E-Malt.com News article: UK: The northern England Barnsley brewery named its latest beer after Dickie Bird

The northern England Barnsley brewery announced on May 23 it has started distributing the new beer named after retired cricket umpire Dickie Bird, who usually does not touch the stuff. Acorn Brewery, based in Bird's home town of Barnsley, said it decided to make "Dickie's Brew" for the benefit of the famous umpire's sports development charity.

The Dickie Bird Foundation will receive a donation for each pint sold. The brewery said the new beer, would suit drinkers who liked lager or traditional English beers. "It is a slightly sweet malt and has a lively aroma," said Dave Hughes, head brewer and proprietor. "We hope to distribute it nationwide."

The 72-year-old Bird said he found the new brew quite strong. "It is a very good drink. I usually drink red wine but I do enjoy the odd beer," he told Reuters. "But it is nice to have a beer named after me."
