Brewery news

Craft brewer Alpha Brewing will close its downtown St. Louis brewery next month and reopen in a larger building in the city’s Tower Grove South neighbourhood, STLtoday.com reported on November 28.

Alpha’s new taproom, restaurant and beer garden with seating for about 300 people will open at 4310 Fyler Avenue in mid-February, the brewer said.

A 10,000-square-foot building next door will house Alpha’s production facility. Alpha acquired the property this year.

Alpha’s downtown brewery, in leased space at 1409 Washington Avenue, opened in 2013. The brewery makes about 200 barrels a year in a 2.5-barrel system.

“The downtown location is going to be closing at the end of the year,” Derrick Langeneckert, Alpha’s owner and head brewer, said.

“I love downtown and wish we could stay,” he said, adding he’s hopeful to someday open a satellite location downtown.

Alpha is spending more than $2 million on the new facility. With the extra space, Alpha will have the capacity to produce 3,000 barrels annually, and Langeneckert said his goal is to make 1,000 barrels in the Fyler building’s first year.

“We love the space and the Tower Grove South neighborhood,” Langeneckert said, adding the availability of parking and the ability to have a kitchen drew him to the property.

Alpha has three employees, and the company plans to expand to at least 10 once the new location opens, Langeneckert said.
