Brewery news USA & Germany: January-May beer sales drop in the US but increase in Germany
The USA saw domestic beer sales decline by 6.4% in May, January-May shipments dropped 3.5% to 67.783 mln barrels, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their July report.

Germany reported an increase of 2.5% in its May beer sales, volumes of the first five months of the year grew 1.2% to 37.7 mln hl.

The exceptional warm weather during spring in Europe and the World Football Cup have a positive effect on beer sales in several countries, although they may also end abruptly with the elimination of any teams (like Germany, Spain, Poland) from beer-drinking countries.

In June production and transport capacities of many maltsters and brewers ran at maximum capacities, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported.

Barley news Canada & USA: Crop prospects reported as controversial this year
In North America crop prospects are controversial. On one hand “bin-buster crops of all grains and soybeans” are possible, on the other hand there is apprehension about heat and dryness through July and August, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their latest report on July 3.

Corn and bean fields too are impacted by incessant rains in the northern Midwest, changing whole tracts of land into lakes.

Canada has planted 6.499 mln acres of barley vs. 5.766 last year. The yield forecast is lower, the expected crop 8.75 mln vs. 7.9 mln tonnes in 2017.

Canadian barley exports in Aug/May 17/18 were 1.73 mln tonnes, of which 1.573 mln to China. Export business has fallen still since a few months. The Canadian feed demand will absorb a large crop easily, the percentage of malting barley will only be known after harvest.

NASS/USDA announced a U.S. barley acreage of 2.55 mln acres, 2.7% larger than last year, but even 11.5% larger than an earlier forecast for this year’s crop. Was it the better world market or the threatening short supply for U.S. maltsters, which changed farmers‘ minds before planting?

Brewery news Canada, BC: Howl Brewing already open in North Saanich
A year-round farm market, bakery, and bistro in North Saanich is now also home to one of British Columbia’s newest small breweries, the Canadian Beer News reported on July 16.

Howl Brewing opened in late June at Fickle Fig Farm Market, with brewer Danny Van Netten creating beers using hops and other produce grown on the farm.

Beers available since opening have included Lands End IPA, Blackberry Wheat Ale, and Strawberry Wheat Ale.

Brewery news USA, CT: Charter Oak Brewing opens permanent headquarters and brewing facility in Danbury
Charter Oak Brewing has officially opened its permanent headquarters at 39B Shelter Rock Road in Danbury. The 10,000-square-foot facility includes a 20-barrel brewing system as well as a pilot five-barrel system, selected by Charter Oak’s owner and brewmaster P. Scott Vallely, the Westfair Online reported on July 16.

Vallely will be joined by Mike Granoth to assist with brewing and operations. Both are recent graduates of the Science and Engineering program at the American Brewer’s Guild in Middlebury, Vermont.

The operation has a capacity of nearly 4,000 barrels and space to grow to over 25,000 barrels. The Danbury location also has a taproom with 10 rotating draft lines and offers cask-conditioned beer as well; it is open to the public Thursdays to Sundays.

Vallely said that Charter Oak is currently focused on the Connecticut craft beer market but has plans to expand its distribution to the neighboring states of Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

Brewery news USA, ME: Bissell Brothers Three Rivers opens second brewing location in Milo
Milo natives Noah and Peter Bissell just couldn't stay away from the place they called home, WABI reported on July 13.

Peter says, "It's very special. It had to be here if we were going to do it. And if it is five people in the door or five hundred, we are going to do it. It does not matter. It was the right thing to do, and it is nice to come to that point. We are not done by any means, but the public aspect is the last piece of the puzzle."

They started their journey back in 2013 when they opened a brewery, Bissell Brothers, in Portland which they call their second home.

When they decided to open a second brewing location, they knew it had to be in Milo.

The new location, called Bissell Brothers Three Rivers, had its grand opening on July 14.

He says, "Tap room culture, I can't stress enough, it is different than bars. It is very close, but it's a different animal. Family should feel welcome."

Noah, Peter, and the rest of their crew have been working hard to get the beer ready and a quality area to enjoy it.

He says, "Noah and the brew team have ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev moves craft beer portfolio into standalone business
Anheuser-Busch InBev has moved its US craft beer portfolio into a standalone business unit as part of a shake-up of its High End division, the company announced.

The new unit houses all 12 of A-B InBev's North American craft beer brands, including Goose Island, 10 Barrel Brewing and Elysian Brewing Co. The unit is led by Felipe Szpigel, head of the High End since it was set up in 2014.

Meanwhile, sales and marketing for The High End's non-craft brands, which include Stella Artois, Estrella Jalisco and Shock Top, have moved to AB InBev's core US sales and marketing team. At the same time, dedicated sales and marketing resources have been given to the brewer's 'Beyond Beer' segment, which includes non-alcoholic drinks such as Teavana and flavoured malt beverages such as Lime-a-Rita and SpikedSeltzer.

Announcing the changes last week, Anheuser-Busch, the US unit of AB InBev, said: "[This] is an important step to better align our commercial structure with our new long-term business strategy, specifically as it relates to premiumisation and innovation.

"We are encouraged by the early signs of growth that have been reported, and believe this new structure offers us the best opportunity to build on the momentum."

Brewery news USA, GA: Southern Sky Brewing Company announces closure
Southern Sky Brewing Company has announced they have closed their doors, the Beer Street Journal reported on July 16.

Georgia Tech graduate Jon Near founded the brewery three years ago in Kennesaw, Georgia. Sources close to Southern Sky state the brewery was at constant odds with their distributor, Empire Distributors, over product placement at events in the weeks leading up to this announcement.

Incidentally, Beer Street Journal could only find one mention of Southern Sky on the brewery’s website – a single link back to the brewery’s website. There is no mention of Southern Sky’s beer portfolio.

The brewery’s equipment is currently available for sale.

In late spring, Abbey of the Holy Goats, a Belgian inspired brewery based in Roswell, Georgia also closed their doors and offered their equipment on industry site ProBrewer.com.

Brewery news UK: Craft beer keeps momentum in the UK
The craft beer boom has kept up momentum in the UK in the last 12 months, new data has shown.

A record £135 mln was spent in the category in the year to June, up 47 per cent from last year's total of £92 mln, according to Kantar Worldpanel.

This was on par with the 47 per cent increase in consumption recorded last year, when the boom got into full swing.

Growth in the category has accelerated swiftly since 2015, when spending rose just 13.5 per cent to £46 mln.

More people are now going hopping mad for the craze, not only spending more on specialist beers but drinking higher volumes too.

Over the past 12 months, British drinkers consumed 38 mln litres of craft beer, up 52 per cent on the year.

The fast-growing sector has become a target for more established companies, which are now snapping up British breweries.

Most recently, Beavertown sold a stake to Heineken to fund a new £40 mln brewery. Other notable sales include Camden Town Brewery to AB InBev, and London Fields Brewery to Carlsberg.

Meantime was also sold to AB InBev, but later sold on to Asahi.

Commenting on the fresh data, Meantime general manager Laura Edwards said: "As industry sales ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Heineken seeking to remove Vijay Mallya from United Breweries’ board
Dutch brewing giant Heineken is seeking to remove Vijay Mallya from the board of India’s United Breweries (UB), according to reports from Delhi.

Heineken is the majority owner of India’s biggest brewer, but when Mallya sold his stake to the Dutch group, he was given an agreement that appointed him as chairman for life and a non-retiring director who did not need to offer himself to other shareholders for periodic re-election.

As part of the proceedings in India against the fugitive Mallya, the country’s Economic Directorate has appropriated his shares in United Breweries to recover some the £1.15 billion he owes a consortium of banks.

Heineken is reported to be taking legal opinion on whether, because he now formally holds no shares in UB, its agreement with Mallya is null and void and that it is legally entitled to nominate a new chairman for the brewer.

Mallya has previously been barred from holding any executive office in a company quoted on the Indian stock markets.

The next hearing on whether Mallya should be extradited from the UK to India will take place in London in two weeks’ time.

Brewery news China: Customs officials seize US$10 mln worth of smuggled beer
Customs officials in Ningbo city in eastern China have raided a cross-city beer smuggling ring that led to the discovery of smuggled beer exceeding RMB 70 million (US$10.46 million) in value, the biggest smuggled beer bust in years, the Drinks Business reported on July 16.

The bust happened at the same time as the World Cup when demand for beer in China saw a sharp increase from football fans watching the games.

Furthermore, earlier this year the leading brewers in mainland China including Snow, Yanjing, and Tsingtao raised their prices for both bottled and canned beers as a result of growing labour costs and rising cost of raw materials. The price rise was between 10% and 20%, according to Chinese media reports.

According to the statement posted on General Administration of Customs, a Fujian-based company in southern China has found to be deliberately under declaring their imported beers including brands such as Heineken and Belgium’s Rochefort, and selling imported beers in cities in Zhejiang, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Twelve suspects in relation to the case have been arrested, according to the administration. In China, suspects charged with smuggling can be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, and fined for as much as five ...More info on site
