Advances in hop aroma research - how much do we know today, oral lecture at EBC 2013 Luxembourg

ABSTRACT
Though we have a basic understanding about which components can be attributable to floral, citrus, fruity, spicy, herbal and woody flavours, the very unique aromas of hoppy beers cannot be fully explained. The challenge is to understand aroma interactions, the release of aroma components by yeast, the formation of aroma active thiols and our personal perception of volatiles. So there are enough questions on hop aroma to look well into in the future.

Brewery news World: AB InBev adopts new series of aggressive five-year environmental goals
The world's biggest beer brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev has adopted an aggressive series of five-year environmental goals, calling for further reductions in water and energy consumption and setting its first formal targets for packaging reductions and eco-friendly coolers, GreenBiz.com reported on June, 5.

The seven new commitments come just four months after AB InBev revealed it had surpassed previous three-year commitments for water, energy and waste.

The Belgian-based brewer already has saved enough water to produce about 25 billion cans of AB InBev beverages. Currently, it uses an average of 3.5 hectolitres of water for every hectolitre of production.

Now it is trying to squeeze more from the process: The new five-year goal aims to reach a global average of 3.2 hectolitres of water per hectolitre of production. For those who like to visualize this sort of thing, that works out to the amount of water it would take to fill approximately 5,400 Olympic swimming pools.

The Carterville brewery in Georgia, USA, already has outstripped that goal: It uses just 2.8 hectolitres of water per hectolitre of production.

To move toward that measure in other production facilities, the company is introducing water management measures in each of its key barley growing regions through partnerships with local ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Calorie content and nutritional information labelling for beer and strong alcohol remains optional
Wine, beer and spirits manufacturers may soon have to disclose calorie content and other nutritional information on bottles and cans. But for now, such labeling remains optional, ABC News reported on June, 5.

The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, which is part of the Treasury Department, proposed a labeling rule in 2007 that would require alcoholic beverage manufacturers to include calories, carbohydrates, fat and protein content on their labels, but it has yet to make a decision on whether to implement the rule. It announced last week that manufacturers could add this information if they wanted to.

"What's interesting to me is that the reason why beverage companies want it and consumers want it is totally different," said Sara Bleich, a health policy professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "It's an example of two groups having different goals while having a sweet spot that seems to work for both."

Low-calorie beer manufacturers are hoping the labels will target people trying to lose weight, believing that's a way to boost sales, she said, adding that studies find that middle-income white women were most likely to pay attention to the labels.

And consumers want more information to make educated choices.

Brewery news World: John Manser to continue as acting Chariman at SABMiller while Graham Mackay is on medical leave of absence
British brewer SABMiller Plc's board has granted medical leave of absence to its Chairman, Graham Mackay, for him to focus on his continuing treatment following his brain tumour surgery in April 2013.

For the time being, John Manser, Deputy Chairman, would continue as acting Chairman, SABMiller said earlier this week.

The board would keep the position under review as Mackay's treatment progresses, and an announcement about the future will be made as soon as any definitive decisions are taken, the world’s second-largest brewer said.

Considering John Manser's increased time commitments and responsibilities as acting Chairman, Manser stood down as chairman of the audit committee on June 5, 2013, a year before than originally planned, and retired from the audit and remuneration committees, with Mark Armour succeeding Manser as the audit committee's chairman.

Brewery news EU: Plzenský Prazdroj’s current CEO appointed as SABMiller’s European Commercial Director
Doug Brodman, current CEO and Managing Director of Plzenský Prazdroj, has been appointed as European Commercial Director in the mother company SABMiller, the brewer announced on June, 6.

New CEO and Managing Director of Plzensky Prazdroj, Paolo Lanzarotti will assume his new responsibilities officially from 1 August 2013. After almost four years at the helm of Plzenský Prazdroj, Doug Brodman will leave the post on July to join the European Leadership team of SABMiller as Commercial Director for Europe.

Paolo Lanzarotti has been appointed as CEO and Managing Director of Plzenský Prazdroj and will assume his new responsibilities officially from 1 August 2013. He joined SABMiller in 2005 progressing through a series of Commercial and General Management roles in Italy, India and Slovakia.

With total sales of almost 9.9 million hectolitres in 2012 (including licensed production abroad) and exports to more than 50 countries around the world, Plzenský Prazdroj is a major beer producer in the region and the largest exporter of Czech beer.

Brewery news India: Complaint against SABMiller India rejected by fair trade watchdog
Fair trade watchdog Competition Commission of India has rejected a complaint of alleged anti- competitive practices against beer maker SABMiller India, Economic Times reported on June, 5.

Hyderabad-based Official Beverages, a manufacturer of soda and packaged drinking water, had alleged that SABMiller was abusing its dominant positions besides forming a cartel that hurt the business interests of the complainant.

Rejecting the plea of Official Beverages, which had a franchise pact with SABMiller, CCI said the "dispute between the parties was business/commercial dispute regarding implications of the franchisee agreement".

Observing that there is no prima facie evidence for further investigation on the complaint, the regulator in an order dated May 31 said, "No competition issue arises in this case".

Under the franchise agreement with SABMiller, Official Beverages was to manufacture packaged drinking water, sparkling water and packaged soda with the former's trademark.

The pact, signed in March 2009, was valid for three years, but it was terminated in February 2012. Official Beverages has alleged that terms were completely one sided and favoured the beer maker.

After the pact was terminated, the complainant said that SABMiller along with 12 other clearing and forwarding agents withheld the sale consideration. The 12 entities were ...More info on site
