E-Malt.com News article: UK: British brewers continue to lead battle on carbon emissions

The British Beer & Pub Association communicated on July 27 that energy use per pint of beer produced has fallen by 47 per cent since 1976 as British brewers lead the battle against carbon emissions, increasing energy savings and exceeding Government set targets. In the first two milestone periods of British Industry’s Climate Change Agreement (CCA), the Brewing sector achieved double its energy saving target and reduced CO2 emissions by 13.9 per cent.

“The Brewing Industry has been leading on environmental issues for many years,” said Dr David Long, Director of Brewing of the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), “setting up our own voluntary industry scheme to improve energy performance in 1976. The significant overachievement of our CCA targets reinforces the industry’s commitment to meeting our environmental responsibilities and helping the UK Government reduce carbon emissions.”

The sector over-achieved against its target by 55,915 tonnes of C02 equivalent or £110,000 at current emission trading prices. As a result of this success the sector has now been re-certified for the 80% discount on the Climate Change Levy for a further two years (April 2005 to March 2007). This equates to a saving of £8 million to BBPA members.

The British Beer and Pub Association is the UK’s leading organisation representing the brewing and pub sector. Its members account for 98% of the beer brewed in the UK and own nearly two thirds of Britain’s 59,000 pubs.

BBPA was the first trade association to establish a trading agreement with the Government under its Climate Change Agreement and the first trade body in the UK to achieve Greenhouse Gas Emissions verification from BSI Management Systems for exceeding its energy-saving targets.

BBPA established a voluntary benchmarking scheme for the brewing industry in 1976 to improve energy performance.
