Barley news France: Growing conditions for wheat and barley crops fall sharply for a second straight week
Growing conditions for wheat and barley crops in France fell sharply for a second straight week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on May 20, as a hot spell exacerbated drought in the European Union's biggest grain producer.

An estimated 73% of French soft wheat was in good or excellent condition by May 16, against 82% the previous week, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal crop report.

That followed a 7-percentage-point decline in the previous week and meant the rating was now below a year-earlier score of 79%, the office's data showed.

France has this week seen record temperatures for a month of May in some areas, further drying out soils that have received little rain this year.

The extremely dry weather has already caused severe damage to some grain crops and substantial rain will be needed by early June to avert losses in large producing regions, a technical institute said on Thursday.

Regional data in FranceAgriMer's cereal report suggested contrasts in growing conditions. In the Ile de France region around Paris, just 45% of the soft wheat crop was rated good/excellent, while in the Hauts de France, a key production region in the far north, the score was 77%.

Showers on May 20 and in ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Grain exports considerably down this month
Ukraine has exported 643,000 tonnes of grain since the start of May, considerably less than during the same period of last year when it sold 1.8 million tonnes abroad, the agriculture ministry said on May 19.

The volume has shrunk because of logistical problems since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24 and blocked Ukraine's Black sea ports, the main routes for Ukrainian grain exports.

The ministry said May's volume included about 617,000 tonnes of corn, 16,000 tonnes of wheat and 8,000 tonnes of barley. It did not say how the grain was delivered.

Senior agriculture officials have said Ukraine exported up to 300,000 tonnes of grain in March and 1.09 million tonnes in April. read more

Ukrainian traders managed to export up to 6 million tonnes of grain per month before Russia's invasion.

The ministry data showed that Ukraine has exported 46.51 million tonnes so far in the 2021/22 July-June season, versus 40.85 million a season earlier.

The ministry said 2021/22 export volumes included 18.54 million tonnes of wheat, 21.83 million tonnes of corn and 5.68 million tonnes of barley.

Barley news Australia & Costa Rica: Australia gains market access for barley exports to Costa Rica
On 28 February 2022, the Australian Government confirmed Australia has market access for barley exports to Costa Rica. This does not include malt exports, Austrade reported on May 19.

New market access, growing demand and improved business links led to an annual rise of 829% in Australian barley and malt exports to the Latin American region in 2021, according to ABS statistics. This included the first shipment of Australian barley to Mexico in January 2021.

Costa Rica is a small barley market. However, growth in imports since 2019 indicates demand is growing. In 2020, Costa Rica imported $54,000 of barley and $15.2 million of malt. Canada, the United States and Spain supplied all barley imports. The European Union and Argentina supplied most malt imports (Source: UNComtrade 2022).

In 2021, the value of Australian barley (including malt) exports to the world was a record A$3.1 billion. This was up 182% on 2020 (Source: ABS 2022).

Whisky news World: Diageo releases its oldest Talisker single malt Scotch whisky
Diageo has released its oldest Talisker single malt Scotch whisky, Talisker 44-Year-Old: Forests of the Deep, The Drinks Business reported on May 19.

The rare whisky, which was “created as a reflection on the power and beauty of our oceans” has been nurtured for over four decades and finished in marine oak casks, with only 1,997 bottles being available globally.

Talisker 44-Year-Old: Forests of the Deep, has been inspired by an expedition led by Parley for the Oceans, Talisker’s partner in ocean conservation, to one of the world’s largest sea kelp forests near the Cape of Good Hope.

Cyril Gutsch, founder & CEO at Parley said: “Kelp forests are the planet’s underwater architects, and a powerful blue carbon force within the ecosystem that makes Earth habitable. They support biodiversity and sequester and store carbon dioxide more efficiently than the rainforests. This very special and rare edition of Talisker whisky is a tribute to the beauty and fragility of these great forests of the deep, and our collaborative mission to support their protection.”

Whisky expert and writer Dave Broom added: “This is a fascinating, bold, beautifully mature Talisker made in the old, bold, defiant style. Some whiskies become refined and elegant with time, ...More info on site
