Corning's popular brewpub, Market Street Brewing Company, has something special on tap for its customers, TWC News reported on May 19.

“We've been here for 17 years, and we know what people like and it was time to take to step,” said Pelham McClellan, brewer and co-owner of Market Street Brewing Company.

The owners of Market Street Brewing Company, in a joint venture with two other friends, are opening a new microbrewery in the city. The Iron Flamingo will feature three of the brewpubs flagship beers. The owners say they've had a hard time keeping up with the high demand for their specialty beers at their current location.

“We have a seven barrel system which means we produce a little under 200 gallons of beer. In the summertime, we'll go through that within two to three weeks,” said McClellan.

The Iron Flamingo adds to a growing list of microbreweries in the region. There were about 24 microbreweries in the Finger Lakes region in 2011. That number has nearly tripled since then. Statewide, the number of microbreweries has gone from 85 to 154 in the last two years, contributing to overall economic impact of more than $2.2 billion annually.

The New York State Brewers Association says farm brewery legislation has played a role in the surge. The law encourages producers to use homegrown ingredients and exempts some from annual fees.

“Governor Cuomo and his policies and his vision have really helped us to really grow in this state. He's made it a craft-friendly state,” said Paul Leone, the executive director of the New York State Brewers Association.

Not only will customers at Market Street Brewing be able to get some of their favorites at the Iron Flamingo, but they’ll have something else to look forward to.

“We’re also going to use this as a pilot brewery where we can try new recipes,” said McClellan.

The Iron Flamingo Brewery is expected to open this summer.
