Peru's renowned beer Cusqueña will be launched in South Korea and Australia this year, LivingInPeru cited Richard Gallagher, Exports Director of Cervecerías Peruanas Backus y Johnston, on January, 12.

Mr. Gallagher said Peru’s No. 1 brewer was looking to reach a final agreement with subsidiaries of SABMiller in both countries.

“On short-term we will begin exporting to South Korea,” said Mr. Gallagher.

South Korea has a per capita beer consumption of 80 to 100 litres yearly and a potential market of nearly 50 million of consumers, he said.

In Australia’s case, he said exports should starts by the end of 2011 or early 2012.

“It is a potential market of 25 million people with a per capita consumption exceeding a hundred 100 litres yearly,” he pointed out.

Backus main export markets are United Kingdom, United States, Chile, Spain and Japan.

“Brazil is an interesting market which we would like to enter, but it requires research to find somebody interested in our brand,” said Gallagher.

He said Latin America had a limited import market compared to, for example, United States, where imported beers represent 15 percent of the whole market.

“In South America, beer import represents 0.5 percent of the market,” Gallagher said.
