Brewery news Canada, NS: Nova Scotia's craft brewing industry has frothy outlook
For years, Nova Scotia's craft brewers have heard the market is saturated with too many breweries. Add in the COVID-19 pandemic and it supposedly spelled doom, CBC reported on June 5.

"We have a word for that in the industry," said Brian Titus, the president of Halifax-based Garrison Brewing and the president of the Craft Brewers Association of Nova Scotia.

"It's called: they're wrong. The rumours of saturation and the demise of local craft brewing are much exaggerated."

Two years into a pandemic, only three breweries have shut down in recent years, said Titus. Those shutdowns have been offset by three breweries that opened, something Titus called "really remarkable."

There are around 70 microbreweries in the province, which employ about 1,150 people, according to association statistics.

Sales of Nova Scotia craft beer through the NSLC were up 11.3 per cent to C$6.7 million, according to its latest quarterly financial results.

"I think an industry like this that can weather a two-year-plus pandemic is a pretty good sign of a strong industry," said Titus.

He said the pandemic forced breweries to look at how they do business and make big changes. For some, this included setting up online shops, offering home delivery and diversifying product lines to include ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, NL: Banished Brewing announces release of its first brands
A new brewery that can truly say its beer is “Brewed in Paradise” has announced the release of its first brands, the Canadian Beer News reported on June 6.

Banished Brewing has been co-founded by partners Craig Farewell, Tom Williamson, and Jamie Clarke, and is located in the town of Paradise on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula.

While the brewery itself hasn’t opened to the public yet, a trio of beers – Space Puffin NEIPA (6% abv), NO NO NO NO YES NO Pale Ale (4.5% abv), and Out The Gate Belgian Single (5.3% abv) – are on tap at Brewdock in St. John’s.

Out The Gate will also making an appearance on the guest tap at Port Rexton Brewing, and cans of all three beers plus Paradise Town Guava Sour (5.5% abv) will be available at beer retailers throughout the province starting this week.

Banished Brewing will be opening a brewery retail store and beer garden soon at 9 Maverick Place in Paradise.

Brewery news USA, FL: Where’s Jubes brewpub and restaurants opens in St. Petersburg
Where’s Jubes, a new Australian brewpub and restaurant, opened Thursday, June 2 in downtown St. Petersburg, Yahoo reported.

Except that it’s not really a restaurant just yet. Or, for that matter, a brewpub. But cocktails and a handful of local beers are on tap, the tables are all set up and the bar is open for business.

The rest will follow, sooner or later.

Like many other local restaurateurs grappling with how to open a new business right now, owner Josh Cameron has faced ongoing supply chain lags, permitting and construction setbacks. It doesn’t help that he’s still waiting on a federal brewing license and on a shipment of Australian hops — pivotal in the production of the Aussie-inspired beers central to his new business — that are stuck on a ship at the Port of Los Angeles.

But rather than wait a day (or several months) longer, Cameron is instead launching the business in phases, starting this week.

First up is a craft cocktail bar with beer taps featuring a rotating number of local brews, including selections from Cigar City Brewing, St. Pete Brewing and Coppertail Brewing Co., among others. Though cocktails weren’t a part of the bar’s original plan, they are now and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Untold Brewing expanding its presence in Scituate
In exciting news, popular South Shore brewery, Untold Brewing, is expanding its presence at Derby Street Shops. In addition to its seasonal beer garden, which is now beginning its second season on The Green, Untold Brewing will open a year-round brewery, taproom, and restaurant at the property in Fall 2022. The new location will feature Untold’s full lineup of high-quality ales and lagers, plus new, limited releases. This new concept will also feature a restaurant developed in partnership with Clandestine Kitchen, the award-winning home meal delivery service and private chef catering company launched by Hingham resident, Courtney Doyle, the Hingham Anchor reported on June 2.

Upon opening at Derby Street, Untold’s new location will bring together its popular beer and Clandestine Kitchen’s menu of fresh, healthy meals to guests from the South Shore and beyond. Guests will find over a dozen different beers on tap, some of which will be exclusive to Derby Street, as well as non-alcoholic drinks and a seasonally inspired menu of salads, sandwiches, flatbreads, and small plates all highlighting quality and locally sourced ingredients. The 2,300 square foot space will include a mix of comfortable seating and casual standing room where guests can place orders for drinks ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Blacklist Brewing Co. celebrates opening of new production facility
Blacklist Brewing Co. celebrated the opening of its new downtown production facility and taproom on June 1, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

Representatives from Downtown Duluth's Greater Downtown Council and the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce were on hand for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to officially mark the space, at 206 E. Superior St., open for business.

The popular brewery didn't move far: just one block east from its former location at 120 E. Superior St. "We are committed to this HART District," said Blacklist co-owner Mark Cool, referencing the acronym for Duluth's Historic Arts and Theater District. "We really like it, and so we wanted first and foremost to stay down here."

"To keep them downtown even as they expand is significant," said Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce President Matt Baumgartner. "Coming out of the construction that we had on Superior Street and the pandemic that pulled a lot of people out of the downtown ... it's not lost on me, the financial investment and risk that you have to take on doing something like that."

The ribbon-cutting was a low-key affair, in keeping with the way Blacklist has eased into its new space. After serving its last beer at its former space on ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Buffalo Bill’s Brewery closes after nearly 40 years of business
Buffalo Bill’s Brewery, a Hayward institution touted as being the first brewpub in America, closed at the end of May after nearly 40 years, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on June 2.

Owner Geoff Harries announced the closure on the Buffalo Bill’s Facebook page.

“Sadly, Buffalo Bill’s Brewery is officially closed until the next passing of the mash paddle of this historic and special place,” wrote Harries, who started out as assistant brew master at Bill’s. “Thank you all so much for the support over the years. It has been an incredible and wonderful journey.” He did not immediately respond to a request for further comment.

Buffalo Bill’s was founded in 1983 by Bill Owens, a freelance news photographer who earned national fame with his book “Suburbia,” a send-up of newly-developed housing tracts in Livermore which has sold 50,000 copies since its publication in 1973. He also documented his coverage of the infamous and deadly Rolling Stones concert in “Altamont 1969,” published in 2019.

Owens opened Buffalo Bill’s at 1082 B Street, downtown, after being laid off from the Livermore Independent newspaper. He raised $92,000 through a limited partnership of 32 investors.

“I was a home brewer all of my life,’’ said Owens, 84, and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Triskelion Brewing Company to close its doors for good
Triskelion Brewing Company in Hendersonville will close its door for good later this month, BlueRidgeNow.com reported on June 2.

The owners shared their reasoning for the closure in a vulnerable social media post on May 31. Owner Jonathan Ayers opened up about his struggle with alcoholism, and the new journey for he and his wife, Triskelion co-owner Becky Ayers.

The Ayers first opened Triskelion Brewing Company in December 2017 and have become a staple in Hendersonville’s Seventh Avenue District. The brewery will be the center of a farewell bash starting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, the last day for the business. The event is being hosted by The Lunch Bus.

The Ayers’ post on their Facebook page was greeted with over 150 supportive comments, and hundreds of interactions.

Jonathan Ayers shared the following message about what has led to this moment:

“We would love to lie and say it was with a heavy heart… but the truth is… our hearts are not heavy with this decision, because our lives are not the same as they once were.”

“See, when you own and run a business… you need to love it.

“You need to feel the ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: No- and low-alcohol beer sales almost double in five years
UK sales of low-alcohol and no-alcohol beers have almost doubled in five years as weaker versions of global brands such as Heineken and Budweiser helped convert drinkers from carbonated soft drinks, the Financial Times reported on June 6.

Drinkers in the UK bought $454 mln of alcohol-free and low-alcohol brews in 2021, up from $240 mln in 2016, according to research group IWSR, as they tapped into lower drinking rates among younger generations and fresh marketing drives by global brewers.

This included $184 mln of “alcohol-free” beers, which have 0.5 per cent ABV (alcohol by volume) or less, a figure more than triple the $52 mln of these products sold five years earlier, even though the overall beer market shrank.

Trevor Stirling, analyst at Bernstein, said the country had become “one of the hotspots” for growth in low-alcohol and no-alcohol brewing.

“It’s an adult soft drink rather than a substitute for alcohol . . . the acceptance of the products is probably higher than I was expecting,” Stirling said.

UK innovations such as Brewdog’s Nanny State, launched in 2011, and Adnams’ Ghost Ship, launched in 2012, helped the UK market gain a head start, he said.

Fernando Tennenbaum, chief financial officer of Anheuser-Busch InBev, said the world’s largest brewer was ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation records volume growth for the year ended March 31
Listed beverages manufacturer, Delta Corporation Limited has recorded volume growth across segments on the back of significant expenditure increases by the consuming public, the New Zimbabwe reported on June 3.

Presenting the group’s performance for the year ended March 31 2022, Delta chairman, Sternford Moyo, said during the period, lager beer volumes for the year grew by 38% compared to prior year, attributed to consistent product supply with respect to both brand and pack.

“There was a significant injection of new returnable glass bottles, which enabled the better utilisation of existing production capacity and the increase in the glass float allowed traders to remove the restriction to exchange bottles at point of purchase,” Moyo said.

During the period, a new brand, Sable Lager, was launched in March 2022, to expand our mainstream offerings and offer consumers a choice of an easy drinking lager.

The sorghum beer volume in Zimbabwe grew by 43% for the year on improved product supply.

“The volume at NatBrew Plc (Zambia) declined by 16% for the full year due to limited access to the market under COVID-19 restrictions and resurgence of competition from the illegal bulk beer offerings. The nascent volume recovery was dealt a blow following the hike in excise ...More info on site

Barley news France: Condition of wheat, barley crops declines for fifth consecutive week
The condition of France's soft wheat crop has declined for a fifth consecutive week, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on June 3, as dryness persisted in the European Union's biggest grain producer, Reuters reported.

An estimated 67% of the soft wheat crop was in good or excellent condition in the week to May 30, down from 69% the previous week, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal report.

The rating fell by more than 20 percentage points in May as a hot spell exacerbated drought after low rainfall since the start of the year.

However, the decline in conditions last week was smaller than in the three preceding weeks, suggesting showers and cooler temperatures gave some respite to crops.

The latest soft wheat rating compared with a year-earlier score of 80%, FranceAgriMer said.

Harvest prospects in France are being watched closely amid disruption to Ukrainian supplies following Russia's invasion.

Traders and analysts say drought has damaged French crops in areas with shallow soil but that conditions are much more promising in areas with deep soil that have had some rainfall.

Regional data in FranceAgriMer's cereal report confirmed local contrasts. In the Centre-Val de Loire region south of Paris, just 43% of the soft wheat crop was rated good/excellent, ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Diageo stepping up premiumisation of India portfolio
Spirits major Diageo India, which controls United Spirits Ltd, is stepping up premiumisation in the company's portfolio and expects a high double-digit growth from scotches, said its managing director & CEO Hina Nagarajan.

Besides, Diageo India is also working on sustainability initiatives through brands and expects to be plastic waste positive. It is taking solar initiatives, working on afforestation and also aims to be a water positive company, she added.

The company is working on a premiumisation strategy and reshaping its portfolio with renovations and innovations of brands such as Signature and Royal Challenge and scaling it up after getting the momentum, the Business Today reported on June 5.

The move is aimed at strengthening Diageo's participation in prestige and accelerating growth rates which are visible in the results, she said.

"We have a very good presence in scotches. And with the activations, which we have done around Johny Walker, the renovation of Black Dog scotch and launch of Talisker and Singleton, which are malt brands, we are seeing a very high double-digit growth in scotches and that is helping our premiumisation journey massively," Nagarajan told PTI.

Brewery news Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia remains coy on any price hikes
Heineken Malaysia Bhd has remained coy on any price hikes for its products, preferring to say it will continue monitoring input costs to ensure it remains competitive, The Edge Markets reported on June 4.

Responding to a query from theedgemarkets.com on whether the company intends to revise prices, the brewer said it cannot comment on its plans, which are commercially sensitive.

“Should there be any price announcements, our distributors and customers will be the first to be informed.

“Nevertheless, in light of the current challenging environment and global supply chain uncertainties, we continue monitoring our input costs to ensure we remain competitive,” it said in a statement.

It was reported on Thursday (June 2), that Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd said it will increase the prices of some of its products from July 1 due to rising input costs.

In a document sighted by The Edge, Carlsberg said that despite its cost-mitigation efforts, the group had to “adjust” the prices of the products because of the increasing input costs worsened by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Brewery news Russia: Foreign alcohol reserves dwindling in Russia
"Sorry, that was the last bottle of Czech beer we had," said a waiter at a central Moscow restaurant, a month after Russia sent troops into Ukraine and the West imposed sweeping sanctions.

More than 100 days into what Russia calls a special military operation in Ukraine, foreign alcohol is still available in Moscow pubs, but the once ample reserves are dwindling, Reuters reported on June 6.

"Some pubs accumulated large stocks when it all started. But, as far as I know, there have been no new deliveries ordered and confirmed after Feb. 24," said Alexander Skripkin, who manages two bars in Moscow.

Many foreign companies including leading Western brewer in the country Carlsberg, Anheuser-Busch InBev and Heineken, have suspended sales in Russia and shipping trade has plummeted.

That has pressured the economy and affected the habits of Russians used to a lavish selection of foreign-made alcohol.

"The beer situation is very cheerless," said Anton, a 36-year-old IT expert who works for a state financial organisation in Moscow.

"Not to mention Paulaner, Pilsner Urquell and other tasty stuff, I'm not at all confident if Russian beer is here to stay. There are problems not only with beer imports but even with imports of hops," he added.

Brewery news Kenya: Government seeks to increase excise duty on beer, wine and spirits
Almost every year, there are dozens of Kenyans who are reported to either have died or hospitalized after consuming illicit brews, The Star reported on June 4.

There have also been cases of people going blind after partaking in these lethal drinks made in Kenya’s underground world of self-proclaimed “Master distillers”.

Some of the common names you will hear include kumi kumi or changa'a, kangara, busaa, sorghum baridi, el nino, one touch and jet fuel, among others.

It is estimated that at least 14,000 young and old people die each year from consuming illegally brewed alcohol, mostly made with high methanol levels, with additives such as fertilizer, battery acid and other toxics.

Not only the locally made brews make the list of illicit alcohol but some craftsmen have even put the drinks in local pubs, with funny brands that don’t meet the set standards being sold in measurements of as low as Sh10.

“There are a lot of fake killer drinks that are not necessarily local brews. There are drinks that make you high with a single sip you wonder what the formula is,” poses Roy Nyagah, a city entrepreneur who operates a bar in one of Nairobi’s busy estates.

In 2015, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: 2021-22 grain exports reach 47.2 mln tonnes to-date
Ukraine has exported 148,000 tonnes of grain in the first five days of June, pushing its July to June 2021-22 marketing year total to 47.2 million tonnes, the country’s agriculture ministry said on June 6, Reuters reported.

The ministry said the total volume included 18.578 million tonnes of wheat, 22.4 million tonnes of corn and 5.7 million tonnes of barley, with corn shipments dominating the June start, Reuters reported.

Ukraine exported up to 6 million tonnes of grain a month before Russia invaded the country on Feb. 24, but in recent months the volumes have fallen to about 1 million tonnes, sparking global grain shortage concerns and price spikes. Brewery news Australia: Lion launches Australia’s first carbon-neutral certified, alcohol-free beer
Lion has brewed Australia’s first carbon-neutral certified, alcohol-free beer as part of its sustainability drive, The Drinks Business reported on June 7.

The zero-carbon alcohol-free vegan beer, named XXXX Zero, will be targeted at climate-conscious consumers and has been launched in Queensland, Australia.

As a company, Lion first gained its carbon neutral certification back in 2020, but has since revealed plans to be completely powered by renewable electricity by 2025 and aims to have a net-zero value chain by 2050.
