Brewery news USA, NY: Junco Brewing Co. becomes Central New York’s newest craft brewery
Junco Brewing Co. is Central New York’s newest craft brewery. It’s located at 37 Cemetery Road just southwest of the city of Oswego, Syracuse.com reported on April 29.

Owner Rick Fernandes opened the taproom with eight beers last week. He brews on a small 1-barrel (31 gallon) system and is making styles such as pale ale, stout, wheat, Belgian blonde ale, IPA and pilsner.

He is making a “hazy” New England-style IPA, but, he says, “nothing too floral or herbal. None of our beers are far out there.”

Fernandes and his wife, Dawn, have been working on the idea of a brewery for several years. He recently retired from a career in construction, and has spent several years refurbishing an old dairy barn on the property he’s owned for 20 years on Cemetery Road.

Like many in the craft industry, Fernandes started out as a homebrewer. He’s done that for 12 years.

“I’ve been planning for a while to do this,” Fernandes said. “I get to work for myself instead of somebody else — and I get to make and share beer.”

Junco has a farm brewing license, which means its sources many of its ingredients from local suppliers. In his case, that includes hops from ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Buckstin Brewing Company coming to Beaumont
Buckstin Brewing Company is coming to Beaumont, the Beaumont Enterprise reported on April 27.

In a Facebook post on April 27, the brewer announced that the Nederland taproom will remain the "home base," but it plans to roll out a new concept in Beaumont over the next year.

For over a year, we have been working diligently behind the scenes to take our dream to the next level," they said in the post. "Today we are thrilled to announce that, once again, we find ourselves in an empty space with no windows, dirt floors, and the plans and ability to turn it into something incredible. Buckstin Brewing Company is coming to Beaumont!"

Brewery news USA, PA: Sly Fox Brewing Company to open a new brewery on Pittsburgh’s South Side this May
Sly Fox Brewing Company has been making beer in eastern Pennsylvania since 1995. This May, it’s opening a 5,800-square-foot spot at The Highline on Pittsburgh’s South Side, NEXTpittsburgh reported on April 26.

There, head brewer Jon Ross will create experimental, small-batch beverages on a seven-barrel system, including the company’s first-ever sour ale.

“We’ve always wanted to brew in Pittsburgh,” says Mike Keefe, director of restaurant operations for Sly Fox.

Two years ago, a Sly Fox taproom debuted Downtown at 300 Liberty Ave. to showcase the brand ahead of the brewery’s build-out.

The Highline location at 46 S. 4th St. will operate seven days a week and have indoor seating for 140, with ample room for mingling in the 1-acre public outdoor space. Patrons can access the building from the adjacent 584-car garage — where they’ll get two free hours of parking — and follow the painted foxtail on the wall to the brewery.

There will be 19 beers and a hard seltzer on tap, along with an array of Pennsylvania-made wines and spirits.

The menu features appetizers, soups, dips, salads, wings and sandwiches. Pizzas boasting house-made dough and sauce will be baked in a stone hearth oven that’s visible from the dining room.

Once you’ve had something ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: A new brewhouse and brewing experience coming to Old World Wisconsin in Eagle
A new brewhouse and brewing experience coming to Old World Wisconsin in Eagle will help visitors tap into Wisconsin's hoppy heritage, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported on April 27.

The Brewhouse will open June 18 with beer, brats and live German music to celebrate. Free koozies will be handed out while supplies last.

The Brewhouse grand opening will celebrate Wisconsin beer history from corner bars to the big label and microbrews that have been made in this state.

Brewers will make authentic historic recipes out of kettles, and guests over 21 can enjoy samples of beer produced in the brewhouse.

Koozies will be handed out at 11 a.m. June 18, with the keg tapping at 11:20 a.m. From 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. beer and brats will be for sale while live German music plays.

Guests will also get a sneak peek at other things to come with the brewing experience at Old World Wisconsin.

The brewhouse is the first phase in a years-long plan to have a full brewing experience, which will eventually include a biergarden and Wittnebel's Tavern, an authentic 1930s tavern relocated from its original home in Old Ashippun.

A garden also will come to the brewing experience ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Osseo to soon get its very first brewery and taproom
The city of Osseo will soon get its very first brewery and taproom, CCX Media reported on April 28.

Thelema Brewing Co. will be located at 332 Central Avenue, situated between Union Speed and Style to the north and Dean’s Super Market to the south. The three owners, Brian Lasley, Ian Stanford and Joe Lien, have a combined more than 40 years experience in brewing.

The conditional use permit, approved by the city council on Monday, would allow a taproom, brewery, event space and restaurant. The owners say their space will not be just another craft brewery, but instead to “educate and serve the community” while “providing unparalleled libations of the mind, body, spirit and senses.”

In the applicant’s narrative, the owners wrote that “the craft beer scene has exploded the past 10 years and you cannot skip a rock without landing at another craft brewery.”

“So why make another one?,” the narrative continued. “We feel the scene is missing the edge that helped kick start it in the first place.”

The owners, one of whom lives in Osseo, say they selected the city for its historic downtown. They noted the building they chose is from the 1800s and featured one of the first Ford ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Armada Brewery lands on the Fair Haven peninsula
The Armada has landed on the Fair Haven peninsula, the New Haven Register reported on April 28.

Armada — as in Armada Brewery — is now open and welcoming patrons in a rehabilitated portion of the 19th-century former Bigelow Boiler factory at 190 River St.

Owner John Kraszewski, who has been distributing his beer selections since 2017 from a facility in East Haven, said he always wanted to open a taproom.

Kraszewski said he found the perfect place in the Civil War-era brick building restored by G.L.Capasso. The Capasso restoration business remains his next-door neighbor.

The first floor of the two-story building has two long, family-friendly communal tables where there is a bar in front of a giant mural of the Savage Queen, the name of one of his popular double IPAs.

The project is a family affair with the artwork created by his wife, Alexandra Ivanova.

Since he had a soft opening at the Quinnipiac River-adjacent site April 16, he said the response from friends and his neighbors in Fair Haven has been “phenomenal.”

Longtime fans came through as did nearby residents excited about a gathering place in Fair Haven that for many is walking distance.

The larger production facility is in East Haven, where the brewery ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, QB: Beer shortage looms in parts of Quebec due to Molson Coors strike
The head of the Quebec bar owners' association says some suds sellers could soon run dry because of an ongoing strike at a Molson Coors brewery, the Coast Reporter said on April 29.

Renaud Poulin says in a phone interview that since Monday, April 25 he' has received dozens of calls from pub owners who are worried they may be out of beer by next week, in particular those in rural parts of the province and under exclusive contract with Molson Coors.

In a letter to Economy Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon, the Corporation des Propriétaires de Bars, Brasseries et Tavernes du Québec calls on the provincial government to ease restrictions on beer sales and let them buy beer from other retail outlets for resale at the saloon.

Under provincial regulations, bars and restaurants can only sell bottles that are marked specifically for "on-site" consumption, as opposed to those intended for home consumption that are sold at convenience and grocery stores.

Owners are now looking out of province for cases to fill the void left by Molson products, but a limited supply of beer packaged in the on-site-branded bottles means many pubs are facing a shortage.

Frédéric Bourgeois-LeBlanc, a spokesman for Molson Coors, where 420 workers have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Yough River Brewing Co. to open its doors in Connellsville on April 29
More local beer starts to flow at a river city brewery on April 29 when Yough River Brewing Co. opens in Connellsville, Fayette County, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Just across the Youghiogheny River from the Great Allegheny Passage — the riverside trail from Pittsburgh’s Point to Cumberland, Md. — this little (2.5-barrel brewhouse) brewery and taproom opens at 4 p.m. Friday in a former plant nursery building. Owners are Matt and Jacquelyn Humes. He’s a mason who helped make over his one-time shop with garage doors that open to a big outdoor patio that welcomes bicyclists, anglers and other outdoorsy types.

“This is a big outdoors area,” Mr. Humes told the Post-Gazette this week as he worked on finishing touches for the place, which he believes will draw bikers on a 1-mile or so side trip over to South Connellsville Athletic Field. It’s just a few street numbers up from where Yough Brewing Co. started making beer more than a century ago. (It closed in 1941.)

Brewed in a building next-door to the shiny Yough River taproom and patio, the beers for the opening include Eddy of the Flow Kolsch, Purple Explanations fruit beer, Afraid Not New England-style pale ale, Blazing Paddles ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & Ukraine: AB InBev to brew Ukraine’s most popular beer brand in the US
Anheuser-Busch is bringing Ukraine's most popular beer brand to the United States with proceeds benefiting humanitarian relief in the war-torn country, CNN reported on April 27.

Beginning in May, Chernigivske will brewed at Anheuser-Busch's Newark, New Jersey, factory and be sold on draught in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix. Specific locations will be announced on a special website.

AB InBev said the initiative is "aimed at providing humanitarian relief for those impacted by the crisis in Ukraine." In addition to the beer's sales, the company will donate at least $5 million to humanitarian aid organizations, including a nonprofit called CARE Ukraine Crisis Fund.

Chernigivske's brand celebrates Ukraine's history, culture, and people, according to a description, and has "subtly fruity notes" and a "moderately bitter finish." The pale golden lager, which is part of AB InBev's portfolio, is named after the hard hit Ukrainian city of Chernihiv and has been brewed there since 1988.

The brewer has recently brought the beer to other countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. The initiative is part of broader efforts to support Ukraine, which including donating emergency drinking water and essential supplies to refugee relief areas. Brewery news USA, FL: Good Liquid Brewing Co. to close its location in Brandenton
After recently opening a new brewpub location in Lakewood Ranch's Waterside Place development, a local brewery announced it is closing its original taproom, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported on April 28.

Good Liquid Brewing Co. will close its location at 4824 14th St. W. in Bradenton's Fountains Plaza after a final day of business April 30, the brewery announced on social media. The Waterside Place location at 1570 Lakefront Drive, which opened toward the end of last year, will remain in business.

Co-owners Mike and Sandra Krail opened the original Bradenton Good Liquid location in 2017. They later partnered with Joe Guli, current CEO of the Sarasota-based Tableseide Restaurant Group that operates Libby's Neighborhood Brasserie and Circo, to open the Waterside Place Good Liquid location that also offers a full food menu.

"From food truck rallies, Oktoberfests, sour bashes, baby showers, gender reveals, and multiple milestone parties, we have made great friends and awesome memories here," Good Liquid's post read. "After an amazing 4 1/2 years, we have decided to focus our efforts on other upcoming opportunities."

Those include plans to open new brewery/restaurant locations and distilleries in the future, according to the post, though further details were not immediately available. Good Liquid is known ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Adelbert's Brewery shutting down for good after 11 years in business
After 11 years in North Austin, Adelbert's Brewery is shutting down for good, the business announced on Wednesday. The beer-maker said on social media that it is being "pushed out" of its home by development, Austin360.com reported on April 29.

"We had planned to celebrate year 10 and year 11 with a monthlong celebration this year," the brewery's statement reads. "Unfortunately, our time here will be coming to an end."

Adelbert's last day at 2314 Rutland Drive, No. 100, will be Oct. 31. According to the brewery, their location "has been slated to be torn down and replaced with an office building."

In response to comments from fans on the Instagram post announcing the closure, Adelbert's said it will not relocate, deciding after initial attempts that it would not be an option.

In the meantime, the brewery said they will continue to brew beer as long as possible and keep the taproom open, including for Austin FC games.

Scott Hovey founded Adelbert's Brewery with the idea of specializing in Belgian ales. The business was named after his late brother. Hovey spent 20 years in semiconductor sales and started brewing when his wife got him a kit.

"I didn't see the need to put out another ...More info on site

Brewery news Poland: Carlsberg’s sales in Poland fell in March and continued to drop in April
Carlsberg said its beer sales in Poland fell by 3-4% in March and have continued to drop in April, underlining the troubles facing brewers in a market which has been declining as consumers switch to wine and spirits, Reuters reported on April 28.

The Danish brewer's chief executive Cees't Hart said the trend has been exacerbated this year by an additional excise tax, inflation and since February the refugee crisis precipitated by Russia's invasion of Poland's neighbour Ukraine.

Almost 3 million Ukrainian refugees have entered Poland in less than two months, with the population of Warsaw alone growing by around 15% since Moscow began what it calls a "special military operation" in Ukraine on Feb. 24.

"A lot of big parties were cancelled, and the lives of many people were affected as they're taking care of the refugees," Hart said, adding: "Their minds are simply in a different place than celebrating life and having a beer together."

Polish consumer confidence has dropped sharply since the Ukraine crisis began, hitting 20-year lows in March and April.

Beer consumption in Poland totalled 102 litres per person last year, which is still by far the highest of any of Carlsberg's main markets. Carlsberg, which has three breweries in ...More info on site

In addition the facility now houses two additional picking machines, 12 kiln floors, one conditioning floor and one bale press, which has effectively boosted HPA’s total processing capacity by 50 per cent.

This year’s increased harvest saw HPA pick 810 hectares across three farms, producing 1656 metric tonnes of hops. This resulted in a 135 hectare (20.1 per cent) net increase and a 130 metric tonne (8.4 per cent) net increase year-on-year across HPA’s six proprietary hops – Eclipse, Ella, Enigma, Galaxy, Topaz and Vic Secret, as well as Cascade.

Head of Sales & Marketing Owen Johnston said: “HPA successfully executed a strategy to increase the production volume and brewing quality of our most in-demand Aussie hops.”

Whisky news India: Pernod Ricard urges India on to drop high tax on imported liquor
French spirits giant Pernod Ricard urged India on April 28 to drop its high tax on imported liquor, saying the tariff puts many of its drinks out of reach of consumers, the Yahoo News Singapore reported.

The 150% tax on imported liquor has long been a sore point for the industry, and poses a "large challenge" for Pernod Ricard, South Asia CEO Thibault Cuny told Reuters in an interview.

"We are in favour of free trade ... 150% in India is far beyond many other markets. It creates unaffordability of certain type of products," Cuny said at Pernod's office on the outskirts of New Delhi.

Asked if the duty should be ditched, Cuny said: "Yes, yes, we should go after zero ... the ultimate objective should be a 0%."

Industry sources say India has kept taxes high on imported liquor as it helps the government generate revenue from alcohol sales and keep consumption in check.

India's $20 billion alcohol market is set to grow by 7% each year, with whiskey and spirits among favourites, IWSR Drinks Market Analysis says, making the country of 1.4 billion people a key growth market for the likes of Pernod and Diageo.

Pernod is the world's second-biggest spirits group and owns ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Asahi shares surge after announcement of first price increases in 14 years
Shares in Asahi Group Holdings surged on April 27 after the Japanese beermaker announced its first price increases for canned beer in 14 years and a range of other price hikes to cope with rising costs, Reuters reported.

Retail prices on 162 items, mostly beer products, will rise between 6% and 10% from Oct. 1, reflecting increasing costs for materials, energy and transportation, it said on April 26 after the market closed.

After decades of deflation in Japan, consumer price pressures have mounted as the cost of fuel and other commodities soar in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and due to logistical snags caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Asahi's stock climbed 4.3%, outperforming a 1.2% drop in the benchmark Nikkei index.

Rivals Kirin Holdings Co and Sapporo Holdings Ltd said on April 27 they are also considering price increases but have not made a decision yet.

A Suntory Holdings Ltd spokesperson said the company had no comment, noting the company's last price changes for its beer and wine products were in October 2020.

Asahi is Japan's biggest beer maker, commanding nearly 40% of the market.
