Belgium: Belgian beer makers nervous about higher production costs and supply chain problems
|
Higher production costs and supply chain problems are putting Belgian beer makers on the brink of a nervous breakdown, as the global economic downturn takes its toll, Euronews reported on June 14.
Companies like the historic Huyghe brewery in Flanders, for example, are starting to run out of bottles.
The lifeline, for now, is the accumulated stocks of bottles that were purchased from a supplier company in Russia. These days, supply has been interrupted and finding alternative suppliers with the capacity to respond in Europe is anything but easy due to the strong concentration that has occurred in the industry in recent years.
According to Alain de Laet, the company's executive director, it only has stocks to last until September.
"Essentially we lack the 33 centilitre APO bottles. I know some producers who work with Steinie bottles and for several of these producers the lack of bottles is also becoming a problem," de Laet told Euronews.
"For us, it is a big problem, because we have an export volume of 87%, which means that the bottles are not returned."

Estonia: Price increases could reach beer this fall
|
Food prices in Estonia have risen rapidly in recent months, but low-alcohol beverages have thus far been spared from a more rapid increase. Energy and cereal price increases will nonetheless reach beer prices this fall, potentially increasing them by up to half, ERR reported on June 14.
Since the reduction of the alcohol excise duty rate in summer 2019, the average price of a half-litre bottle of beer has remained below €1.50. According to Estonian Institute of Economic Research (EKI) data, low-alcohol beer prices fell by 0.7 last year, while the price of strong beer went up 0.6 percent. The average price of a bottle of beer together with bottle deposit and VAT stood at €1.43 in 2020 and €1.44 last year.
According to EKI director Marje Josing, there have been no major changes in trends thus far this year, and prices currently remain stable.
"It's still not worth going to Latvia, as the difference in excise duty rates is minimal and it doesn't pay off economically," Josing explained, referring to the widespread practice from previous years of driving to Latvia to stock up on cheaper alcohol there. "Tourists have not begun arriving yet and they aren't yet taking alcohol with them either.

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation to install a new Chibuku Super plant at its Southerton Brewery
|
Delta Corporation Limited is expected to maintain its growth trajectory in the sorghum beer segment as the beverages giant is looking at installing a new Chibuku Super plant at its Southerton Brewery, The Herald reported on June 9.
This will help enhance production efficiencies and offset the adverse impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which among others, resulted in supply chain disruptions with limited access to rural markets experienced during the year to March 31, 2022.
Already, the existing Chibuku Super lines are producing to capacity.
“A new Chibuku Super plant to be installed at the Southerton brewery is on order,” said chairman Stanford Moyo in a performance update for the year.
During the year, sorghum beer volume in Zimbabwe grew by 43 percent on improved product supply, market pull and the resurgence of returnable scud bottles.
The Zimbabwean economy registered growth in real Gross Domestic Product during 2021, driven by the improved cereals harvest, the cyclical rebound in mineral prices and buoyant housing construction and infrastructure projects together with a surge in diaspora remittances which helped improved disposable incomes.

Kenya: Keroche Breweries shut down by Kenya Revenue Authority once again
|
Keroche Breweries CEO Tabitha Karanja has announced that the company has again been shut down by the Kenya Revenue Authority, the Pulse Live reported on June 14.
In a press conference on June 14, Ms Karanja said that KRA accused the company of violating an earlier agreement to pay tax arrears.
She added that more than 400 workers will be affected by the closure and beer worth Sh350 million could go to waste.
The company has however denied that it defaulted on the tax repayment plan that had been agreed upon.
Earlier in March, Keroche Breweries struck a deal with KRA allowing it to reopen after closure due to tax arrears.
In the agreement, Keroche committed to paying Sh957 million in two years.
The deal saved the company which owes in excess of Sh22 billion in tax arrears from permanently shutting down.
KRA also lifted a notice sent to 36 banks cautioning them against lending the breweries money.
Keroche CEO Tabitha Karanja had raised concern that the firm was on the verge of sending home over 250 workers and pouring alcohol worth over Sh512 million that is currently stored in tanks.

UK: Season-to-date barley exports total 690.3 thousand tonnes
|
UK’s barley exports continue, with April totalling 70.7 thousand tonnes, AHDB reported on June 14. This brings season-to-date exports to 690.3 thousand tonnes.
To reach the full season forecast of 765.0 thousand tonnes, May and June would need to see an average monthly pace of 37.3 thousand. This looks significantly below the 3-year average of 54.3 thousand tonnes for May and 51.7 thousand for June, the agriculture board said.
With the domestic balance of barley already very tight this season will be the smallest balance forecast since 2007/08, AHDB added.

USA, WA: Craft beer drives thirst for hops
|
More than 84.6 million pounds of hops were grown in Washington in 2021, a 14.1% increase over 2020, the Journal of Business reported.
“We were all kind of surprised to see a record crop last year, after the spring heat dome, which hit when the vines were vulnerable,” said Maggie Elliot, science and communications director for the Hop Growers of Washington.
A historic heat wave enveloped the Northwest in June 2021, with temperatures topping 115 degrees, threatening to stunt the crop.
Fortunately, record snowfall in the Cascade Mountains filled the Yakima reservoirs in early June, allowing growers to nurture hops using precise irrigation practices and reducing the impact from the heat wave.
“The aroma varieties took the hardest hit from the heat,” Elliot said.
Aroma hop varieties aren’t as heat tolerant as the alpha varieties, she explained.
Aroma and alpha are the two kinds used to brew beer.
Alpha varieties provide the distinctive bitter bite to beer. Alpha varieties are often processed into extracts used by major brewers.
Aroma varieties contribute to the aromatic depth that craft brewers use to create unique flavor profiles. Aroma hops are often added to the beer near the end of the boiling process, providing the beer with a final layer of finish.
