to arise from its inability to reign in high operating costs reducing its gross profit margins to just 21% or N10.3 billion. However, operating expenses on admin, and marketing expenses amounted to about N14 billion last quarter alone.

Brewery news UK: Asahi launches its first alcohol-free beer in the UK
Japanese brewing giant Asahi has announced the launch of its first alcohol-free beer, Asahi Super Dry 0.0%, in the UK, with more key markets, including the United States, to follow, The Drinks Business reported on November 14.

Asahi Super Dry 0.0% comes as part of the brewer’s wider pledge for 20% of its product range to have alcohol-free alternatives by 2030.

The alcohol-free beer comes in convenient 4-pack 330ml cans and a larger 24-pack case of 330ml cans and will launch first in the UK and Ireland from January 2023. The beer will then be launched into Australia, New Zealand, United States, Canada, and France from March 2023.

Asahi’s own research found that some 43% of drinkers said they were looking to moderate their consumption, while looking for alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinking options that do not compromise on flavour.

A global marketing campaign will support the launch of Asahi Super Dry 0.0%.

Asahi has bolstered its visibility in several key sports markets over the last few years, not least through its partnership with City Football Group – which includes Manchester City Football Club. It is also the beer sponsor for Rugby World Cup 2023.

Sam Rhodes, Marketing Director, Asahi UK, commented: “The world of beer is ...More info on site

Brewery news Qatar: Organisers set to announce ban on alcohol sales two days before FIFA World Cup kicks off
Qatar World Cup organisers are set to announce a ban on alcohol sales on Friday, November 18, a World Cup official told CNN.

The announcement is expected just two days before the World Cup kicks off.

In September, Qatar said it would permit ticketed fans to buy alcoholic beer at World Cup soccer matches starting three hours before kickoff and for one hour after the final whistle, but not during the match.

CNN has reached out the Qatar Supreme Committee and FIFA for official statements.

The 2022 Qatar World Cup runs from November 20 until December 20.

Barley news France: Winter barley sowing almost completed, nearly all crops in good shape
Farmers in France, the European Union's biggest grain grower, had almost completed soft wheat and winter barley sowing by Nov. 14, and nearly all emerged crops were in good shape, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on November 18.

Farmers had sown 97% of the expected soft wheat area and 99% of the anticipated winter barley area, FranceAgriMer said in a weekly cereal crop report.

An estimated 98% of soft wheat and winter barley crops were in good or excellent condition, it said.

For durum wheat, the variety used in pasta, 74% of the anticipated area for next year's harvest had been sown.

Grain planting and crop emergence have been favoured by mild weather and adequate rainfall this autumn.

Emergence of soft wheat and winter barley crops was running about a week ahead of the usual pace, FranceAgriMer's data showed, reflecting the impact of an exceptionally warm October.

Showers this week are expected to give crops a further boost in the run-up to the winter dormancy period and help replenish soil moisture depleted by severe drought this summer.

Harvesting of grain maize, estimated to have plunged to a three-decade production low due to drought, ended in the previous week.
