Brewery news

The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) has expressed mixed feelings at the news that Marston's has acquired the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, The Publican reported July 17.

“Local breweries, which have sprung up in increasing numbers over the past 30 years, are proving that there is demand for good-quality, locally brewed cask ale and innovative bottled beers”, Peter Amor, chairman of SIBA, said.

“Some of the bigger brewing companies are looking at these developments with what might be one of two options – to snap up efficient, profitable local breweries to increase their brewing capacity and distribution, or to close them down to reduce competition.

“Ringwood was one of the first microbreweries in the country and was one of the founder members of SIBA in 1980. Over the years, it has grown into a formidable business, equal in output to some of the long-established local and regional brewers.

“It has been a huge success story and we hope that Marston's will stand by their promise to keep the brewery running.”
