E-Malt.com News article: India: United Breweries tax bill slashed 94% in major win
Brewery news

United Breweries Limited has secured a significant victory in a tax litigation case, with its earlier confirmed tax demand and penalty drastically reduced. The company announced that a demand and penalty totaling ₹29,00,048 has been cut to ₹1,85,878, representing a reduction of over 94%, Whalesbook reported on April 25.

This substantial reduction eases a potential financial burden for the company and marks a positive development in its ongoing tax litigation.

United Breweries has navigated several significant tax disputes in recent years. In 2023, it faced a ₹1,136 crore tax demand from the Directorate General of GST Intelligence. More recently, the company disclosed a ₹31.88 crore GST demand in March 2026 and a ₹22.50 crore demand from Maharashtra authorities in April 2026. Adding to these challenges, the Supreme Court dismissed the company's appeals in March 2026 concerning a long-standing tax dispute.

While the immediate financial liability for this specific case is now minimal at ₹1.86 lakh in penalties, the matter is not fully resolved. United Breweries plans to file a further appeal against the residual demand before the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) seeking additional relief. Investors will track the outcome of this appeal, as well as any further developments on other significant tax demands faced by the company.

Operating in India's competitive beer market alongside peers such as Carlsberg India and Anheuser-Busch InBev, United Breweries, like all sector players, faces stringent tax regulations and compliance requirements across various states.
