A Charlottesville-based craft brewing company is planning to open a small brewery in Richmond next year that will emphasize what one of its co-owners says will be “collaborative” local beers, Charlottesville Business Journal reported on December 9.

Three Notch’d Brewing Co. says its location in Scott’s Addition will serve its best-known brands and have regular tasting hours, but it will focus on customized, small-batch beers made for restaurants in the area, and craft beers made specifically for community events and philanthropic fundraisers.

“We really want to focus on the community,” said Scott Roth, president and co-founder of Three Notch’d, which has signed a lease to take 4,000 square feet of space in the 2900 block of West Broad Street in Scott’s Addition.

The company is planning to renovate the space to house a small brewing production system and a tasting room that could host events. The goal is to open in the second quarter of 2016.

“The focus is going to be on doing as many collaborations as we can with restaurants and community groups, charities and home brewers,” Roth said.

Three Notch’d opened its first brewery in Charlottesville in 2013 and expanded with a second location in Harrisonburg in 2014. The company was co-founded by Roth, George Kastendike, and Derek Naughton. Its founding head brewer is Dave Warwick.

Roth said Scott’s Addition is a good location for the company’s Richmond expansion because the neighborhood is undergoing a renaissance of new businesses, restaurants and craft beverage makers.

It will be a block from acclaimed chef Peter Chang’s planned restaurant in the Hofheimer Building on West Broad Street. Scott’s Addition also is home to other craft beer businesses including Ardent Craft Ales and Isley Brewing Co., while The Veil Brewing Co. plans to open on Roseneath Road.

“There are some really nice restaurants popping up in the area, so it will be a fun place for people to come and have a beer and then go to dinner,” Roth said.

The site will serve the brewery’s flagships beers, which are already being distributed in the Richmond area, including its 40 Mile IPA, Ghost Pale Ale and Hydraulion Red Ale.

A major emphasis, however, will be on producing the small batch beers with a local flair.

“We really like the idea of having a few of these tasting rooms that are not only places we can use to bring a local feel to the product, but also to create some really unique beers that you won’t have anywhere else,” Roth said.

He said the Richmond brewery will employ at least 10 people and perhaps up to 20 eventually.

The brewery will be located in the same building as Gather, a co-working space owned by Dodson Property Management.

The building is being redeveloped by Duke Dodson of Dodson Property Management, Andy Beach with UrbanCore Construction, and Doug and Polly White with Whitestone Partners.
