Ukraine may import more caramel malt in 2003, the Ukrainian analysts reported. According to Galina Korenikova, the assistant director of ZAO “Ukrpivo”, Ukraine doesn’t produce caramel malt but its demand comes up to 8-9 thousand tons per annum. As the request for dark beer went up this year, a rise of its production is forecasted, that will drive to a rise of caramel malt import, Galina Korenikova said.

The import of barley malt will remain at the same level – of about 50 thousand ton. However analysts predict a poor crop of barley while 350 thousand tons of barley are necessary to produce the needed malt at a medium harvest of 10 million tons.

In 2002 Ukraine produced about 173.301 thousand tons of malt – 20.5 thousand tons more than in 2001.
