Brewery news

Craft brewer Battle Road Brewing Co. is partnering with restaurant group Whole House Group to open a brewery and brew pub in Maynard, a facility that will allow the contract brewer to expand production tenfold, Boston Business Journal reported on March 12.

Jeremy Cross and Scott Houghton started the brewery in 2012 and have since created four brews: the flagship 1775 Tavern Ale, Barrett's Farmhouse Ale, Lexington Green East IPA and Midnight Rider Porter.

Cross and Houghton run the contract brewing business out of the Ipswich Ale Brewery and last year brewed 500 barrels. The new Maynard brewery and brew pub will include a 30-barrel brewing system, which will allow Battle Road to expand its production to 5,000 barrels per year.

The facility is set to open this fall, with the brew pub employing between 30 and 40 and the brewery employing up to 10 workers.

The brewery and brew pub will be located in a 12,000-square-foot former office space in Maynard's historic Clock Tower Mill, for which Battle Road has signed a 10-year lease and has another 10-year option. The property will include seating for between 50 and 75 patrons as well as a traditional outdoor beer garden overlooking Mill Pond.

Harvard-based Maugel Architects Inc. is the project's architect.

Whole House Group is a hospitality and restaurant group founded in 2013 by managing partners Greg Hill and Chris Stephans. It operates the Italian-influenced 29 Sudbury restaurant located west of Boston and is planning three additional restaurant concepts: The West Concord Beef Co. in West Concord, Flank: The New American Beefsteak in Waltham and the Battle Road brew pub.

"To me, the Mill was the ideal location for Battle Road Brewery & Brew Pub all along," Hill said in a prepared statement. "The brick and post & beam architecture lends itself to creating a beautiful brew pub.... As soon as the Mill's new ownership came on board, they made the Battle Road Brewery and Brew Pub a priority, and we were able to get a deal done in days. We couldn't be more excited about brewing our beer, and serving it, in Maynard for years to come."

The partnership with Whole House Group will allow Battle Road to expand its distribution into those restaurant concepts, as well as expand distribution to retail liquor stores across Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
