E-Malt.com News article: Canada: Malting barley quality very good despite weather challenges
Barley news

Despite the challenges experienced during the growing season and harvest, the overall quality of
Western Canada’s 2018 malting barley crop is very good, CMBTC reported on November 8.

While there has been a wide range of protein reported this year, the average protein content of 2018 crop samples received at the CMBTC has been higher for all three main malting barley varieties (AC Metcalfe, CDC Copeland and AAC Synergy) than the past two years.

The 2018 crop samples of AC Metcalfe, CDC Copeland and AAC Synergy all showed very good germination energy. The also displayed lighter water sensitivity and higher rapid visco analysis (RVA) values than recorded last year. The lighter water sensitivity may simplify steep cycles in process, and high RVA values suggest good storability for 2018 crop.
