The Danish brewer Carlsberg A/S’s Board of Directors has elected Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen as its new board chairman in succession to Poul Chr. Matthiesen who has retired. Krogsgaard-Larsen (61) is a university Professor in pharmacy, D.Sc..,Ph.D.,Dr.h.c. The company also named Jens Bigum, Managing Director, as Deputy Chairman

Matthiesen's retirement had been widely expected. The selection of a university academic was also no surprise as it is traditional at Carlsberg to have an academic as its chairman. Matthiesen himself is an economics professor. However, the chairman at Carlsberg does not have day-to-day responsibilities at the brewer and the post is seen as largely honorary.
