Canada: The application deadline for the Barley Development Council's 2003 malting barley quality competition is October 31, The Western Producer published on October 6. The Barley Development Council is holding their eighth annual Malting Barley Quality Competition to recognize western Canadian farmers who grow top quality two-row and six-row malting barley.

Farmers are eligible if they grow two-row or six-row malting barley varieties from the Canadian Malting and Brewing Technical Centre's 2003-04 recommended list and if their malting barley is selected by Oct. 10.

A representative sample of about half a kilogram or four cups must be appropriately packaged and sent with an entry form to the Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute's Winnipeg office, which must receive it by Oct. 31. Farmers will receive an entry form and instructions with the malting barley selection contract confirmation letter they receive from the Canadian Wheat Board.

Entry forms are also available from competition sponsors, malting barley selectors and CWB farm business representatives.

Commercial malting barley selectors will judge two- and six-row malting barley entries submitted from each crop district.

Winning district entries will then be judged to select provincial winners, and an overall grand champion. District and provincial winners will be announced in November.

District winners will get an expense-paid trip for two to Regina to attend a program held in conjunction with Canadian Western Agribition in Regina on Nov. 23-24. Provincial winners will go on a second expense-paid trip in early 2004.
With better weather this year, the council and the competition's sponsors hope to see more samples submitted.

"Please don't prejudge your sample," said institute president Erin Armstrong. "Let the judging panel do the judging."
