Scientific Digest

Dedicated to Dr. Koen Goiris, who passed away in 2017, a Belgium research group published an extensive overview about everything there is to know about alpha acid and its isomerization. From the biosynthesis of bitter acids in the hop plant, the solubility properties of alpha acids in wort and beer, to the reaction mechanisms and kinetics of converting alpha acids into iso alpha acids — all relevant research and publications are summarized here. And as the authors say and I agree "this review paper will help scientists to find their way and discover new things in the fascinating field of hop research."

Brewery news Myanmar: Carlsberg launches Black Eagle Stout in Myanmar
Carlsberg, the Copenhagen, Denmark-based beer maker, on February 26 launched Black Eagle Stout in Yangon, its first dark beer in Myanmar and the latest product in its portfolio of brands in the country, the Myanmar Times reported on March 1.

The new Black Eagle Stout contains 8.8 percent alcohol by volume, giving it a smooth bitter and sweet aftertaste, Carlsberg said.

“For Carlsberg Group, Myanmar is one of the prominent markets across the globe where many of our customers are enjoying our brands. We believe that Myanmar people deserved a better relaxation after a hardworking day to release stress, said Ted Liang, Marketing Director at Carlsberg Myanmar.

Brewery news USA: Heineken to cut US workforce by 15%
The US division of beer giant Heineken has announced that it will be cutting its workforce by 15%, stating that the restructuring would “enable more efficient ways of working”, The Drinks Business reported on February 28.

As reported by Brewbound, spokesperson for Heineken USA, Bjorn Trowery, confirmed in a statement that the company was making job cuts.

He said: “We are modifying our sales team structure to align with our strategy and to enable more efficient ways of working.

“This will help Heineken USA be more cost effective, and allow us to reinvest behind our brands and business in the US. While change that impacts our people is always difficult, we believe these changes will better position Heineken USA for the future.”

Trowery also told the news site that Heineken was “actively” seeking “new opportunities” for those members of staff who are losing their roles.

In October last year, Heineken-owned brewer Lagunitas made over 100 employees redundant –12% of its workforce – in the wake of what it called a rapidly evolving and “more challenging” market.

Other big beer companies to have made cuts in recent months include AB InBev, MillerCoors, Constellation Brands and Pabst Brewing. Constellation Brands also recently confirmed rumours that will sell or ...More info on site
