E-Malt.com News article: Europe: Croatia joins The Brewers of Europe
Brewery news

The Brewers of Europe announced on January, 10 the General Assembly’s approval of Croatia’s membership, from 1st January 2012, of The Brewers of Europe.

The Beer, Malt and Hops Manufacturers Group of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce thus becomes the 28th member of The Brewers of Europe.

Welcoming the new member, Pierre-Olivier Bergeron, Secretary General of The Brewers of Europe said: “We are delighted that yet another European brewing country has decided to join The Brewers of Europe and all our members look forward to working together with them to face the challenges with which the whole sector is confronted.”

Beer in Croatia, particularly through its café culture, is the country’s most popular alcoholic beverage. Croatia’s fifteen breweries produce around 3.5 million hectolitres of beer annually. Whilst the Croatian brewing sector has not been immune from the hit on the European brewing sector during the last few years of the economic crisis, with declines in both production and consumption, Croatian beer still creates over 27,000 jobs and an estimated €350 million of value-added per year, according to Ernst & Young’s 2011 report on the Contribution made by Beer to the European Economy
