From May 1, 2003 the tax on the low-malt beer “happoshu” will be increased by Y20.47 per 350ml if the proposal of the Japan’s Ministry of Finance is accepted.

The Tax System Research Commission of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party intends to raise the taxes on happoshu, wine and some other alcoholic beverages, which currently have lower tax rates than beer and sake. However, the planned tax increases have met strong opposition from the drinks industry.
