SABMiller plc announced on February, 8 that Professor Barry Axcell, Group Chief Brewer, will retire from the company at the end of July 2012 after almost 35 years of service with the company.

Axcell will be succeeded by Professor Katherine Smart as Group Chief Brewer effective 1 June 2012. Smart is the current SABMiller Professor of Brewing Science and the Head of the School of Biosciences at The University of Nottingham.

Katherine Smarth, a well-respected academic, has held this post for seven years and founded Brewing Science at the University offering research programs in malting, yeast genomics, fermentation and flavour. Barry Axcell and Katherine Smart also developed the MSc in Brewing Science.

SABMiller plc is one of the world's largest brewers with brewing interests and distribution agreements across six continents. The group's wide portfolio of brands includes premium international beers such as Pilsner Urquell, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Miller Genuine Draft and Grolsch, as well as leading local brands such as Aguila, Castle, Miller Lite, Snow and Tyskie.

In the year ended 31 March 2010, the group reported US$3,803 million adjusted pre-tax profit and group revenue of US$26,350 million. SABMiller plc is listed on the London and Johannesburg stock exchanges.
