Republic of Moldova: Moldova exported about 286 thousand litres of beer during January-August 2004, that is 20% increase versus the same period last year.

Nowadays the beer market capacity in Moldova is appreciated at US$ 6.5 million. 75% of the beer market is held by Chisinau based brewery Efes-Vitanta, owned by Efes Breweries International B.V. 10% of the market is controlled by the rest of the breweries and 15% is held by import beers.

On September 22, e-malt.com posted that in Moldova prices for foreign beer might increase. Excises on beer imported to Moldova from countries, which are not World Trade Organization (WTO) members could be increased 4-5-fold soon, according to amendments to the Tax Code approved by the Moldovan Government. The Government has proposed to set a new excise on beer at 10 lei (USD 0.80) per litre. Moldovan Minister of Economy Marian Lupu says that with such excises, the produce coming from the third countries will be placed in equal conditions with alcoholic produce exported to external markets.
