Brewery news

Bozeman’s fifth microbrewery formally opened its doors to the public on July 22, a business built quite literally from repurposed pieces of the city’s heritage, The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported.

“Just about every piece of wood in here came out of the building when we did the demo,” said White Dog Brewing co-owner Joe Moore.

“The brewery’s custom-made bar also includes bricks from the old Lehrkind’s Brewery wall,“ Moore said — a nod to Bozeman’s brewing heritage.

According to city lore, Bozeman brewing pioneer Julius Lehrkind bought out what was probably the city’s initial Main Street brewery, Spieth and Krug, in the late 1800s.

The 12,000-square-foot building, the largest in the city until the construction of the Montana State University Fieldhouse in 1957, churned out 40,000 barrels of lager beer a year at its peak.

“The establishment’s name,” Moore said, “was inspired by a combination of a slang term for alcohol and a rather mellow white Lab hanging out behind the bar” one of several pups inside the dog-friendly establishment as it began to fill with thirsty patrons.
