Brewery news

Copper Point Brewing’s opening in Boynton Beach auspiciously coincides with the start of American Craft Beer Week, Palm Beach Post reports on May 7.

It has been more than five years since Matt Cox left Big Bear Brewing, a brew pub in Coral Springs where he won one of Florida’s first gold medals in brewing at the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado. Now, Cox, 39, gets to own and run a brewery for the first time.

Copper Point is the seventh full-fledged brewery in Palm Beach County, Florida and the third to open this year.

Cox met investor and beer lover Al Lettera. Together, they scouted South Florida sites until the city of Boynton Beach opened their arms to them.

The city’s economic development department helped them apply for three grants - including a federal job-creating grant - totalling $127,000.

It wasn’t without its share of headaches, and not just the federal grant that took a year to be approved. They were sued by Tampa’s Coppertail Brewing, who alleged their original name, Coppertop, would cause confusion.

But the brewery retains the original spirit, if not the name. It was inspired by Cox’s wife, Laura, a redhead whom he has known since they were at Olympic Heights Community High School together.

“We love to work with local people who have the same passion for their craft as we do,” Cox said.

It’s that attention to detail Cox hopes will make his brewery a runaway success, if not his defunct bartending career.
