Brewery news

The recently formed Bond Brothers Beer Company is expected to sell beer from the tap at 202 E. Cedar St. - off East Chatham Street, Cary - next spring, News & Observer reported on May 6.

A group of local home brewers has partnered with a Cary developer to open a bar and brewery in downtown Cary. They hope to open their first commercial operation off East Chatham Street in spring 2016.

Northwoods Associates LP is leasing and renovating the space, most recently used as a carpet distribution warehouse, as part of a $5 million project known as Midtown Square. The project, announced in February, also includes a new 25,000-square-foot office building next door.

The Bond Brothers Beer Company space will include a 4,600-square-foot brewing area; a 2,300-square-foot tap room; and 3,000 square feet of outdoor space for a beer garden.

Bond Brothers Beer Company was founded by the twin brothers Jay Bond and Jeremy Bond as well as Andy Schnitzer and Whit Baker. Schnitzer said the group hopes to begin renovation efforts this summer and open for business next spring.

While the brewery is the first commercial beer venture for the Bond brothers, they’re no strangers to the local brewing scene.

The 39-year-old brothers and Baker have been brewing small batches for personal use out of a shed at Jeremy Bond’s Raleigh home for the past four years. In that time, they entered and won awards at numerous brewing competitions.

“The group has been recognized 25 times at eight competitions since 2012,” Schnitzer said.

“That success is part of the reason Northwoods chose to partner with Bond Brothers,” said Jordan Gussenhoven, co-owner of Chatham Street Commercial, which is part of Northwoods Associates. George H. Jordan III Development Co., owned by Gussenhoven’s uncle, George Jordan, is the other partner.

“We’re going by the quality of their beer and their commitment to making a diverse selection of beers,” Gussenhoven said.

The company plans to ultimately produce a little more than 1,400 barrels a year, mostly for consumption at the brewery.

The company’s production goal, considered relatively small in the commercial brewing community, gives the company an opportunity to brew more often and keep things fresh, Schnitzer said of their 10-barrel system.

The Bond Brothers group was attracted to downtown Cary because of the area’s promise and the town’s commitment to revitalizing the area.

Cary spent $6 million to open The Cary - a theatre with office spaces – last year on Chatham Street. The town spent $225,000 to renovate a space next to the theatre, where Pharmacy Bottle and Beverage opened its craft beer bar and shop in March.

Cary also plans to spend $6 million to update Academy Street and another $3.7 million on a park less than a mile away from the Bond Brothers site.

Bond Brothers Brewing Company is expected to be the second brewer to open near downtown Cary area since 2014.

Fortnight Brewing Company opened in February 2014 at 1006 Southwest Maynard Road, Cary - about 1.7 miles away from the Bond Brothers site.

Schnitzer and the Bond brothers, who often participate in a run club that meets at Fortnight, foresee the breweries benefiting from each other. Schnitzer said he envisioned people going on beer hops between Fortnight, Pharmacy Bottle and Beverage and Bond Brothers.

“We’re very artistic people, so it’s very exciting to be able to create ... inventive brews that are steeped in tradition,” Jay Bond said.
