E-Malt.com News article: Mozambique: SABMiller’s subsidiary inaugurates new brewery, considers malthouse
Brewery news

Mozambican President Armando Guebuza on May, 18 inaugurated a new brewery in the northern city of Nampula, that will supply beer for all the provinces north of the Zambezi river, All Africa reported last week.

This is the third brewery owned by Cervejas de Mocambique (CDM - Beers of Mozambique) which is the Mozambican subsidiary of SABMiller. The other breweries are in Maputo and Beira.

Up until now, the north of the country has obtained its beer from Beira, by road or ship, and the transport costs have added greatly to the final cost of the product. During the festive season, the northern provinces have often run out of Mozambican beer, and shortages have inevitably led to hoarding and speculation.

The brewery, built from scratch on 20 hectares of land on the outskirts of the city, at the cost of 69 million US dollars, has the capacity to produce 7.4 million crates of beer a year, the equivalent of 480,000 hectolitres. It will produce all three Mozambican brands of beer (2M, Laurentina and Manica).

According to the chairperson of the CDM board, Isidora Faztudo, the company plans to invest in the local production of malt, which will reduce its import costs. Studies are under way on the viability of producing malt in Manica province.
