Brewery news

The small-craft brewery of Bullmastiff, based in Cardiff, has won the Champion Beer of Wales competition, organised by CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, with their Son of a Bitch beer, CAMRA has recently communicated.

Against fierce competition from over 100 real ales now brewed in Wales, Bullmastiff Brewery has proved to be the top dog amongst Welsh breweries. The brewery was founded in 1987 by brewing brothers and former milkmen, Bob & Paul Jenkins.

“It’s been a pintas to pints story for us”, said a jubilant Bob Jenkins on hearing the news of the award. “We’ve always set out to brew good beers and having an accolade like this from CAMRA just goes to prove that drinkers want good hoppy ales brewed in the traditional manner. I only brew beers that I like to drink myself so it’s great to be recognised for having good taste”.

The Champion Beer of Wales competition was held at the Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival in Cardiff City Hall on Friday December 2nd. During the course of the festival over 4000 people are expected to attend the biggest beer festival in Wales.

One of the judges, Alun Cairns Welsh Assembly Member for South Wales, said: “Judging the Champion Beer of Wales competition was one of the most enjoyable jobs I have ever done. All the beers in the competition were of exceptionally high quality and it proved an interesting and difficult challenge to decide the best. In the end though it was a unanimous decision by all the judges that Bullmastiff Son of a Bitch was the best beer there.

According to James Daley, CAMRA Regional Director for South & Mid-Wales: “It’s a great accolade for the brewing brothers and I know that a few pints of Son of a Bitch will be drunk tonight in celebration of Bullmastiff Brewery winning Champion Beer of Wales. Bob and Paul put a lot of hard work into their brewery and it’s an honour for CAMRA to be able to award them this accolade”.

The Silver award in the Champion Beer of Wales competition went to Tomos Watkin Brewery of Swansea for their Merlin Stout and the Bronze award went to Bryncelyn Brewery of Ystalyfera.
