Brewery news

It's about to get a whole lot busier for Philipsburg Brewing Company this summer as they aim to get their beer in the hands of more Montanans. The business is just over two years old and is getting ready to open a second brewery in its namesake town, reported NBC Montana on April 1st.

Six months ago Cathy Smith and the other owners of Philipsburg Brewing began to think about expansion. They bought the abandoned Philipsburg water bottling plant in the hills above downtown.

Fittingly, the plant was built on the site of the original Philipsburg Brewery, which shut down in the 1920s thanks to prohibition.

Smith plans for the brewery to start production in August. This will let the company to produce 4,000 barrels of beer each year - four times as much as they do now. With the new plant, Smith hopes to have more than 50 locations start carrying Philipsburg Brewing Company beer this summer.

Thanks to a grant from the Montana Department of Agriculture, the company will be bottling beer for sale in grocery and convenience stores for the first time.
